During the season of Lent, we will engage the Beatitudes, the beginning of Jesus's sermon on the mount in the gospel of Matthew. What are we to do with these words that completely upend our understanding of what it means to be "blessed"? How can this text guide us in our journey through this season of Lent? Join us as we wrestle with and engage these scriptures in a personal way. Amy Starr Redwine's sermon is "The World Turned Upside-Down," and scriptures are Psalms 1 and Matthew 5:1-12. Our lay worship leader is Matthew Garrett. Worship will end a few minutes early this week for those who wish to travel to North Church for worship and a meal, part of our "Going Out" education series (see below).

Music Notes: We welcome the children's choir to our service for the first Sunday in Lent. Our music echoes the theme of the Beatitudes, presented in multiple settings throughout the service. Alternate liturgical responses for the season of Lent replace the customary Gloria Patri and Doxology. In the spirit of reflection, our service concludes with a choral postlude - an early American hymn, Wayfaring Stranger, reminding us of how the Lenten journey towards Holy Week reflects our own spiritual journey through life.
The children will have Sunday School this week. The memory verses for February 18 are:
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart." - Ezekiel 36:26
"O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! You always fulfill your covenant and keep your promises of unfailing love to those who love you and obey your commands." - Daniel 9:4

Lent Adult Education Series: "Going Out"
Every two weeks during Lent, we will engage with a
different Covenant mission partner.
This week, we are "Going Out" to worship with our neighbors at North Presbyterian Church. All are invited to join us immediately following our 10am worship service to carpool. The North Church congregation worships at: Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries building, located at 4515 Superior Avenue, Cleveland OH, 44113.

In the Covenant Family
We pray for Judy Bourne, Andrew Bullen (Melanie Marsh Baum's cousin), Akeya Clark (Marie Jones' niece), Anne Wombwell deConingh, Marlene Finkenthal (David Finkenthal's mother), Eliseo Hairston (Shirley Thompson's grandson deployed to the Pacific),Greg Madison, Mollie Hoar (family friend of Gene and Diane Papp), Elizabeth Mierke, Ward Porch, Sue Salvator,Liam Stewart and Emilee Stewart (Mindy Stewart's nephew and sister), Connie Brand, and Louise Wolfcale. We pray for those struggling with illness, convalescing, or are homebound; the patients, family, and staff in our surrounding hospitals; and those who have placed prayer requests in our Carpenter's Box.
Amy Starr Redwine will be out of the office on vacation from Monday, February 19 through Wednesday, February 21.
Please send prayer requests to Melanie Marsh Baum. Names are generally moved from the bulletin after four weeks unless there is a continuing need. Please let the church know if you or a loved one are in the hospital; HIPAA privacy regulations prevent hospitals from sharing this information.

Lenten Devotionals
 This year we will explore Wondrous Encounters: Scriptures for Lent by Richard Rohr. Rohr's meditations on the daily readings of Lent are not for the sake of mere information, but for the sake of our transformation into our original "image and likeness," which is the very image of God. What always and finally matters for all of us is encounter! Devotionals are available in the church office, the cost is $9 each, which can be paid to Este during her regular office hours, or by putting a check in the offering plate with the memo "Lent Devotional". Also we have a free family-friendly devotional available in the office.

Upcoming Events
Food Pantry Collection and Sunday Artist Concert Series, February 25
Next week during worship, we will collect food and financial donations for the Covenant Food Pantry which is in need of tuna fish, fruit cups, canned chili, beef stew, pasta, spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, pudding snacks and canned vegetables. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Renowned concert organist Dr. Craig Cramer from the University of Notre Dame (Southbend, IN) will play a concert on the Newberry Baroque organ on Sunday, February 25 at 4pm. Admission is free.

Update from Downstairs...creating The Dowd Commons
Your renovation team (Keith Kalley, Marilyn and Chris Langmack, Tom Keys and Martha Goble) is pleased to announce that the renovation is progressing very nicely. The ceiling tile has been ripped out, the columns are in place, everything is out of the kitchen that needs to be out, a new wider doorway has been created, the quarry tile has been removed and the newer space for the refrigerator has been reconfigured so that more light shines through into our beautiful space.
In the narthex you can see pictures of the progress and if you wish, someone from the committee can escort you to the construction area. The needle is moving on the fund-raising thermometer...you can help it move up by making a pledge. Currently we have just over $300,000 with about $90,000 to go. It would be great if all of us can make some kind of contribution to our own Dowd Commons.
