The Urban Resources Initiative (URI), the City of New Haven is offering FREE TREES to be planted along the street in front of your home or business. Renters and owners are eligible. Trees beautify the city, improve the air, reduce flooding, help wildlife, and increase property values. Adopting a tree also supports the local workforce. All you have to do is water your tree with 25 gallons per week and watch it grow!

this online form. You can view a catalog of street trees here, and URI staff will work with you to select a tree that suits your preferences. Each tree and location is reviewed by a certified arborist before planting.

February 14, The New Haven Independent, by Christopher Peak- "Westvillers came out to a zoning hearing to support two new plans to build up and boost nightlife in their commercial village, while upstairs music teachers added a discordant note. The occasion was a hearing at the Hall of Records of the Board of Zoning Appeals, which considered plans for a new apartment complex anchored by a resurrected Delaney's Bar & Tap Room as well as a nighttime liquor permit for Manjares Bistro. The zoners concluded the hearing without a vote, sending the matter to the City Plan Commission for recommendations before a final vote next month. The couple who own Manjares Bistro are seeking special exceptions to serve liquor without providing any extra parking, where nine spots are required, at their first-floor eatery on West Rock Avenue (technically 838 Whalley Ave.) across from Edgewood Park..." "NEW URBANISTS" WESTVILLE ZONE PROPOSED
February 13, The New Haven Independent, by Markeshia Ricks- "An assisted living facility would be OK, but not a boarding house. An apartment building could rise four stories and have a first-floor pharmacy - but no convenience store. Boutique hotel? Fine. Motel? Not fine. And never shall there be a drive-through fast food restaurant in the heart of the Village. Those are just some of the rules for how to develop Westville's commercial core contained in a new plan currently before the Board of Alders. The plan is to create a new special zoning district for Westville Village. Drawn up by the City Plan Department, the change would allow Westville Village, currently zoned General Business, or BA, to have its own Village Center Mixed Use designation, or BA-2, zoning district..." February 14, The New Haven Independent, by David Sepulveda- "Exotic masks and costumes seemed in short supply under the shimmering streamers of the annual New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) Mardi Gras fundraiser celebration this year - but not the celebratory fervor that kicked into high gear at the celebration's temporary new location in Westville.
The Fat Tuesday gala fundraiser for the library system was held this year at the Westville Mitchell Branch on Harrison Street rather than, as in the past, the main branch downtown.
A transformed children's section of the Mitchell Branch took on the look and vibe of an open-air food bazaar as a diverse collection of some of New Haven's finest eateries showed why New Haven has become a culinary mecca..." Click HERE to comment and read full article.
February 14, The Arts paper, by Lucy Gellman- "The beads flickered from neck to neck. The brass bands sidled up to shelves of books and played on. The gumbo was still piping hot, and conjured as much good gossip as a crawfish boil. But signs of the main Ives branch of the New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) were nowhere in sight. And for the first time in years, no one expected them to be. Tuesday night, the NHFPL held its annual Mardi Gras celebration and fundraiser at the Mitchell Branch of the library, moving the celebration from downtown for the first time in years. While the tradition was born over a decade ago at the New Haven Lawn Club, it has lived at the main library since 2011, when financial cutbacks pushed it to make the fete an in-house affair with community partners..."

ACTIVE WELLNESS SUCCESS STORY: MAYA LOOKED BEAUTIFUL ON HER WEDDING DAY "My fiancé and I moved to New Haven so that I could start a graduate program in nursing at Yale. I came to Active Wellness because I wanted to continue working out with a personal trainer, something I had started years ago in San Francisco. Staying in shape has always been important to me and I particularly loved the individual attention and tailored workouts that I got from a personal trainer. From the very beginning of my relationship with Active Wellness, I was very focused on what I wanted to achieve in terms of muscle tone, body fat and body weight. It took a lot of mental energy and focus to stay on track with my goals even after major setbacks like my wedding being postponed. After studying at Howard, he spent time in New York City pursuing a career as a stand-up comedian and actor. In the early 1970s, he began to study Eastern mysticism and believed he'd found a new path for his music and his life. It was also at this time he bought his first zither from a local pawn shop. Converting it to an electronic instrument, he began to experiment using the instrument like a piano. By 1978, he developed enough skill to begin busking in the parks and on the sidewalks of New York.
