Seminar on Finding Joy:
Edward Dufresne+ will lead a four-session seminar on the topic, "Finding Joy" at St. Brendan the Navigator following worship beginning this Sunday June 18, and continuing August 13, with two additional Sundays
in September/Octoberstill to be determined .
The main text for discussion will be
The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics will include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
Please sign up if you are interested. Sign-up sheets and books for the seminar are available at the church for $23.

in the conference room for all those interested in being actively involved in Pastoral Care at
St. Brendan's.

Outreach Committee Update
The Outreach Committee met on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Members
present were Mickey Jacoba, Richard Paget, The Rev. Stephen Hayward, Julie Pierson, and Skip Greenlaw.
Steve opened the meeting with a prayer thanking GOD for Sidney Peck's successful operation and for healing as she recovers.
Skip recommended that we increase our planned contribution to Camp Kooky from $250.00 to $1000.00 so that more children could have an opportunity to attend camp this summer. Camp Kooky costs $125. per
child per week. All voted in favor.
We continued our discussion about discerning a specific mission for our outreach program. What was it that we might want St. Brendan's to be known for? The discussion focused around education. We listed the activities we sponsored or were involved in which involve education to include:
- Tutoring of adult ed students.
- Scholarships for children to attend Camp Kooky
- Linda Shepard's "Parents Are Leaders" program for early childhood development
- Scholarships for two area high school graduates going to college initiated this year
-Support for Volunteers for Hancock County Jail Residents which includes computers
One person suggested that we might become involved with nutrition programs. What other ideas might members of the church suggest? Does the focus around education seem something which you would encourage
us to continue to discuss? Please share your views with members of the Outreach Committee.
The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 1 PM.

Scripture Notes for Second Sunday After Pentecost:
The three readings today provide us with insight into who we are as the
people of God. The Gospel reading is the account of the calling and
commissioning of the twelve apostles. They are sent forth with the
message of God's Kingdom. Later Jesus will send larger groups to proclaim
the good news and after his resurrection, he sends all of us into the world
to bear the message.
The first reading continues the story of Abraham and Sarah. Many years
have passed; still God's promise to give them a son has not been fulfilled
and Sarah is now too old. However, God comes to them and renews the
promise. Sarah laughed at the idea but in the twenty-first chapter, we
learn the son was born. He was called Isaac, which is Hebrew for "a
laughing matter."
Today's reading from Romans tells us something else about our identity.
We are a people who have been reconciled with God through Jesus' death.
As Paul states in the chapter that follows, we have been incorporated into
that death by baptism and thus our reconciliation with God is complete.
As a people called to proclaim good news, to live lives reconciled to God,
and to be the holy priesthood of the new covenant, we gather to celebrate
the mysteries of that covenant. The Eucharistic meal also reveals us as a people, like Abraham and Sarah who meet God in holy meals and find ourselves called by God into community with God.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses, especially Jan Place, William, Fred, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Sidney, Colin MacNaught, Jim White, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Ingrid Bengis, Mary Adams, Diane, John, Tom, Claudice, Andy Nagle, Paul Burton, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care
for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all
the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also
those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed
conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people,
and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of
Trinity Chapel, Kennebunk Beach and St. Ann's, Kennebunkport. For all students, faculty, administrators and staff as summer vacations begins.
