Principal Notes                                                 June 1, 2017
Dear Families,

This is our last Virtual Backpack for the year. It is hard to believe how quickly the school year has passed and come to an end. I would like to thank you for your faith, trust and commitment to the mission of St. Mary's.  It is because of your dedication of time, prayers, generosity and support of our efforts that make St. Mary's great!

Thank you to our enthusiastic faculty and staff who work tirelessly to provide a faith based education for our children. I am honored to be their colleague.  Thank you is not enough for all they consistently give to the ministry of Catholic education.

We welcome Mrs. Julie Swietlik as our new K3 aide.  She and Mrs. Maggie Lewis will make a wonderful team for our youngest students.

Tomorrow is graduation day for our 8th grade. We wish them all the best as they journey on to new places. Please keep them in your prayers at this special time.  Join us for mass tomorrow as we say goodbye to them.  Mass will be at 9:00 instead of 8:00. Our awards ceremony will follow directly after mass.

Please take time this summer to talk, play, and pray together. On behalf of the faculty and staff we wish you a safe and happy summer.  We look forward to seeing you in August.

Just a reminder, please make sure afterschool care and hot lunch balances are paid.  We would like to close our books at the end of the school year.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend.

Faithfully,

If you have moved or have a new email address or a new phone number, please let the school office know.
Make sure library books are returned to the SMV Library.

Hot Lunch News-- Remaining Hot Lunch Balances
The end of the year is coming!  Please remember to get your hot lunch balance up to zero, or in the positive.  Your child will not receive their memory book until their balance is at least zero.  Also note that any positive balance will carry over to next year.  What a great surprise at the beginning of the year when you don't have to add money right away!

Also, if your child is not returning to SMV next year, you are entitled to request a check for the remaining balance.  No checks will be cut automatically, and refunds are only offered to non-returning students.  Parents of graduating 8th graders an request a check, or that the balance is moved to a sibling.  Please fill out this form to submit a request:  https://goo.gl/forms/PadHCgJvPRgBmEMG2

Summer Camps

Summer Tutor
Enthusiastic elementary teacher with 23 years of classroom experience will tutor students in grades 1-6 in any subject. Susan Burbach, 262-784-8488.

First Graders got to explore the Milwaukee Brewers Dug Out.
Summer Keyboarding Challenge

Some say that with voice recognition software children will not need keyboarding skills in the near future. Untrue! Keyboarding will not disappear fast enough to save your students from typing homework, writing papers, sending e-mails, filling out applications and a multitude of other things. More importantly,  most standardized testing, including essay responses, are administered online. Strong keyboarding skills continue to be critical.
Our students at SMV are introduced to proper finger placement in the primary grades and by third grade they have formal keyboard instruction throughout the school year.
To keep everyone's skills sharp over the summer, Miss Benson is encouraging students to keep a Summer Keyboarding Log. Any student who practices 600 minutes during the summer will receive an out-of-uniform pass for a designated day in September. Although this activity is encouraged for students in grades 3-8, younger students can give it a try if you feel it is not too much pressure. See the Summer Keyboarding Log for suggested practice websites.

Field Day
The school weeks are fading away.  Summer is around the corner. But before the kids can yell "school's out" they get to participate in Field Day.
You know the day filled with funs, games, crafts and water balloons that they believe just magically happens.
You know the truth: it's time to volunteer.  Yes, we need you to spend a few hours in the sun, working at the bounce house and filling water balloons. We promise it will be fun....for the kids.
Field Day is Monday, June 5. There are many ways you can help. Check out the Sign Up Genius and remember how much your kids love to see your smiling face helping out at school!!

End of the School Year Pool Party
There are a few spots available for the End of School Year Pool Party on  Tuesday, June 6  at the Elm Grove Pool. For $40 per family, your family is invited for pizza, desserts and popcorn starting at  5 pm  followed by swimming from  6-9 pm . Beverages, both kid and adult, are available throughout the evening. To join in the fun, please send your check made out to St. Mary's Home and School to the office in an envelope labeled End of School Year Pool Party.

Concession Stand Coordinators Needed
We are looking for two parents to join the concession stand coordinator team for the 2017-2018 school year! The coordinator opens/closes the concession stand one weekend a month-you pick what works best for your schedule.  Volleyball seasons runs  Sept.-Oct., with games on Friday nights and Saturday mornings until mid afternoon.  Basketball season runs Dec.-Feb., with games Saturday mornings until mid-afternoon.  Opening involves unlocking everything, getting cash boxes out, and directing volunteers to get the food started.  Closing involves counting the cash boxes out, and directing volunteers in the clean-up process. This fulfills your concession duty requirement for all of your children who participate in SMV Athletics, for both the volleyball and basketball seasons.  If interested please contact Beth Parey at bparey@electricalsubstations.com or 262-821-0691.

Volleyball Camp
Coach Casey will be returning to SMV the week of July 24-27 to run volleyball camp for boys and girls currently in grades 3 through 7.  It is a FUN and instructional camp for players at all levels.  It is a great way to learn the skills needed to play for your school teams, or fine tune the skills of a club level player.  Kids will learn passing, setting, spiking and serving fundamentals while participating in fun games and drills.

Thank you to all of our students and parents who walked in the Memorial Day Parade.
