In previous newsletters we have highlighted the many wonderful qualities of the J 105. It's performance, balance and ease of handling make it one of the most enjoyable boats you'll ever sail.
At first look the J 105 may seem intimidating but once you sail this boat you'll see just how easy it is and you'll be smiling from ear to ear. We want you to find out just how nice this boat is to sail, so this month we have scheduled a couple of orientation sails to get you familiar with the boat.
If you have been thinking about chartering the J 105 and would like to learn more about it, please join us for our orientation sail this month.

Knowledge
Staycation Sailing
by John Zolck
Dreaming of a sailing vacation but dreading the hassle of traveling (delayed flights, missed connections, missing luggage)? Spend more time sailing and less money by taking a "Staycation".
The San Francisco Bay offers many fabulous destinations that are comparable with some of the greatest locations around the world. You can travel to the sunny San Joaquin Delta where the water is warm and fresh. Explore the interstate of the gold rush era (the Sacramento River). Or if you are less ambitious, set your sights on Angel Island, Sausalito, Alameda, or Jack London Square.
Here are a few tips for cruising the San Francisco Bay:
1) Currents: Use the Ebb and Flood to your advantage. (Note areas that have Ebb chop and try to pass around slack)
2) Departure times: Leaving early is good if you plan to motor, otherwise 10 am to 6 pm are good for sailing. Do not try to cover to much ground in one day.
3) Wind: The wind around San Francisco is probably some of the most predictable wind in the world. Reef early and deep.
4) Plan ahead: Contact the Harbor master and make a reservation. It is always easier to cancel than get a late booking. (You will need Proof of Insurance, Registration, and general boat specifications. A picture of the boat helps)
5) Anchoring: Unless you are very familiar with the area, only anchor as a last resort. Again current and wind in the bay will dictate what you can do.
6) Sail year round. We are in one of the few places in the world were you can sail year around. Take advantage of it.
7) Ask: Don't be one of those people. Ask for for directions / help. Have a briefing with your crew on the plan. PowerPoints with marked up charts / picture of docks in Marina work well for communicating your plan.
8) Prep your crew / boat: Make sure you have at least one other person on the boat that knows what to do. Use a check list when preparing for a cruise.
9) The Delta is warm and the water is fresh. Think swimming / fishing / SUP.
10) Have Fun: Look for smaller, off the beaten track marinas to build your skills: San Leandro Marin; Coyote Point; Oyster Point; Serria Point; Grand Marina; Clipper Yacht Harbor; Paridise Cove; Point Richmond; Vallejo; Ayala cove to name a few.

Training Videos
Learn tacking, jibing, docking and other boat handling skills with
Instructor David Pregeant
for FREE on
the Tutorials page on our site:
or
go to Youtube.com and search for
ssrwc
or
daytime sailor
These tutorials are videos on a wide variety of topics ranging from jibing and handling jib sheets to docking and putting a boat away properly. Other videos demonstrate safe winch use or share the excitement and beauty of racing under spinnaker.
Many of the videos are educational and are used in the classroom for teaching Basic Keelboat Sailing and and Basic Coastal Cruising. Most of the people in the videos are students, and you can learn by watching them
perform maneuvers
- sometimes hesitantly or with occasional mistakes. When you notice mistakes in the videos, you will find it easier to perform
techniques
correctly yourself.
We will add more videos as we complete them. We think students and sailors will find it useful to view them routinely. If you have suggestions or ideas for topics, let us know!
Video training tutorials created by Spinnaker Sailing have been added to our web site. Get to them them by clicking on "Tutorials" at www.spinnakersailing.com.
