On the Yellow school bus

Yesterday, the PK0 students went on the yellow school bus for the first time and enjoyed a short drive around the school. When a dream comes true!

Bonbon le clown came just for the PK0 students

Our PK0 were so happy to be able to play with "Bonbon Le Clown".
Bonbon started with giant bubbles, and continued with some magic tricks to the delight of the students!

MS Math/Science Club

The science club presented their three projects about Climate Change in the parent's pick up area between 8:15-8:30 on Wednesday June 14, 2017 before school. Our Student scientists have done an amazing job following the scientific process and were proud to teach us a lot about their findings.

Watch the first "Mannequin Challenge" ever done at SDFAS!
Une première pour SDFAS: Mannequin Challenge !

This was filmed on Wednesday afternoon with Upper Elementary and Middle School students, and it is also our way to wish all SDFAS community a great summer vacation!
Kermesse

Yesterday was the last day of another spectacular year at SDFAS. To kick off our summer, ponies and a petting zoo, bouncy house and slides, a game truck and carnival games were offered, at absolutely no cost, to our lucky families. Our community  could also pay a fraction of the regular price to enjoy high-quality carnival rides and sample food prepared by our very own families. La Kermesse was well attended and many past families and alumni came back to the school to savor yet another happy moment on our sin drenched grounds.
On behalf of all those who helped make this Kermesse yet another successful event, Happy summer! We hope these next two months are restful and filled with joyful memories.

Lydia Inostroza-Babureck, PA President & Kermesse Chair!

ÉDITO

The last Écho of the school year is an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful projects that took place during the past few days: the End-of-the-year Shows, the 8th grade trip to Canada, the Music presentation, Field Day, Graduation, La Fête de la Musique, in other words, the amazing participation of your children and how the challenges of our bilingual and multicultural program promotes such an array of talents!

You can also be very proud of your children's academic achievement. The ERB test performed the past few weeks allows us to compare in a very objective way the results with those of other public or private schools. The charts speak for themselves: our 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th grades (we skip voluntarily 6th grade to prevent too many consuming testing times) show that SDFAS students outperform in most academic areas, the average student who follows a full -American curriculum. This is not a surprise and it confirms many studies on the power of a bilingual education.

It is also that time of the year to bid farewell to the families leaving the community for diverse horizons and to wish them all the best! They will be missed. We will also see some of our teachers and assistants leave us this year, and we thank them for their time and dedication to their students. (see
article and list in below)

During the break, keep posted for more information on the back-to-school season and enjoy a warm, convivial summer which will allow you to spend quality time with your children!

This is my last Édito and I wish the Écho a long life keeping our community informed on the rich and varied events SDFAS has to offer!

Christian Jarlov, Head of school

Chers parents,

The 8 th Graders' trip to Canada
Voyage au Canada des élèves de 4ème

From June 4 to 9, our 8th grade students had the great opportunity to travel to Canada, with chaperones Ms. Denis, Ms. Seidel and Ms. Brouder. They discovered the history of the Quebec province while visiting the cities of Montreal and Quebec, realizing the importance of the French language and the influence of the European culture in that part of North America. They participated in the local life, tasted the traditional "poutine," and went to see a film in French at a movie theatre all while trolling the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal and Old Quebec City. They got to enjoy a range of various activities, from real fun to culture exploration, such as trampoline and bowling on one side, role-playing the "Conseil Souverain de la Nouvelle France" and geo catching on the other. Finally, they created a TV program at the Radio Canada studios. Everyone just loved the entire trip! Thank you to Ms. Denis who has been organizing this trip for several years now, and knows the ropes of the local culture!

Elementary's Show
Spectacle des Élémentaires

On Friday, June 9th all elementary students presented their last show of the year. Play, movie, opera, circus... the performance was exceptional!
This presentation has been filmed and is now available on SDFAS Vimeo account.

When a Circus comes to SDFAS!

Thanks to the imagination of the teachers, the creativity of the assistants, and the never ending energy of the students, all Maternelle parents entered the wonderful world of the Circus with its magicians, clowns, acrobats, tightrope walkers and musicians .

The video of the show will be soon added to our Vimeo account.

Mrs Eger, Holocaust Survivor meets our students
Mme Eger, survivante de l'Holocauste rencontre nos élèves

Pictured: Paul Otterson asking a question to Mrs Eger

5th, 6th and 7th grade students had a very special Forum yesterday with the talk given by Mrs. Eger, a resident of La Jolla who has endured extreme hardship during World War II, and delivered a message of peace and hope to the new generation.
From SD Union Tribune:
"In spring 1944, during World War II, Eger and her family were forced to leave their home in Hungary and go to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. Her parents were sent to die in the gas chambers of Auschwitz with more than a million other Jews. Eger, 16, was left in the prison camp and fellow inmates volunteered her to dance for Josef Megele, who had sent her parents to the gas chamber. She received a piece of bread and was spared death, at least temporarily. American soldiers liberated her in 1945."
Many students had the possibility to connect with her and ask questions. It was a very moving moment and students got to understand better this part of history with the testimonial of an exceptional lady.

Project Stars Wars: 7th grade French Math

Project Star Wars: In the course of the French Math Class, the 7th of students had to invent and build spaceships from sketches. These ships were to be photographed in a position in space. After drawing each part of the vessel as well as the patterns in a set of specifications, equipped with paper, scissors and glue, they achieved their constructions. Here are their products in action in space.

All the Elementary and Middle School Students enjoyed an afternoon of games, team building and competition for the fun of it, under the sun. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to help, to the teachers who led and cheered their team and to Diesa for a graet coordination of the afternoon.
Our 3rd grade sailing field trip to Mission Bay Aquatics center was a great success! Upon our arrival, students had a lesson about basic wind reading, parts of a Sabot sail boat, and how to maneuver using the sail and tiller. After our lesson, many students plunged into the bay for a swim test, and Francois and Nicholas impressed everyone with their swimming abilities. Students then had the opportunity to experience three types of boats: a small Sabot (sailed with a partner) a larger Hobie Cat (sailed with a small group of students and an instructor), and a larger keel boat sailed with an instructor. All the teachers were impressed by the students' independence and willingness to try something new. Great work, third graders! After a long morning of being on the water, we were greeted by a fabulous potluck and lots of different games on the beach organized by our fantastic parents. Thanks again!
The International Language School at SDFAS is designed to give students of all ages and various levels the opportunity to become acquainted with another language and its culture. We offer a specific language to choose from for native and non-native speakers, such as French, Chinese, Italian and Spanish.
For the French language two groups are offered: one for native French speakers and one for non-French speakers. The class for native speakers will focus on improving oral and written skills. For those learning French as a foreign language, oral and conversational skills will be emphasized.
The instructor/student ratio is very small: 1:8.
Learning another language opens doors to more opportunities and gives young students the advantage of learning and/or improving another language before high school.
