TABC Delegation to YUNMUN
Represents with Distinction
TABC's delegation to the Yeshiva University National Model United Nations (YUNMUN) represented their countries, and their school, with distinction. Coach Moshe Zharnest (himself a TABC alumnus of the class of 2005) proudly reported that the TABC students had 100% participation at davening and at every program, and that numerous YU staff and representatives from other schools told him how impressed they were with the TABC delegation.

TABC's representatives won four awards, including two honorable mentions by Eli Rifkind '19 and Jacob Lerer '19, and two overall best delegates  by Yonah Kilimnick '18 and Gabe Gerszberg '19. They came in 5th place for the overall conference and were number one among schools from Bergen County. TABC alumni also represented the school, as Azi Fine '15, Ariel Hochman '13 and Avi Strauss '12 were among those who helped run the event.
Tani Greengart & Shlomi Helfgot  Named National  Merit  Scholarship  Finalists
Torah Academy of Bergen Country is proud to announce that two of our students, Tani Greengart and Sholmi Helfgot have been named as finalists in the2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Of the over 1.6 million students who entered the National Merit Scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Testm only about 15,000 Finalists throughout the nation have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise. All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments-without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay.
Ionic Naming in Chemistry
This week Mrs. Kopel's chemistry class learned how to name compounds. The students played a card game: first they had to match up metals and nonmetals correctly, then they had to write down the formulas and names of the ionic compounds they created. The group with the most correctly named compounds won!

Mrs. Ruskin's Mitosis Lesson is Sweet
In Mrs Ruskin's 9th grade biology classes, students learned all about the cell cycle and mitosis and modeled the stages of mitosis using candy! It was a delicious lesson!
A Puzzle in Mrs. Shavelson's Class
Riddle me this: What does the new blockbuster film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle have to do with Oedipus Rex ? How is Elsa in Frozen a tragic hero? Mrs. Shavelson's English 9A can tell you as students gave presentations on traits of ancient Greek tragedy found in modern movies and TV shows. It is not only Oedipus the King who has Hubris and suffers a reversal of fortune (as well as an epiphany) as we in the audience experience all the symptoms of what Aristotle called "catharsis." Just about every modern work of film and fiction works this way. Long live Sophocles.
Thermal Physics in Mrs. Kopel's Class
As 11G finished their study of thermal physics, they compared different ways to make popcorn. Using conduction, convection, and radiation, they popped popcorn kernels three different ways and compared the rates and types of heat transfer.
Rabbi Shlomo Zuckier: What is Research?
The Olam HaChochma Distinguished Scholars Program had the great privilege of being visited by Rabbi Shlomo Zuckier. Rabbi Zuckier is currently a member of YU's prominent Kollel Elyon and a PhD student at Yale, receiving his degree in Ancient Jewish History. The topic of his presentation was not only relevant to Torah learning, but on research in general and especially what it means to research something on a Torah level. As do all typical scholars luncheons occur, we began the luncheon with food and after settling in, we began to delve into the topic on "The Importance of Research: What is Kapparah?" The first underlying question which was the basis of the presentation was the meaning of Kapparah. While some may think that this sounds like an odd time of year to be discussing pre-Yom Kippur minhagim, this is quite the opposite. What Mr. Zuckier explained is that Kapparah itself is not defined or even mentioned straight out in the Tanach, which is why one must begin to research, all according to the PhD candidate. Though a rough but evidently correct definition, Purgation is the true meaning of kapparah, but there's one issue, how do we connect this to research? The answer was first considered by looking at various sources in the Tanach, which only left a giant puzzle to piece together by connecting the Tanach's results with our rough definition. When examined, the chumash actually does allude to some connections. In Vayikra 4:26, the word כפר is represented as helping a Kohen render himself tahor. It shows up yet again in 16:16-17 when it is shown that the Kohen does כפרות and is מכפר the kodesh from any and all aveirot of Klal Yisroel on their behalf. While this may just seem like a giant load of mumbo jumbo with no point, have faith. These pesukim and a little research, all according to Mr. Zuckier, show that by carrying out such practices you come down to the main point of kapparah (aside from atonement), and that is atonement. Atonement's definition is the final question, which is when we had to consider all the facts. So we know the rough definition of כפרה, that it fixes both impurity and a relationship with Hashem. Perhaps the true definition is to mend our personal relationship with Hashem period. The true answer still lay a mystery, which is what Rabbi Zuckier dedicated the program to, to go beyond the facts and question. Questioning that leads to answers, but only through research. That, said Rabbi Zukier, is why we research, and whether it be Torah or Secular, we will always strive for an answer, one found through research.
Rabbi Jachter Delivers Shiur at YU
On Tuesday evening Rabbi Jachter delivered a Shiur at Yeshiva University in connection with the SOY Seforim Sale. Rabbi Jachter discussed why Hashem does not make open miracles in each geenration, a topic he addresses in his new book "Reason to Believe: Rational Explanations of Orthodox Jewish Faith", published by the Menorah imprint of Koren publications. A number of alumni joined the Shiur including Jacob Tepler '16 pictured with Rabbi Jachter.
