Summer Kickoff Event Celebrates Music and Art
Arts for Learning San Diego and Horton Plaza Park have partnered to bring music, art, and games to families through their Summer Kickoff event.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 4 at Horton Plaza Park. The day's activities include drumming performance artists Sol e Mar, hands-on art activities led by The New Children's Museum, and lawn games for the entire family.

School Staff Appreciation Days at the Fair
All employees of school districts, charter schools, and colleges within San Diego County showing a valid school employee ID, pay stub, or teaching credential are eligible to receive four $5 admission vouchers from any San Diego Mission Federal Credit Union branch.
The fair admission vouchers are good June 13, 23, and 30.
They are available while supplies last.

Get Fit and Thrive Challenge
By performing easy activities such as reading, finding a healthy recipe, going for a bike ride, or visiting the Kaiser Permanente website for healthy living tips, participants will be entered in a monthly drawing for San Diego Zoo tickets (50 drawn per month). All participants will be entered to win the grand prize of a weekend getaway for a family of four at the Hotel Del Coronado.
To take part in the challenge, students need to
download a challenge card, complete six easy activities, and enter the challenge. Challenge cards will also be available at any Ralphs, Food 4 Less, or YMCA in San Diego County.
The deadline for teachers to submit information from participating students is June 15. Contest ends Sept. 4.

Host a Junior Chargers Training Camp at Your School
Juniors Chargers Training Camps offer an opportunity for students in grades 2 to 8 to be active and have fun outdoors.
The camps take place year-round, and are part of a free, non-contact, football-inspired program designed to teach children the basics of football, exercise, and sportsmanship.

Hone Tech Integration Skills at Free Summer Academy
Educators from the classroom to the district office can learn about best practices in technology integration at a free summer coaching academy at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE).
The Learning Technologies Coaching Collective (CoCo) Summer Academy will take place
from
8 a.m. to noon July 10 and 11 at SDCOE's main campus, 6401 Linda Vista Road in San Diego. Registration closes June 30.
The academy is perfect for instructional technology specialists, teachers on special assignment, instructional coaches, and resource teachers who support technology integration.

efine and market their role as a coach; d
evelop a coaching plan; and d
eepen professional learning.

Teachers Law School Dives into
History-Social Science Framework
The Teachers Law School, presented by the California American Board of Trial Advocates, is an in-depth look at key civics topics addressed in the state's new History-Social Science Framework.
The free event Sept. 18 in Sacramento includes a variety of featured speakers, including sitting judges and law school professors, and reviews topics such as the separation of powers and civility in law and society.
The event is designed for district and school administrators, curriculum professionals, and middle and high school teachers.

MiraCosta College Hosts Latino Book and Family Festival
For the first time, the Latino Book and Family Festival
will be held in North County at MiraCosta College. The national traveling program will feature more than 50 award-winning authors, along with storytelling, activities for children, exhibits, food, and entertainment. There will also be workshops for aspiring authors of all ages as well as workshops on immigration, health, finances, and other topics.
The free event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 12 at MiraCosta College in Oceanside. Parking is free. Informational fliers for the event are available in

21st Annual University of San Diego Character Matters Conference
The Character Matters Conference is taking place June 22 and 23 on the University of San Diego campus. This year's theme is The Essence of Character.
The conference is for all character educators of young people -- teachers from all grades, as well as school administrators and counselors, are encouraged to attend. There will be two keynote speakers, breakout sessions, handouts, book drawings, and networking opportunities.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program
To help students have a summer of reading adventures, Barnes & Noble offers their Summer Reading Program for kids in grades K-6.
Kids who complete and turn in their reading journal at a participating store will receive a free book. For details, click here.
