The board recognized Kelly Oberheu, math teacher at Emporia High School who is among the 32 Kansas Horizon Award winners announced in early January. The Kansas Horizon Awards recognize exemplary beginning teachers who perform their first year in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.

The board recognized Katana Dobson, Payton Harmon, Emma Persinger and Nickolas Velo, Emporia High School debaters for being named National Forensic League (NFL) All-Americans for speech and debate excellence and academic success. To be recognized students were required to have a 3.7 GPA or higher, an ACT score of 27+ or an SAT score of 2000+. The students hold an NFL degree of Superior Distinction and have also demonstrated outstanding character and leadership. The board also recognized their coach Scott Bonnet for his outstanding leadership and success of the debate program.
Thank you to Tom and Ida Haag for donating $3,000 to the Emporia High boys and girls golf teams. The donation will be used for weather-related golf apparel.
Hopkins Foundation Tuition Assistance Program
Following discussion, the Board agreed to table this item until the March board meeting in order to gather additional information about the process for providing tuition assistance to EHS students enrolled in post secondary courses at Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College.
Summer Drivers Education
The Board approved the Greenbush online Drivers Education curriculum as the local curriculum so the school district can offer a summer 2018 driver's education program. There will be an enrollment fee of $200 per student and Greenbush will provide an online instructor and in-car instructor(s).
The board approved to solicit bids for replacement of the roof at Village Elementary School. The Village roof was selected because of the condition of the roof.
The Board approved to solicit bids for replacing 4,500 Chromebooks. The current Chromebook lease expires at the end of the school year.
The Board approved to solicit bids for one route bus and one special education bus. Emporia Public Schools applied for the the School Bus Rebate Program. The buses would need to comply with the rebate specifications to receive $20,000 for each bus.
Board Policy Updates:
The Board approved board policy updates to align with revised state statues.
SO66 Audit Results:
Rob Scheib, Assistant Superintendent of Business, shared the final results of the KSDE superintendent's organization report audit
Facility Needs Assessment:
The Board appointed a committee to begin the process of interviewing and recommending an architect and CM At-risk company to conduct a needs assessment for district facilities.
