"My service on the CREW Board was one of the highlights of my career. It was a rewarding opportunity to work alongside the best talent in the industry and collectively, have an impact on the advancement of women in the commercial real estate field". -Anne B. Vinh, Managing Director, Capital Markets Group

"One of the most gratifying boards I have been privileged to serve on has been the CREW DC board. The CREW DC board is a strategic board comprised of exceptionally talented and dedicated women. The honor of being elected to the board is taken seriously by all as we carry out the mission of supporting and developing careers for women in real estate. The enhanced knowledge and resulting friendships is a bonus to board service with CREW. Thank you CREW DC for the honor! Good luck to all our applicants for the 2018 board." - Barbara McDuffie, Managing Director of Business Development, Baker Tilly

Committee Corner: The EDU Committee

The CREW EDU committee strives to inform and educate the CREW DC membership on exciting new projects occurring throughout the Washington, DC area. We tend to focus on emerging neighborhoods and new trends in building use and development. Some of our events have included:

* An in-depth look at the impact of self-driving vehicles and their potential effect on real estate. We heard from Revathi Greenwood of CBRE on this topic in March and had a lively discussion about the future of autonomous cars.

* In April, we partnered with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Fanelli McClain Architects to discuss aging office buildings in DC. The decision to renovate or relocate is prevalent in this current market and it is important to understand the factors involved.

* At the start of May, we looked into the inner workings of e-lofts, an unprecedented community of premium lofts in Alexandria, Virginia. Melanie Domres of Cafritz Interests and Novus Residences took us on a tour of this patent-pending facility and showed us what makes this building so unique.

This coming July, CREW EDU will be highlighting the use of timber in building construction. This event is in conjunction with the National Building Museum's (NBM) current exhibition: Timber City. Per NBM's website, "timber is the only building material [that] can reduce carbon emissions and remove carbon from the atmosphere and move us towards more sustainable, healthy, and beautiful buildings and cities." Stay tuned for this event date - speakers and details will be forthcoming!

We are always looking for new educational material across all sectors of the real estate industry as CREW DC believes it is important to highlight local speakers and projects via tours and panel discussions. If you have any suggestions for future educational tours and events, please feel free to contact co-chairs, Dana Strickland ([email protected]) and/or Lori Steenhoek ([email protected]). In addition, we are always looking for new committee members so please contact us if you are interested. It is a great way to participate in CREW DC and make the most of your membership.

"CREW EDU provides the support and encouragement to speak up with ideas and execute them. If I did not have the support system found in CREW EDU, I wouldn't be so bold to share new findings within the industry." - Leslie Gahagan of Colliers International

President's Message

Phyllis Liebman Brill
2017  President

Dear Members,

I am thrilled to announce that we have partnered with CREW NOVA and CREW Suburban Maryland on another CNCC program, Connecting Future Leaders. This mentorship program is like no other with valuable assessments provided for both the mentors and the protégés, personal coaching, networking, professional development and a legacy project. CREW NOVA has offered this program to their members for the last several years, fine tuning it along the way. And, this Fall, it will be offered to all CNCC members! More information will be available at the CNCC lunch program on June 15th. You won't want to miss it!

Having participated in several leadership programs over the years as well as CREW Network's Inaugural mentorship program in 2011, I can tell you that the assessments alone are worth doing this. With the coaching aspect provided for both the protégés and the mentors, it's even more amazing! The program is structured to ensure both protégés and mentors get the most out of this 10 month program. If you commit, you won't be disappointed!

For those who have ever considered participating in a mentorship program, you will want to hear all about this one. And even if this is not something you are considering right now, you will be inspired after hearing about the participants' experiences. Please join us on June 15th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Mayflower to learn more about this incredible opportunity and hear first-hand accounts on how this program can change your life.

Sincerely,

Phyllis Liebman Brill
