In 1983 Porsche, with financing from Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG), developed a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine for use in the McLaren MP4/2 Formula One car the following season.

The TAG Porsche McLaren combination was an overwhelming success, with Niki Lauda and Alain Prost winning 18 Grand Prix races and a World Driving Championship apiece  as well as bringing home consecutive Formula One Wor ld Constructors' Championships to McLaren International in 1984 and 1985.

Prost repeated as World Champion in 1986 with the McLaren TAG Turbo but the engines were retired after the 1987 season after scoring a total of 25 Grand Prix wins, 7 Pole Positions, 18 Fastest Laps and 54 Podium finishes over just 68 races.

In the early 1990s, Ron Dennis authorized the sale of McLaren's entire inventory of TAG Turbo engines and parts to private individuals. Less than 100 engine block assemblies in various forms were released for sale. A few were offered in full running condition but most were offered to collectors as memorabilia along with pistons, valves, cams, crankshafts and KKK Turbo units.

The Motorsport Collector acted as agent for US sales of these engines and parts when they were initially released.

The display engines and parts were snapped up by collectors worldwide and were soon changing hands at multiples of their original price. Some V6 blocks were restored and converted into custom built coffee tables or wine racks, others were displayed in their original patina as seen here. A relatively small quantity of the distinctive 'TAG Turbo' c am covers were made available and became highly sought after collectors items, selling for thousands of dollars each.  In recent years, the TAG engines and parts have virtually disappeared into private collections.

We're pleased to offer two of these Formula One World Championship winning TAG Turbo Porsche engine block assemblies on behalf of a TMC customer.

Each is offered as-is with 2 x TAG Turbo cam covers, 2 x cylinder heads and a numbered engine block, as seen here.  They have been warehouse stored for the past 20+ years.
