Facilities and Disease Control
By Markel
Question:  I own and run a boarding business from my barn. What trusted-source, best practices should I consider for disease control?

Answer: One of the major concerns of equine facilities is disease control. An outbreak can wreak havoc on your horse population and your reputation. It is wise to do a risk assessment and have a protocol in place at your facility. You can be found legally liable for failing to provide reasonable care to horses in your custody. These are the four concerns to keep in mind when developing a plan for disease control and prevention in your barn.

Just Announced: Emerging Jumper Rider Program; Applications Reopen for Zone Jumper Team Championships
On May 26, the USHJA announced a new program to identify the next generation of international Show Jumping talent in the United States. The USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program will allow the United States to identify and provide education and guidance to riders competing at the 1.10m-1.35m levels, as well as to their trainers and parents.

The Emerging Jumper Rider Program uses the new USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships, which are offered at 1.10/1.15m, 1.20/1.25m and 1.30/1.35m, to identify Jumper riders who have the skill and desire to excel in the sport, while educating these riders to become well-rounded horsemen on their path to excellence.

Applications Reopen for USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships
To allow for maximum participation in the first year of this exciting opportunity, the USHJA has reopened the application period and extended the 20 point minimum requirement for the USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships for our zone. USHJA will accept riders on until all spots are filled or 45 days prior to their zone's Championships, whichever occurs first. All riders who applied and met the criteria at the time of the original application closing deadline of May 1 will be invited to the Championships. Have your riders apply here!

Trainer Opportunities with the USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program:
  • Participation in the orientation sessions at the Zone Jumper Team Championships. These sessions will discuss the Jumping Athlete Pathway that identifies and nurtures Jumping athletes as they advance through the sport to enhance future success for Olympic and international teams representing the United States.

  • Trainers of individual medalists will be named Gold Star Jumper Coaches and will be invited to accompany their riders at the Gold Star Clinic. Each Gold Star Clinic will offer education for Gold Star Jumper Coaches to help them understand the competition landscape and the opportunities available to their riders as they advance through the sport.
