Renewal Team Meeting:
February 18 - March 18 - Weekly Lenten book discussions will be held after services, based on "Pilgrim Road: A Benedictine Journey Through Lent" by Albert Holtz. The book consists of short daily meditations with a different overall theme for each week of Lent based on Holtz's pilgrimages and extensive travels. If you have not signed up for a book and would like one, they are also available from Blue Hill Books or Amazon.

The Quest for the Tenth Bishop of Maine
The Diocesan Discernment Committee has invited us to participate in an open
conversation to help them in the Bishop Search Process. The responses we
provide will be used in creating a profile that describes our diocese to potential
candidates for Bishop, and will help clarify the qualities we are asking for in our next Bishop.
Following Sunday's service we will gather to discuss the open-ended questions
below. For our seasonal members and those who are away or traveling,
I urge you to also think about and respond to these questions, and send them
to me via email ( [email protected]) or via hard copy to my attention at the church
office: P.O. Box 305, Deer Isle, ME 04627.
Please have your input to me by
February 19th. As requested by the Diocesan Discernment Committee, parish
responses are to be summarized and submitted back to them by February 26th.
Please think and pray about these questions for discussion:
1. Who are you as a parish?
What do you value and how do you demonstrate that?
What stories/foundational events have shaped you?
What do you want the new bishop to know about you?
2. Where do you want to go as a parish?
How close are you to getting there?
What gifts do you have that will help you get there?
What challenges lie in your path?
3. How would you describe your parish's relationship with the diocese?
What would you like your relationship to be in the future?
What qualities in a bishop would facilitate this relationship?

Women's Wilderness Retreat 2018
No matter how you choose to get there, the annual St. Brendan's Women's
Retreat to Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps promises to be another memorable
trip, taking place this year Tuesday, September 4th through Friday, September 7th. This gorgeous and private 1885 camp is located inside Baxter State Park AND (the camp, not the park) is accessible by a 3.3 mile hike or by float plane.

Scripture Notes for the First Sunday in Lent:
On this first Sunday in Lent our attention is focused on those who will be baptized
at Easter. The final preparation of the candidates is the primary purpose of this season. The involvement of all members of the Church in the Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, as well as intensified study of Holy Scripture, is our way of sharing with these candidates in their time of preparation.
In the Old Testament reading today we have a prefiguring of Baptism. Noah and
his family are saved from death in the flood and God makes a Covenant with them.
In Baptism we are saved through water and made a part of the new Covenant established in Jesus' death and resurrection.
The reading from 1 Peter is an early Christian reflection on the meaning of the story of Noah in the light of Jesus' dying and rising. Baptism gives us a share in more than earthly life; it makes us part of God's eternal Kingdom.
The Gospel reading today describes Jesus' response to his own baptism and
anointing by the Spirit. He spent forty days in the wilderness where his vocation was tested. We too spend these forty days in prayer and fasting as God leads us to discover anew the call he gives us in Baptism.

We pray for those on our prayer list in special need of our prayers: Rev. Edward Dufresne, Larry Snowden,William Rice Sr., Elaine Graham, Patricia P, Gray Pierson,
Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Kathy Gray, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Nancy Stearns, Andrew Harriman, Tom Davenport, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Sen. John McCain, Henry 'Hank' Millon, George A. Smith, Gladys Smith, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Claire. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,

We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the needy and the hungry. For the sick and those who care for them.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the Church of the Province of Central Africa.
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for North Sedgwick Baptist Church.
