This is a special pre-Annual Conference issue of The Current Week in Review.

Next week, nearly 2,400 persons will gather for the 21st session of the Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference.

There are several pre-Conference events but things officially get underway at 10 a.m. when concurrent sessions of clergy and laity will meet. Much preparation has gone into this year's conference.

Here are a few things you can do to get connected:

Set up Sched on your mobile, tablet or laptop:  IGRC Communications, in cooperation with sched.org, has a mobile app for all things Annual Conference.
  • Go to the IGRC sched page.
  • There, you will see the full agenda for the Annual Conference
  • In the upper right-hand corner, you will see the option to Sign Up or Log In. If you do not have an account, you can set one up; if you have an account, merely log in and the Annual Conference event will be linked to your account.
  • Pre-select the annual conference schedule items that apply to you and build a personal agenda for your days at Annual Conference.
  • Each morning you will receive an email with that day's pre-selected events. You also have the option of placing an icon on your Home Screen and your schedule will be just a click away.
  • Should scheduling events change, such as room numbers, they will automatically be updated on the Sched app and "pushed" to your devices instantly.
The Daily Current: Subscribers of the Current Week in Review and registrants to Annual Conference won't have to do a thing. Each morning, there will be a recap of the previous day's events on Friday and Saturday mornings.

The Current: IGRC Communications has already published a pre-Conference edition of The Current. Copies should have arrived this week. An additional 2,000 copies were printed and will be available at the tables of attendees on Thursday afternoon. Following Annual Conference, the July issue will be in production on June 12-13 with the target date of publication and distribution of June 16-17. This will enable persons who make reports to the Annual Conference to have the information in a timely manner.

Live Stream of Annual Conference:  For the eighth year, Annual Conference will be streamed live at: www.igrc.org/ac2017live.  In addition for the first time, the broadcast will also be simulcasted to the Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference Facebook group via Facebook Live. You will need to join the group in order to view the broadcast. Archived copies will be posted as soon as the session is completed on the webstream page of the IGRC website.

Social media:  The hashtag for Twitter is #2017IGRC. A feed gathering tweets with that hashtag can be found at: www.igrc.org/ac2017live.

Fallout from lack of state budget continues

Illinois State Capitol
Amid the state's budget disasters, a mom wonders if she should give up her adoptive daughter.
Not because the mom doesn't love her. Exactly the opposite.

Giving the girl back to the state - even one as dysfunctional as Illinois - might be the only way the lass can get the care she badly needs.

This is one of the painful decisions that has to be made following last week's announcement by The Baby Fold that the lack of reimbursement from the State of Illinois has forced the agency to close its Residential Treatment Center -- the only one in Central Illinois -- effective June 30. The closure affects 14 of the more than 1,000 children served.

In a statement, the agency said, "The State of Illinois has neglected to invest what is necessary to pay providers who offer the specialized, intensive treatment required for children in residential care. Rates paid to The Baby Fold for these services have not increased in over 10 years. Even after the downsizing, The Baby Fold was forced to subsidize $1.6 million over the past two years to compensate for the lack of adequate State funding. Additionally, the budget impasse has created an atmosphere of uncertainty about the levels of funding that may be available for this type of programming in the future.

"While the discontinuation of residential services will only impact 14 out of 1,000+ children and families served by The Baby Fold, every child is precious to us."

The 2017 Annual Conference will formally launch of a $2.5 million campaign aimed at endowing the spiritual life programs of the five conference child welfare agencies -- The Baby Fold, Chaddock, Cunningham Children's Home, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House and Spero Family Services (formerly the United Methodist Children's Home). The launch will take place during Friday's All-Conference Dinner and Banquet.
