Whoever you are, whomever you love,
However you express your identity;
Whatever your situation in life,
Whatever your experience of the holy,
Your presence here is a gift.
Whether you are filled with sadness,
Overflowing with joy,
Needing to be alone with yourself,
Or eager to engage with others,
You have a place here.
All are welcome here.

Words of Wikstrom

In perhaps one of her most well-known poems, Emily Dickenson wrote of hope:

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all ...

My mother had a friend named Pauli Murray.  I've mentioned her before, and will say again that if you've never heard of her, not only are you not alone but you should immediately Google her name.  Her take on hope - as viewed through her experiences as the first African American woman to do a great many things - is a little bit different than Dickenson's:

Hope is a crushed stalk
Between clenched fingers
Hope is a bird's wing
Broken by a stone.
Hope is a word in a tuneless ditty -
[...]
Hope is a song in a weary throat.

June Social Action Collection

This month TJMC-UU will be supporting The Women's Initiative through our Social Action Collection on June 18th. This is an amazing local non-profit that provides women with counseling and social support so they can transform life challenges into positive change and growth. The Women's Initiative offers a walk-in wellness clinic, individual counseling, group therapy, as well as education and outreach.

Our congregation has a history of supporting The Women's Initiative through our donations so that women in our community will have access to innovative, effective, evidence-based mental health care. This organization's values are consistent with our UU values and they believe every woman has an innate capacity for healing that, once uncovered and directed, results in better mental and physical health. Our continued support is critical to help address the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of women in our community.

Please join us on Sunday June 18th at 10AM. A representative from The Women's Initiative will be speaking and we will be asking for your support during the plate collection. Thank you for your ongoing generosity.

Sara Gondwe

Born in 1949 in Beaver Dam, WI, Ms. Gondwe earned a B.A. degree in Philosophy and a Masters degree in Education.  This earned her a career as a Reading Specialist for students in kindergarten through 12th grades.  She spearheaded both the Gettysburg Area reading council and the Adams County Literacy Council in PA.  Currently she is a volunteer literacy tutor with Literacy Volunteers in Charlottesville.

She and her late husband, a native of Malawi, lived in this small Central African country for 3 years.  The influence of the bright and festive colors of Malawi and Senegal are evident in her art.  Ms. Gondwe moved to the Charlottesville area in 2013 to fulfill a long held desire to create.  Retirement inspired and challenged her to begin painting.
