Celebrate June is Audiobook Month
at your library

The buzz over audiobooks is growing louder each year, so why not grab your headphones and join in the fun with June is Audiobook Month at your library!

One way to celebrate is through SYNC, a free summer eAudiobook program for teens (adults can join, too) that gives away two free downloads a week -- titles paired together based on weekly themes. Once downloaded, the eAudiobooks are yours to keep. SYNC 2017 began on April 27 and ends on Aug. 16.

AudiobookSYNC's eighth week of the 2017 season brings you a pair of eAudiobooks that will entertain, educate, and probably even provoke a wide range of emotions.

The Red Umbrella, by Christina Diaz Gonzalez, is a moving tale of a 14-year-old girl's journey from Cuba to America as part of Operation Pedro Pan -- an organized exodus of more than 14,000 unaccompanied children, whose parents sent them away to escape Fidel Castro's revolution. It's a story of country, culture, family, and the true meaning of home (Description from audiobooksync.com).

Listeners of The Souls of Black Folk  will quickly realize that W.E.B. Du Bois' classic treatise on life in a post-slavery U.S. society still has resonance today. Du Bois examines how black progress was systematically obstructed for two generations after the abolition of slavery. He also discusses the unique and creative ways in which African-Americans must negotiate a system that regularly dehumanizes them and takes their lives (AudioFile review).

Remember to grab these titles before they are replaced by a new pairing on June 22. While the download time is limited, your listening time is not.

SYNC is sponsored by  AudioFile Magazine , powered by OverDrive, and supported by East Central Regional Library. Titles are delivered through the  OverDrive app . If you are not yet an OverDrive user, download the app to your device today and be ready to go! Here's how to get started:
  • Text syncya to 25827 to receive text alerts about all the featured titles.
  • Visit www.audiobooksync.com and sign up for alerts by email.
  • Downloads are in MP3 format and are Mac and Windows compatible. Most listening devices are supported.
  • Each SYNC eAudiobook is available for download for a period of 7 days (only).
  • Titles, once downloaded, are yours to keep. Titles change every Thursday at 6 a.m. throughout the duration of the program.
Book Club Kits available soon for checkout

Beginning next week, Book Club Kits will be available on the shelves at all the ECRL branch libraries for checkout. Book Club Kits contain 12 paperback copies plus discussion guides for popular Book Club reads in a plastic tote box.  Check out a kit and share the copies with your club! Starting on June 19, you can search for and place holds for Book Club Kits in the ECRL catalog, just like any other item format! Book Club Kits can be checked out for 6 weeks.
Libraries closed on Independence Day

All ECRL libraries will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, to observe Independence Day, which commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago on July 4, 1776. The Outreach site in Onamia will also be closed.
Staff Recommendation:
Planet Earth II: a New World Revealed (DVD)

This sequel to the lovely original Planet Earth series provides an engaging, beautifully-filmed glimpse of the modern natural world. Narrated by David Attenborough, the series explores life in island, mountain, jungle, desert, grassland and urban biomes. Planet Earth II is a devastating, inspiring, timely visual journey that is well worth taking
