First generation corn borer. Check fields that do not have the Bt trait for corn borer. The predicted warm weather may favor corn borer activity. One established larvae per plant could produce a 6 % yield loss. This   article has more info and a spreadsheet to help with corn borer decisions.
Corn rootworm (CRW). There have been 502 soil growing degree days (GDDs) for Newell as of 6/15/17. Fifty percent CRW egg hatch occurs at 684 to 767 soil base 52 GDDs.
 
Dig and check corn roots 10-14 days after peak egg hatch- because feeding injury will be fresh. Assess corn rootworm feeding and adjust management strategies if the average injury is above   0.5 on a 0-3 rating scale.

Kanawha Field day. The Northern Iowa Research Farm field day will be held at the farm near Kanawha on June 22 at 9:00 a.m. Speakers include Matt Schnabel, Erin Hodgson, John Sawyer, Daren Mueller, Angie Rieck-Hinz and Paul Kassel. A noon lunch is available.
Nitrogen and Water Week. A field day on nitrogen (N) fertilizer use and nitrate losses will be held from 9:15 to 12:15 on June 29 at the Northwest Research Farm at Sutherland.  
 
Profitable rates of N, cover crops, N inhibitors, N application timing and their effects on nitrate levels in tile drainage water will be discussed.
 
Early registration is encouraged. Two (1.5 SW, 0.5 NM) CCA credits are available. Cost is $25 and includes lunch.
