The Small Hours
By Susan Garsoe

William Willimon writes, "The first week of Lent begins with old John the Baptist. His sermons could not be entitled, 'Be Good to Yourself.'
This prophetic 'voice crying in the wilderness' appears 'preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgivness of sins' (Mark 1:4). He is not the Christ. John is the one who gets us ready. How does one prepare for this new age? Repent, change your ways, and get washed."

On the last Sunday of Epiphany, we were given a calendar called "Random Acts of Lenten Kindness." On each day of Lent and Holy Week, there is a suggestion for expressing compassion for others. None of them says, "pass legislation to make people be nice," or "rewrite the Sunday School curriculum." They are small things, within our grasp, that will change us. Nonetheless, to do them, always, is radical. "Relay an overheard compliment." "Hold the elevator." "Pray for someone in need." "Listen intently." "Forgive someone and never bring up the issue again."

Repent.
Change your ways.
And get washed.

A Lenten Exploration of Race and Faith in America
Wednesdays, Feb 21 - March 21 6-8 pm - Meets at the Barrel Room at Ivywild School
1604 S Cascade Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80905

The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. once famously observed,
"it is appalling that the most segregated hour of Christian America
is eleven o'clock on Sunday morning."

Join David and Krista during Lent for a five-week exploration of the intersection of race and faith in America. We will read together James Cone's book, "The Cross and The Lynching Tree" which will guide our inquiry into the complex and challenging history of race in America and how it impacts our churches and our faith.

Chapel Youth and Deborah Lowery Participate in
Human Trafficking Legislative Day
Denver, February 15th

A Note on Legislative Day from 8th Grader Millie -
We got in the car at 6:30 and arrived at 8am. We then found parking and took the bus to the capitol, it was bitterly cold! When we got into the Capitol we immediately went up into the third floor and sat in on the senate and House of Representatives. It was very interesting to watch, especially when the people got catty towards one another! Ella and I both made letters to hand out, we actually got a lot of positive feedback! Representative Lois Landgraf actually sat down with us in her office and told us how much good we we're doing for Colorado Springs! It was all very cool. We then ate lunch and went to the trafficking meeting.  We then went upstair to a senate committee trying to pass bills. But the one that we went for was about
human trafficking for minors. The bill got bounced around for about an hour and a half in which there was much testimony and debate on amendments. But finally the bill got passed into appropriations! Yay! By then it was 4:30 we were spent! But Senator Gardner said we could shadow him for half a day! We would be very important! And we had to go by then so we said goodbye to people we handed out letters to and left. But all in all it was a super fun!

There are many ways to serve in our weekly liturgies here at Chapel of Our Saviour.

Morning With Our Master
Saturday, February 17, 2018 9 am-Noon
"Lent comes providentially to reawaken us, to shake us from our lethargy." --Pope Francis
Lencten - Anglo-Saxon for "spring" and also the Anglo-Saxon name for the month of March - when most of our season of Lent happens. As early as 203 Christians were commenting on the observance of a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works. As we enter into this holy season, join us for a time of prayer as we consider not only Lent but The Stations of the Cross. Walk the Way of Sorrows with Christ as we collectively consider this greatest gift ever given - knowing the end of the story is Easter!  All are welcome - consider bringing a friend.  Light refreshments will be provided.  Please feel free to add your contribution if you are so moved.

Blessing Bags for the Lord's Dinner
The Blessing Bags filled with toiletries were a huge hit at the Lord's Dinner! Our guests deeply appreciated your thoughtfulness and generosity. Not only did they enjoy a fabulous meal prepared by Chapel's very own chefs, but they received much needed toiletries too. Leftover Blessing Bags were given to Westside CARES for distribution and Left over food was given to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry and the Springs Rescue Mission. Thanks to the 22 volunteers who helped make the dinner and Blessing Bags a success!

Kids' Care Kits
Please help to make Kid's Care Kits on February 25, 2018 at 9:40am in the Parish House.  Kids Care Kits are given to children accompanying their parents at Westside CARES.  Typically, the kids are stressed because their parents are stressed.  The kits help to ease that stress for a bit.  Kid's Care Kits are packed in a gallon Ziploc bag and consist of a juice drink, healthy snack, a few crayons and something to color. All the supplies will be provided and all ages are welcome to help to assemble the kits.

Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Hosting
From March 11-17 2018, we will provide a home to families enrolled in IHN. The homeless families agree to follow strict guidelines of IHN as they work aggressively to regain a solid foothold on their situation and circumstances. As hosts, we provide meals, companionship, and a warm place to stay. Volunteers are needed to be evening hosts, provide dinner, do laundry, make breakfast, provide lunch supplies, and tear down. Please contact  Betsy Vanderwerf to volunteer.

B Street Food Pantry
The B Street Food Pantry, a satellite operation of Westside CARES provides a four-day food supply up to six times per year to households demonstrating a genuine need.   Every Sunday, Chapel collects canned goods & staples for the pantry in the little Red Wagon. This month, we are collecting:

*Sundays -  Canned soups and chili    *Warm outer wear - gloves, hats, scarves, and coats   *Diapers (size 4 & 5)  *Empty Egg Cartons  *Translucent Pill Bottles   *Shopping Bags

The Thrift House
Volunteers are needed to work at the Thrift House of the Episcopal Church located at 1027 S. Tejon Street during the first two weeks of the month.  Chapel volunteers work with other Episcopal churches in the area to operate a retail store selling gently used items.  Profits are distributed to churches based upon volunteer hours worked.  The profits are then dispersed to numerous county, state, and global non-profit agencies.  To volunteer, please contact  [email protected] .  Also, donations and shoppers are greatly appreciated!

Lenten Random Acts of Kindness
Lent calls us to show greater compassion for others. Random acts of kindness are a way to express our compassion every day during Lent. A calendar that gives us an easy way to show kindness daily, is enclosed in the bulletin and available on the Chapel website at https://www.chapelofoursaviour.com/serving-in-our-community/ day. Please use it to help to deepen your relationship with God, while making our world a better place.
