NYCOMEC held its 16th Annual Research Poster Competition, in conjunction with its Spring Grand Rounds, on May 25, 2017, at the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel.
This annual competition
has been a forum for NYCOMEC trainees to showcase their experimental research and case study posters, exchange ideas, and
get direct feedback on their work from experts

2017 Spring Grand Rounds
On Thursday, May 25, 2017, approximately 200 faculty and trainees attended NYCOMEC's semi-annual Grand Rounds which was held at the LaGuardia Airport Mariott Hotel in East Elmhurst, NY.
The keynote speaker, Jay Lombard, D.O., Co-founder, Chief Scientific Officer, and Medical Director, Genomind, discussed overall health trends in medicine today, as well as preventive medicine, with a focus on providing patient-centric care. He also discussed the resurgence in popularity of core philosophies of osteopathic medicine in providing care to patients today.

, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Global Health, New York Institute of Technology, gave an engaging presentation on
Leadership Strategies for Everyday Practice, providing
attendees with practical points for applying leadership strategies into their daily activities and at all levels of interaction. His presentation also focused on time management and responses to everyday situations within the leadership continuum.
Alexander Chiu, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Ross Medical Corporation, presented an overview on the use of telemedicine, including the laws surrounding reimbursement of telemedicine visits, the CMS guidelines and how they apply to providers across different specialties, and how to evaluate telemedicine vendors to integrate telehealth applications into ones practice.
Steven Golinowski, D.O., Director of Medical Education and Family Medicine Residency Program Director, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, provided attendees with a "toolbox" for success with respect to HIV prevention and discussed at length the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV acquisition. He also provided an overview of the CDC guidelines on clinical eligibility for PrEP and HIV PrEP on-treatment follow-up, inclusive of the CDC guidelines.
Lawrence Kobak, D.P.M., J.D., Partner, Kern Augustine Conroy & Shoppmann, PC, gave an insightful
presentation on physician employment contracts, emphasizing the meaning of a Restrictive Covenant and how it might impact a physicians's future practice of medicine. He also discussed how physician pay is calculated based upon contract language and the importance of understanding what they are signing prior to actually signing a contract.

NYCOMEC-NYIT Healthcare Leadership Certificate Course Continues Successfully
Hospital executives, physicians and managers from NYCOMEC member institutions participated in the third session of the newly developed Healthcare Leadership Certificate Course, which was held at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center on May 19, 2017. Stuart Almer,
FACHE, Administrator/Chief Operating Officer, Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, presented on
Conflict Resolution and Negotiation and their relevance in the workplace setting.

NYCOMEC Sponsors Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Bernards Medical Center
NYCOMEC will serve as Institutional Sponsor for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, AR. The program was granted pre-accreditation status effective May 17, 2017. Sara Nehring, D.O., was appointed Director of Medical Education and Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, overseeing a complement of five Internal Medicine residency positions.

NYITCOM 36th Hooding Ceremony
"You have learned more over these four years than is called for in any other professional field," Wolfgang Gilliar, D.O., Dean, NYITCOM, told the graduates. "You have passed the most demanding examinations that can be found anywhere." Dr. Gilliar added that the Class of 2017 has a duty to use the competence and confidence they gained at NYITCOM to treat patients with compassion and courage.

TouroCOM and NYITCOM Class of 2019 Receives White Coats
TouroCOM-Harlem Class of 2019 participated in the symbolic rite of passage of donning white coats as they prepare to enter their final two years of medical school on clinical rotations.
NYIT Vice President for Medical Affairs and Global Health
Jerry Balentine, D.O., issued a challenge to the Class of 2019: to embrace change.
"Medicine is a profession that does not like change and usually fights change," he said. "Change is good. It moves us forward, it lets our patients teach us, and makes us better doctors."

Physician Burnout, Depression and Suicide Addressed by ACGME
Thomas J. Nasca, M.D., MACP, Chief Executive Officer, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), expressed his concern on physician burnout, depression and suicide in a letter addressed to the Graduate Medical Education Community,
and discussed the significant impact this issue has on medical students, faculty and trainees.

ACGME Back to Bedside Initiative
On May 24, 2017, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced the
Back to Bedside Initiative, a competitive funding opportunity created by residents for residents, to inspire new ways to foster greater meaning in their daily work. The ACGME will fund up to five awards of $10,000 per year, for up to a two-year period.

World's Smallest Pacemaker
St. Bernards Medical Center became the first hospital in Arkansas to offer the world's smallest pacemaker for patients with bradycardia.
The procedure was performed on April 24, 2017 by Devi G. Nair, M.D., FHRS, Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at St. Bernards Heart and Vascular Center.

St. Barnabas Hospital Wins Sim Wars
St. Barnabas Hospital won the 2017 Sim Wars, a medical competition where residents and doctors are tested on high-tech mannequins on a number of different scenarios that involve crisis care and treatment.
The Bronx hospitals are hoping to make Sim Wars an annual competition for their residents and doctors.
