Bookseller Recommendations

Gillian Recommends:

Memory's Last Breath by Gerda Saunders
Beautiful, intelligent, independent Gerda Saunders was diagnosed with dementia at age 61.  A South African immigrant and professor of Gender Studies, Gerda was trained as a scientist and approached her devastating diagnosis by recording field notes of her decline.  Her eloquent memoir brims with scientific and philosophical observations on memory, personality, and identity, and offers us an extraordinary inside look at her deeply personal experience of losing the intellectual capacity that so defines her. What a remarkable memoir!

Lorna Recommends:

You Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Sherman Alexie
What does a writer do to make sense of his thoughts and feelings when his mother passes away?  He writes.  Because I have read his novels, I know Sherman Alexie can make me laugh and make me cry, but his amazing memoir stunned me with its honesty and brilliance.

William Recommends:

The Force by Don Winslow
This novel is a  sociological study of corrupt police officers in the sneaky guise of a crime thriller, and it is riveting.  As seen through one corrupt, yet ethical (it's complicated) cop, the reader tours the ranks as he deals with pushers, gangs, mafia, the FBI, and Internal Affairs, all while attempting to keep his balance with his addict-girlfriend and his needy family.  Winslow examines our country's police force and the obstacles it faces -- many of which are self-inflicted.  It's a very important topic in these times, and Winslow never flinches, even when the reader does!

Marilyn Recommends :

A House Among The Trees by Julia Glass
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which is a perfect blend of the thoughtful and the delightful.  It's the story of an unusual bond between a world-famous children's book writer and his assistant, as well as his legacy of work.  I met the author at our event and asked her if there were plans to publish the fictional teen trilogy featured in the book, and she said that it was not in the works.  I believe it should be.  A passage about a petition to save a tree enchanted me.
