Cleveland: Come See Jeff Marcell and TIP at IEDC
This year’s IEDC Conference is being held in Cleveland, September 25-28. TIP senior partner, Jeff Marcell will be speaking at the " Boom-Bust-Boom" session on Monday at 1:45pm, where he will share his perspective of Houston’s response to the oil bust of the 1980s and Seattle’s rise after the aerospace downturn in 1971. As part of his session, Jeff will present data examining how deep the economic wounds were at the time and what those communities did to turn things around. In addition to providing historical examples, he will also highlight initiatives currently underway in other communities to stave off potential economic catastrophe.

Two other TIP team members will also be attending the conference. While you are there, make sure to say hello to TIP’s managing director, Jon Roberts and senior consultant, John Karras. We look forward to seeing you!

Cleveland: John Karras also Speaking at IEDC
John Karras, creator of urbanSCALE.com and senior consultant with TIP, will also be speaking at IEDC in Cleveland. He will be one of three speakers in the final concurrent panel session on Wednesday, September 28, at 11 AM. The panel, “ Enticed by Arts and Culture: Driving Foot Traffic to the CBD,” will feature strategies for economic developers aimed at enhancing the economic vitality of downtown districts. John’s contribution will draw on his understanding of trends related to downtown revitalization through a combination of his analytical work at urbanSCALE and qualitative insights gained through TIP consulting projects in urban communities across the US. If you are attending IEDC in Cleveland, please plan to attend this panel discussion. Hope to see you there!

Kansas City: Jon Roberts at The Missouri Governor’s Conference
Outside of our day-to-day consulting work, TIP associates are regularly invited to speak at national and regional events. September has been a busy month for our presenters. Earlier this month, the 58th Annual Missouri Governor’s Conference on Economic Development was held in Kansas City. The three-day conference was focused on innovation and creativity, with a strong emphasis on technology and the arts. Jon Roberts had the honor of providing this year’s closing address. His theme focused on the effects of disruptive technology in transportation, especially the advent of autonomous vehicles. A cameo can be seen in the video recap, which also provides a flavor of the event overall. Visit our blog to read more about Jon’s presentation and the conference.

Dallas: Tom Stellman at the Great States Investment Summit
TIP president and CEO, Tom Stellman, also took the stage this month. On September 12th, Tom participated in the opening panel, “The State of the States,” at the Great States Investment Summit in Dallas. Tom’s discussion explored creative workforce strategies to meet the demand of expanding business. He was joined by moderator Andy Serwer, Editor in Chief of Yahoo Finance, panelists Josh Bays of the Site Selection Group, and Don Pierson, Secretary of Louisiana Economic Development. The event was organized by Conway Events (publishers of Site Selection Magazine) and TeamTexas.

Washington State: Still Delivering On Defense
Seattle Business Magazine recently interviewed TIP senior partner, Jeff Marcell, for their article, “ Still Delivering On Defense in Washington State.” The article highlights the efforts of state and local agencies to diversify the Washington State military and defense sector. TIP is currently wrapping up several projects aimed at mitigating the effects of potential federal defense spending reductions on the state's economy. The work is funded by the Washington Department of Commerce Defense Industry Adjustment program and financially supported by a grant from the US Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment.

Northwest Florida: Regional Strategy for Economic Transformation
TIP has been engaged by the University of West Florida’s Haas Center for Business Research and Economic Development and Florida’s Great Northwest to assist in developing a Regional Strategy for Economic Transformation. This project is being partially funded through an Economic Development Administration (EDA) Economic Adjustment Assistance grant the region received to help it recover from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The affected region includes 13 counties in Northwest Florida, extending west to east from Escambia to Wakulla. The region is seeking to develop a holistic regional strategy for economic transformation emphasizing business growth, job creation, and private investment. Considerable preliminary work has been performed by regional partners. TIP’s role in the planning process began in September and is scheduled to conclude with completion of a final strategy in January.

Delaware: A New Growth Agenda
Last fall, TIP was engaged by the Delaware Business Roundtable (DBRT), a group of more than 50 Delaware CEOs, to craft a strategic framework for pursuing a new long-term approach to economic development in the state. The work was commissioned as a private-sector response to concerns about Delaware’s economy as the state struggles to contend with the dramatic restructuring of traditional industry clusters, increased competition for jobs and investment, and the lasting effects of the Great Recession. The final product, the Delaware Growth Agenda, was released by the DBRT in July. Read more about TIP’s work in Delaware on our blog.
