Over the past week, I have been lucky to observe some amazing lessons. In art class (Thank you MEF!), students were busy finishing up a weaving project. The class started off with an inquiry where students compared two notable artists works. Students looked at the famous paintings in order to compare similarities and differences between the two different painting styles. They took what they learned in their discussion and applied some of the techniques to their own creations.
Today, I observed a lesson where the teacher did an interactive read aloud. Students mapped out the changes in the characters' emotions from page to page. After completing their map, they compared it to one that they had created for a different book that was written by the same author. The room was filled with discussion and great discovery. Each question that was aimed at the teacher was answered with, "What do you think?" Students dug deep and had some great revelations.
Both lessons were strong examples of the higher level thinking activities that push students beyond just answering questions. Students made connections and were able to tell why they answered in a certain way. Way to go!!!

Hello LP Parents,
Another busy month has ended and we're jumping right into February. Hopefully your kids enjoyed the two assemblies which the PTA sponsored during January. The Magic of Science and The Power of One were chosen to get kids excited about science, and to educate them about being upstanders in our world. Last week we had a very competitive LP Spelling Bee with Allison C. taking the first place title and Marilyn J. and Lev P. coming in second and third place. Congrats to our fabulous spellers!
February has arrived and we often associate this month with kindness and love. Fitting in with that theme, LP is kicking off a new Kindness Club.
This student club will meet monthly to focus on big and small acts of kindness. First up, the club will be painting BUDDY BENCHES for our school playgrounds. The first meeting will be Thursday, February 22nd at 12:25 in the Art Room and will be open to
all
2nd-5th graders.
Last week, we kicked off our Science Fair season at LP as well. This is an exciting time and we hope that many kids will join us in this process. Applications are available online at: https://lpes-msd-ca.schoolloop.com/sciencefair or there are paper copies in the office as well. Science Fair is open to all students in grades 2nd to 5th. Students may work individually or in groups of up to three. All applications are due in the LP Office by 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 15th. The Science Fair will take place on the evening of Wednesday, March 21st at 6:30 p.m, so mark your calendars!
Our
February general PTA meeting
will be held next
Wednesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m.
in Room 4 at LP. This is the only evening meeting of the year and we encourage you to come out and join us!
Superintendent Bruce Burns
will be our Special Guest for the first portion of our meeting. He will be updating us on some of the current happenings in the district, including the calendar task force, cultural proficiency committee and improvements from Measure V funds, so it should be an informative session. We will also be hearing from 3rd grade Teacher Mrs. Thompson and Ms. Richards, in addition to covering our PTA business for the month.
As always, we encourage our members to keep in touch with us and reach out with questions or suggestions. We recently sent out a survey regarding PTA events and communication. If you could kindly take a few moments to complete the survey here we would appreciate it!
Finally,
we still have some positions available for some of our PTA committees for next year, including a Hot Lunch Coordinator, Fall Carnival Chairs, 4th/5th Grade Book Club Chair, Emergency Preparedness Co-Chair and Junior Achievement Chair. The 2018 LP Science Fair season kicked off last week. Students in 2nd through 5th grades heard about the Science Fair and are hopefully excited to start thinking of ideas for their experiments. The 2018 Science Fair will be held on Wednesday, March 21st from 6:30-7:30, so there is plenty of time to perform all of those awesome experiments!
Applications are due
on or before
Thursday, February 15th.

Please print the application, fill it out, staple, and return it to the office by 4:00 p.m. on the 15th.
Note:
There are some printed applications in the office as well.
Applications will be reviewed and returned by Friday, February 23rd. Once students receive the approved application, let the experiments begin!
Some items to remember:
- Science Fair is open to all students grades 2-5
- Minimum of one student and maximum of three students per project
- One application per project!
- Parent signature required on each application.
- Please complete both pages of application, staple and return to office.

4th/5th Grade Book Club News
Our next book is "Crenshaw" by Katherine Applegate - a phenomenal story worth reading.
The next book club meeting will be on Wednesday, March 28th.

The yearbook is underway and we need photos! Hundreds of photos, thousands of photos, millions of photos!
We want every child to be represented in the yearbook, so please consider sending in pictures of your child at school, the Fun Run, Variety Show, Halloween parade, spirit assemblies, field trips and holiday parties. We would also really love pictures from special events (Native American Day, Immigration Day, etc.)
Please title your emails to help us organize photos. Even simple titles such as "Mrs. Pearce Kindergarten" or "4th grade field trip" would be great.

Join us for an engaging evening of learning as Merve Lapus, Director of Professional Services at Common Sense Media, will speak on Ways to Have Critical Family Conversations About Balancing Digital Life, Managing Apps and Staying Positive on Social Media. He will share eye-opening videos and statistics from surveys of more than 2,600 8-18 year-olds and over 1,800 parents, and lead us in a discussion about strategies for tackling the parenting issues surrounding devices and digital life.
In his presentation, Merve will focus on tips and suggestions for how families can address important issues of handling media and technology. He will introduce us to Common Sense Media's Connecting Families webpage, which offers tools to open up great conversations about tough topics like Cyberbullying, Video Games and the Internet. Since SRVUSD uses Common Sense Media as the main resource to teach digital citizenship lessons in all our schools, parents will get a closer look at the messages and instructions that our kids receive in class. We had 392 TK-5th graders participate in the LP Mock Caldecott. There was a clear medal winner with 30% of the vote. The honors race was much closer with 5 titles chosen. The 2018 LP Mock Caldecott Medal winner is
The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Adam Rex. We had seventy-nine 4th and 5th graders participate in the LP Mock Newbery. The winning book won by 5 votes.

 The American Library Association Youth Media Awards were announced on Monday. I will be sharing the results with students. This week, in honor of Valentine's Day, we are reading three newly published books about love and friendship.

MEF Auction Gala- Tickets on Sale 2/20
Tickets for the MEF Auction Gala, Bubbles to Burgundy, will go on sale Tuesday, February 20! Last year's event sold out, so don't wait and buy your tickets early.
The Gala, taking place on Saturday, April 14th at the Moraga Country Club, will include exclusive silent and live auctions, food and dancing. All proceeds will benefit the Moraga Education Foundation which supports every student attending public schools in Moraga, every day!
