Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

End of Year Message From Mr. Stack
Thank You For a Great Year!

Dear Sanborn Community,

We have reached the end of another great school year. Thank you to our teachers, our students, our parents, and our community for making it a great one! This will be our last newsletter of the 2016-2017 school year. There are a couple things to keep in mind as we start the summer vacation months:

1. The Main Office/Guidance Office will be open Monday - Friday from 8AM - 3PM during the summer. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions.

2. The Guidance Office will mail schedules for the 2017-2018 school year in mid-August. For students who wish to make a change in their schedule, there will also be a process to request changes at that time.

3. Look for our summer mailing at the beginning of August. It will have important information for the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

On behalf of our school, I wish each and every one of you a happy summer vacation!

Sincerely,

-Mr. Brian M. Stack, Principal
Staff Spotlight : Mr. Dan Smith
We Wish Mr. Smith a Happy Retirement

For many years at our school, Mr. Dan Smith has been a fixture in room 226. He is one of our school's science teachers, and he specializes in Biology and Microbiology.

Mr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Rhode Island in Agriculture Science - Resource Development. He has enjoyed a long career in education, culminating in his time at Sanborn Regional High School.

Students will always remember Mr. Smith's passion and excitement for science, from lab experiments and lectures to fun field trips and projects. Mr. Smith has been the keep of our school's small greenhouse program. Over the years, he has helped a number of students grow various plants, flowers, and vegetables in the space.

At the end of this school year, Mr. Smith will retire from Sanborn to spend more time with his family and friends, doing things he has always wanted to do but hasn't had the time. We know he will miss seeing his students and colleagues each day, but he will always be in our hearts and memories.

Mr. Smith, we wish you well in your retirement. Thank you for always being a true example of Sanborn PRIDE!
Extended FLT Sessions for Grades 9-11 on June 19 and 20
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear Parents/Guardians of Sanborn Regional High School Grade 9-11 Students,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last two days of school, June 19-20. On these days, we will run 90-minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, teachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students will also be able to begin the work on credit recovery courses if needed.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency or who have not finished any required work in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.
Students who are passing all of their competencies and who have completed all required work for their classes will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10PM.

Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Friday, June 16 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

All students are required to turn in their school-issued technology device for the summer to the library (For most students, this is their Chromebook). Students will be re-issued this same device in the fall. Device collection will be conducted in advisory in the school days leading up to June 16. Students who do not turn in their device before the last day of school will be held responsible for the lost / missing item.

Please contact the office at (603) 642-3341 if you have any questions about this plan.

SRHS Starts Academic Hall of Fame
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

I have always wanted to find a way for our school to celebrate students who achieve some of our highest academic awards in each department each year. Having watched how successful the Track and Field Record Board has been in promoting the track program and inspiring students to take risks and push their limits in track, I thought it would be great if we could do the same thing for academics. My vision, the "Sanborn Regional High School Academic Hall of Fame" came to realization today when we mounted our new hall of fame boards in a prominent location on the first floor of our school. The boards will each be able to hold 4-5 years worth of academic award data -- the students who receive the department awards each year for each grade. Like the track board, the academic boards were designed so that names can slide in and out as we cycle through awards over the years. I hope that these boards help us continue our efforts as a school community to honor our best and brightest students for their academic accomplishments.

Rare Apprenticeship Opportunity for Recent Sanborn Graduates
A Message From Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) is one of the largest employers in the Seacoast area. The primary mission of the shipyard is the repair and modernization of nuclear submarines. Careers at the shipyard are highly coveted and some of the benefits include health insurance, tuition reimbursement and retirement. It has just been announced that PNS will tentatively open its application process for apprenticeships on June 29 th with testing scheduled for some time in August.  PNS anticipates hiring 100 apprentices due to an increasing work load forecast. The following application information is taken from their website http://www.navsea.navy.mil/Home/Shipyards/Portsmouth/Worker-Skills/

" Visit  http://www.usajobs.gov/   frequently to view openings in the Trades Apprenticeship Program as positions in this program are opened at random intervals. Enter "Trades Apprentice" in the keywords block and click "Search Jobs." Select the "Trades Apprentice" hyperlink (make sure the location listed is US-ME-Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Kittery). Select "Apply Online". Follow the instructions for logging into your account (if you already have one) or for creating a new account."
In addition, Pinkerton Academy is offering a 'how to enroll' in the PNS Trades Apprenticeship workshop in July in Derry. Students do not need to be a Pinkerton graduate nor do they need to live in the Pinkerton district. For information on the course, please contact Douglas Cullen, Manager of Career Services at Pinkerton Academy at [email protected] .

Good luck to all our graduates and especially to anyone who chooses to apply for this exciting opportunity.

Senior Spotlight : Jason Moreau
An Article by English Teacher Aaron Cass

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Jason has an amazing voice. I've never heard him sing, and he's the last one to raise his hand in class, but when he sits down and puts pen to paper he comes alive. He shows a special kind of care, and pace, and introspection in his writing that impresses me with each new piece he writes.

I first had Jason for Creative Writing when he was a sophomore. Even at age 15 he struck me as one of the more thoughtful young people I've come across. His love of music, passion for podcasts and desire to craft exquisite writing give him a certain depth and character. I know high school hasn't always been the easiest place for him, but with his writing skills, kind heart and keen eye for observation I'm sure he's headed for something great.
Senior Spotlight : Nathaniel Menard
An Article By Social Studies John Welch

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

If you happen to pass by this senior in the hallway you will be greeted with a friendly "hello". Outgoing and compassionate are just a few words to describe Nathaniel Menard.  I had the privilege of having Nathaniel in my class his Sophomore year.  He was a hard working and self-motivated individual, who was a delight to teach.

Ms. Petraitis describes Nathaniel as an individual who accepts challenges when presented with them, and was always excited and enthusiastic about improving his writing skills.  Mr. White describes Nathaniel as a "natural leader in the classroom" who "constantly carries a positive attitude".

Nathaniel has been a successful student both in the classroom and on the athletic field. He loves basketball and was a member of the basketball team for all four years of high school.  In his spare time, Nathaniel enjoys playing sports with his friends.

In the fall, Nathaniel is planning on attending college and would like to major in Sports Management.
Senior Spotlight : Noah Fioravante
An Article By Wellness Teacher Jennifer Belcher

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

I have had the honor of working with Noah since his freshman year.   A short list of adjectives describing him would include: ambitious, dedicated, hard working, leader, kind, passionate, and caring.

As a leader on the football field his coaches would use adjectives such as: dedicated, hardworking, and inspirational.
His coach, Josh White says, "It's interesting when talking about Noah as most leaders either are vocal leaders or lead by example, Noah does both.  His peers look up to him and the younger athletes strive to be more like him.  He is a model student-athlete."

He has achieved many honors this year including a "Joe Yukica Award" which is a Scholar Athlete award for football

Over the past few years I have gotten to know a different side of Noah through our Morning Fitness Program.  Not many high school students get up early to come to school, much less hit the weight room for an extra workout before starting their day.  Noah, however, is here everyday, sitting in his car waiting for me to open up the doors at 5:45am!

In the fitness center this year I have watch Noah: the teacher, champion and motivator, push everyone to be their absolute best.  Not only is he always ready with encouraging comments and tips for better form and improving performance, he does it in such a non-threatening positive way that other students can't help but listen, learn and be encouraged.
It is often easy to forget you are talking to a teenager with Noah as his perspectives, inflection and attitudes reflect a more worldly view.

Noah's English teacher, Lauren Petraitis, echos this sentiment saying, "Noah is a young man who is wise beyond his years! He is cognizant of what is happening in the world and his perspectives show a genuine concern for humanity."

Noah will be attending UNH in the Fall majority in engineering.  I am confident he will continue to make us proud for years to come.

Best wishes Noah!
Senior Spotlight : Rumit Patel
An Article By Spanish Teacher Tony Kinsley

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Born in India and raised in New Jersey, Rumit Patel joined our school his junior year and since then he has become a respected member of the Sanborn community. Rumit is a responsible, intelligent, and dedicated student who has developed an interest for science through his high school years. In August Rumit will start a new adventure at Southern New Hampshire University where he will begin his career in Aerospace Engineering. He plans to transfer to Penn State University in the future and then achieve his midterm goal: an internship with NASA.

During his two years at Sanborn, Rumit has participated in many extracurricular activities such as the Aerospace Club and the Drama Club, and every time he has demonstrated how dedicated and reliable he is. Evan Czyzowsky, director of the Drama Club, said this about him: "Rumit joined the Drama Troupe this year in an unusual way: the day before opening night of our fall show we had a last-minute need for an actor and Rumit volunteered to step into the role. He had to very quickly learn lines and blocking and then perform in front of a large audience. The fact that he was ready, able, and willing to step up to this challenge speaks volumes about his commitment to his learning and his school community. Without a doubt, Rumit is someone you can count on."
Rumit is also a great athlete who has become a valued member of our Football Varsity Team. His coach John Welch stated that: "I have had the pleasure of knowing Rumit for the past two years as his football coach. Rumit joined the Sanborn Football Team his junior year after moving here from New Jersey. Rumit is a dedicated student athlete who was an integral part of the Sanborn Football Program.  More importantly this past fall he enrolled in a college level math course at Northern Essex Community College, demonstrating his dedication to a future career in engineering.  He has an excellent work ethic.  He has been accepted to multiple colleges and wants to pursue a career in Aerospace Engineering.  It has been a pleasure watching Rumit grown as a student athlete these past two years."

Besides his good work at school, Rumit has many other interests. He loves traveling and is a hip-hop enthusiast. He also enjoys reading mystery novels, and through the last three years he has been working on his own novel, still in process of documentation. If all that wasn't enough, he also plays tabla, a traditional Indian percussion instrument.

Without a doubt, his dedication and tenacity will bring Rumit to wonderful places in the future; he will achieve anything he wants in life. Good luck Rumit! We will miss you!
Senior Spotlight : Samantha Lynch
An Article By Business Technology Teacher Kerrie Alley

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Samantha Lynch is a kind, caring and hardworking student.  Sammi is a positive member of our school community through her efforts on class council and leading her peers by example. Sammi is a hard working student; she is very conscious of her grades and strives to do her very best on each assignment maintaining an above average GPA. On top of her school commitments, Sammi is a competitive dancer for L.A. Dance. She has been dancing since she was 3.  Sammi's future plans are to study psychology at the University of New Hampshire.

Senior Co-Advisor, Jack Kelly has this to say about Sammi: "I have worked with Sammi Lynch for 3 years, as a class council member and our Treasurer for the last 2 years.  Sammi is responsible, hardworking dependable and trustworthy.  She is a leader in our class, friendly and  always has a positive attitude.  On top of all that, she is a really likeable kid.

Sammi will do well in business going forward.  I have sort of a backwards dynamic with her, where she is often calling me to task for being too lenient with dues or prom tickets.  Her ability to keep her eyes on the prize will serve her well in the future.

Sammi has made the Class of 2017 better by her efforts.  She has made the Head Advisor's job easier by her conscientious attention to detail.  We will miss her next year, as she brings her talents to UNH".
Senior Spotlight : Sarah Bibeau
An Article By Teacher and Track Coach Scott Maxwell

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Sarah Bibeau is one of those kids that as a teacher and coach makes you love coming to work every day.  I've had the privilege of working with Sarah for the past four years as her cross country and track and field coach.  In talking with her teachers and other coaches, there was one thing we all agreed on: she's one of the most genuine, polite and well-rounded kids we've ever worked with.

As an athlete and student she is driven and dedicated.  Her dedication to each of her sports (cross country, track, basketball, and softball) is excellent, and according to her teachers, she's just as committed and determined in the classroom.  She's taken a few spills over the years (mainly just on the cross country course), but she always gets back up and pushes on.  She doesn't let things bother her for too long.  She's the type of athlete and student that once she puts her mind to something there's no stopping her!

Science teacher Mr. Dan Smith says that it's been a pleasure having Sarah in class, especially in his Advanced Biology class.  He says she's a pro when it comes to growing and transforming bacteria. "Her work is always done accurately and of the highest quality.  She is friendly, responsible, and a caring young woman.  She likes to laugh, have fun, and gets along with students and teachers alike."

Sarah is always willing to help students in need, and has shown this through her work with the National Honor Society and the Life of a Student program, helping students feel comfortable in their transition from middle school and throughout high school.  During her time here at the high school, she's been a leader on the athletic field. Although she would never admit it, she's been a major driving force behind her teams successes, and has made many of us at the school better teachers and coaches as a result.

I'm so proud of everything she's accomplished on the field and in the classroom, and I'm excited to see her continue to strive for greatness as she pursues a career in science at Clark University this fall.

Congratulations Sarah

Senior Spotlight : Tori Gugliemino
An Article By English Teacher Aaron Cass

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Tori Gugliemino impresses the heck out of me. Sophomore year she was a nice, quiet young woman who seemed content to get by. Now, two years later, she has upped the ante. She's taking Advanced Placement classes, striving to improve with each assignment and putting herself in challenging situations in which she is committed to giving everything she's got with grit and determination.

She's headed off to Salve Regina University next year, where I'm sure she'll have a great time and continue to broaden her horizons. It has been a pleasure having her in class, watching her grow, and now, seeing her go off into the world to do great things. Best of luck, Tori!

Senior Spotlight : Sophia Rak
An Article By Teacher Connie Carson

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Sophia Rak has a gentle manner and a strong work ethic, and can be counted on to put her all in whatever she commits to. Her striking poise and confident walk come from her experience on the modeling runway, where she has excelled after completing programming in this area in Boston two year ago.  She has spent much of her time honing this skill, recognizing that now is the time to capitalize on her ability to strike a pose.  But don't let that gentle exterior fool you.  Sophia Rak is a quiet yet fierce competitor. She has been a member of the Girls Reserve Basketball team for the past two seasons, and according to her coach, Ms. Allie, she has been a force to be recokoned with.  "She has been a joy to coach. Sophia is a hard worker; she would strive each practice to get work on her weaknesses and improve.  Sophia became a leader to her teammates by encouraging them and helping them improve their skills.

Sophia is a strong inside player, but is not afraid to take the outside shot when needed.  She lead our team in scoring and rebounds."  Sophia was also recognized recently in the Partners breakfast by her peers and the owner of her internship site.  Sophia was able to explore her interest in children and child development through her work of Little Wonders Day Care.  Though she discovered that this isn't really an area she wishes to pursue at this time, her internship coach had high praise for her work, her willingness to learn, and the ability for her to take direction and be flexible, and her overall commitment to the children she worked with.  Though she is still unsure what the long term future holds in store for her, Sophia is leaving Sanborn with a drive to push herself, and a willingness to make and keep a commitment to the very end. Congratulations Sophia Rak!

Senior Spotlight : Abby Wellinger
An Article By Teacher Connie Carson

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Abby Wellinger
is a fierce and loyal friend to those who know her.  She will defend her friends and family with emphasis, and will not hesitate to speak her mind if she feels someone has been wronged.  Abby will surprise you at every turn.  She has a keen sense of humor, a deep intellect for those things she loves, and she is a classic car fanatic.  She hopes that working in and around the classic car industry becomes her career.  Abby loves animals, can quote from Dr. Who, and she enjoys drawing in her free time.  You will often see her with her headphones on listening to her favorite music.  Her tastes are eclectic.  She may be a twin, but she has her own interests and pursuits, and she plans on following her own dreams.  Though Abby is unsure of just what her future plan will entail, she is excited to be moving on with her life, getting a job, and graduating from Sanborn Regional High School.
Senior Spotlight : Abby Tavares
An Article By Teacher Connie Carson

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Abby Tavares

Though quiet and reserved, Abby Tavares walks with confidence in the halls of Sanborn Regional High School.  Her curiosity and quiet assertiveness has gained her the ability converse comfortably with her friends and teachers.  She has been an instrumental part of the athletic department through her internship this year, as well as a key contributor to work in the guidance office.  Her outstanding attendance, pride in her Portuguese culture, and closeness to her family makes her stand out among her peers.  She is a proud and conscientious student, and she's not afraid to try something new.  She's always had an interest in sports, but actually being an active participant was something that she wasn't sure about.  As a senior, she took the risk, tried out for the basketball team, and made it onto the reserve team.  Her go-get-her style is exactly what she needed at this juncture.  She went on to play the full season, and was honored for her efforts at the sports banquet.  In her senior year Abby achieved one of her dreams; becoming a member of the Sanborn Basketball Team.

Both Mrs. Drake and Mrs. Larson have worked with Abby over the last few years.  Those who have worked with Abby know this about her: She is "a hard working young woman who has had great success in shop and automotive class.  Abby is always seeking the next project, and typically will create something not for herself, but for family and friends, according to teachers. Abby has always been helpful. She gladly takes on that responsibility not only with fellow students but also in her internship.  She helps out in the office, she has been helping Vicki for years doing various jobs, she has worked side by side with the custodial staff.  She was recently honored at the Partner's Breakfast for the time she has put into her internships at Sanborn.  Abby is versatile and accomplished, and will carry the skills she has learned from her internship into the world of work after Sanborn.

Southern Rockingham Coalition for Healthy Youth
A Message From Director Charlotte Scott

THE EARLIER A PERSON START SMOKING, DRINKING OR USING OTHER DRUGS, THE GREATER THE LIKELIHOOD OF DEVELOPING ADDICTION

When a young person uses alcohol, marijuana or other drugs as a coping method for anxiety, depression or stress, it replaces the actual processing of feelings and the emotional coping process is stunted. The brains ability to manage stress is now lowered because it has not experienced the natural passing of the feeling, and the young person hasn't found and used a healthy behavior to aid in coping with the pressure and stress. This could lead to a difficulty in processing and managing emotions into and throughout adulthood. Skipping these crucial steps to healthy development, and replacing them with artificial rewards, primes the young brain for addiction.

Delaying age of first use of any substance GREATLY REDUCES the likelihood of becoming addicted.
  • 9 out of 10 people who misuse or are addicted to nicotine, alcohol marijuana or other drugs began using these substances before they were 18.
  • People who began using addictive substances before age 15 are nearly 7 times likelier to develop a substance use disorder than those who delay first use until age 21 or older
  • Every year that substance use is delayed during the period of teen brain development, the risk of addiction and substance misuse decreases
