Hillsborough Honors Veterans At Annual Memorial Day Celebration

Hundreds of Hillsborough residents lined the streets last Saturday to honor Township Veterans along the annual Memorial Day parade route and Garden of Honor Ceremony.  The day's events began early with Hillsborough Township's Salute to Veterans Breakfast held at the Peter J. Biondi Building on the grounds of the Municipal Complex.

The Parade, led by Grand Marshal, Air Force Veteran  and long time Hillsborough resident   Ron Newsom,  began immediately after the breakfast.   Following the parade, Mr Newsom  shared what Memorial Day means to him in a moving speech at the Garden of Honor Ceremony.  

Dignitaries in attendance included Congressman Leonard Lance, Senator Kip Bateman, Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, Freeholders Mark Caliguire, Brian Levine and Peter Palmer, County Clerk Brett Radi, Mayor Carl Suraci, Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley, Committeeman Greg Burchette, Committeeman Frank DelCore and Committeeman Doug Tomsom.

Memorial Day festivities continued on Sunday in Neshanic with a parade. Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley and Committeeman Doug Tomson were in attendance and participated in the wreath laying ceremony.

VFW Post #8371 Memorial Day Veterans Drawing

On Tuesday, May 30th, the Hillsborough Memorial VFW post # 8371 conducted a brief memorial ceremony at the Garden of Honor.  They also sponsored a complimentary drawing for all Hillsborough Veterans.

Congratulations to the following Veterans whose names were drawn during the May 30, 2017 memorial service conducted by VFW Post # 8371 members at Hillsborough Township's Garden of Honor.

Hillsborough Memorial VFW Post # 8371 thanks all Veterans for their service, Post # 8371 members also express their appreciation to all merchants who donated gifts to honor our local military personnel who have served their country over the years.

Reach Interns Recognized at Township Committee Meeting

Hillsborough Township partnered with the School District's REACH program to offer internships to high school students at the Municipal Offices.  At a recent Township Committee meeting, the interns received certificates of achievement from Mayor Suraci and the Township Committee.

REACH Interns honored included:  Ryan Beggiato, John Dombrowski, Amanda Gillette, Kaitlin Hands, Gutam Kalluri, Timothy Lee, Jay Mendapara,
Cassandra Mure, Katherine Myers, Karnik Patel, Ann Philips, Chris Rothmann, Roman Tatevosov, Olivia Tobia and Matthew Wei.

HHS Girls Swim Team Are Central Jersey State Sectional Champions for Second Straight Year

The 2016-2017 Hillsborough High School Girls Swim Team was honored at the May 26th Township Committee Meeting for their successful season.  The team won their 2nd straight Central Jersey State Sectional Championship finishing the season with a record of 10 wins and only 2 losses.

Megan Bull (senior & co-captain) broke two school records this season: 200 freestyle & 100 breaststroke. Megan now currently holds a total of 4 school records: 200 Individual Medley, 200 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle, and the 100 Breaststroke. Megan was also crowned "Somerset County Champion" this season in the 200 Individual Medley & crowned "Skyland Conference Champion" in the 100 Breaststroke. Megan will swim for William & Mary College.

Additionally, seniors Megan Bull, Monica Stamler, Anushka Khanna, and Sompurna Choudhury were recognized for earning NISCA "Academic All-American Awards" for having a GPA of at least 3.75 or higher:

Learn about Living a Healthy and Green Lifestyle
Participating local businesses will have informative presentations, displays and demonstrations to raise awareness of the many facets of living a healthy lifestyle, including making sound nutritional choices, making long-term life planning decisions, choosing a green lifestyle as well as many health screenings.  There will also be a  Poster Contest   open to all school-aged Hillsborough residents to design a "Living Green" themed poster.

Primary Election is Tuesday, June 6th - Polls Open 6 am Bring Your Sample Ballot to the Polls

The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. Polls are open from  6 am to 8 pm , in accordance with New Jersey State Law. 

Please utilize the sample ballot that is mailed to you in advance of the Election to determine your polling location and voting district. This information is printed on the front cover of the sample ballot. Polling locations do have multiple voting districts, so it is important to know your voting district. To expedite your voting experience bring your sample ballot to the polls with you on Election Day.
Township to Host Business Summit
Facilitating Business Development & Expansion Remains a Top Priority

Hillsborough's Mayor Carl Suraci shared more details about the upcoming Business Summit that is set for Wednesday, June 7th at the Peter J. Bondi Building from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.

"Hosting a Business Summit gives our Business Community the opportunity to gather pertinent information from the Township Resources to assist them in their operations," stated Mayor Carl Suraci.

"We are always looking to further enhance the business community and believe that by providing this opportunity for the businesses to meet with the officials to discuss any concerns they may have will only continue to foster a positive experience for our local businesses," added Committeeman Greg Burchette, Liaison to the Hillsborough Business Association / Economic and Business Development Commission.

Eight (8) Nonprofits Receive Grant Funds through the Affinity Hillsborough Rewards Visa Credit Card Program
Over $7K Awarded in Spring 2017 to Non-Profit Organizations Serving Hillsborough's Seniors and Youths

Eight different non-profit organizations received grant awards through the Hillsborough Rewards Visa Credit Card Program at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting.  Representatives from the organizations were present to accept the ceremonial check presented by Mayor Carl Suraci and the members of the Credit Card Advisory Committee.
The total amount awarded Tuesday evening was $7,384.80. Since the inception of the program, nearly $70,000 in grants to community based youth, senior and local non-profit organizations have been awarded.   The Spring 2017 Grant recipients are:

  • Hillsborough Baseball League
  • GiGi's Playhouse
  • Hillsborough Rockettes and Rocket

Police Urge Residents to Keep Cars Locked

Residents are reminded to protect themselves from becoming a victim of personal property theft in their vehicles.  Keep your vehicles locked at all times and remove valuables.  If you must leave a purse or other valuables in your vehicle at least lock them in your trunk where they are out of sight, but it is better not to leave valuables in your car.
Are You Prepared? Hurricane Season is Here

Now is a good time to begin discussing hurricane risk and preparing for the tropical storm season that ends in late November. Be sure to have a plan, be informed, be prepared for a power outage, and know your evacuation plan.
  1. Have a plan : You may not be with your loved ones when disaster strikes, so have a Family Emergency Communication Plan in place so you know how to reach each other and where to meet up when conditions are safe.
  2. Be informed : Download the FEMA mobile app for disaster resources, weather alerts, and safety tips. The app provides a customizable checklist of emergency supplies, maps of open shelters and recovery centers, disaster survival tips, and weather alerts from the National Weather Service. The app also enables users to receive push notifications reminding them to take important steps to prepare their homes and families for disasters.
  3. Be prepared for a power outage : If you or anyone in your household depends on medical devices that are powered by electricity, make those items a first priority. Talk to your medical equipment company to find out what will happen to your equipment during a power outage. FEMA recommends each person has at least a three-day supply of extra batteries for your flashlights, radios, and other devices run on battery power. Visit this webpage for information.
  4. Know your community's evacuation plans : Many communities have designated "evacuation routes" and some even have evacuation zones. You will want to be familiar with these so that if your local authorities issue an evacuation order, you'll know exactly where to go.
America's PrepareAthon! is a year round, grassroots, community-based campaign to increase national preparedness. From now until May, America's PrepareAthon! and its broad range of partners, including DHS, will be promoting preparedness for specific hazards so that all of us can be better prepared for emergencies.

Visit the DHS Office of Emergency Preparedness website  or FEMA's Ready.gov for more information on other hazards, family planning, emergency kits, and becoming involved in your community.

Medicine and Drugged Driving -  Can Your Medicine Make Driving Dangerous?

Drugged driving - have you done it? We bet you have.  Millions of people suffer each year from seasonal allergies triggered by pollen from grass, weeds, or trees. For symptom relief, many head to their local pharmacy to purchase allergy products, usually oral antihistamines. Most people do not realize that many prescription and over-the-counter medicines can cause drowsiness and impair the ability to drive even when used according to the directions. It is extremely important to be sure to read the product label carefully before taking or giving any medicines. 
 
Consumers must  err on the side of caution when driving while using products like allergy medicines. According to recent news, drugged driving (driving while under the influence of drugs - legal (prescription/over-the-counter) or illegal) is on the rise across the country. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility recent report warns state officials of the growing problem of drug use on our roadways.

SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library will open at 12:30 pm 6/3

Due to the Green Living and Wellness Fair and YMCA Annual Hop Race being held at the Hillsborough Township Municipal Building on Saturday, June 3rd, the Library will have a delayed opening at 12:30 pm.

Summer Camp Registration
Summer Recreation Camp registrations are currently being accepted.  Camps for 5 to 11-year-olds are held at Auten Road and Amsterdam Schools.  Camp for 12 to 14-year-olds will be held at Hillsborough Middle School.  Tiny Camp for 4 and 5-year-olds will be at Hillsborough Elementary School.  Camps begin on Monday, June 26th and run for 8 weeks through August 18th.  Information and registration are available on the Parks & Recreation website.

News From Somerset County
You Can Help Curb Hunger in Somerset County!

Even though Somerset County is known for its affluence, food insecurity for children and adults is an enduring issue. Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer is urging residents to help change that by supporting the 23rd annual Curbing Hunger Month food drive.

State Sen. Kip Bateman, members of the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and food bank supporters gathered at the Food Bank Network of Somerset County to launch this year's program, which will help boost food supplies there and at the Franklin Township Food Bank and other local food pantries serving Somerset County residents.
