Letter from Pastor Melissa

Summer Fun Fest on June 4

Kicking off summer with fun!!! On Sunday, June 4, we will Confirm some of our Youth. They started in Feb. taking classes every Sunday to learn about our Christian history, our United Methodist Church and how or to develop their own commitment to God. This means that the promise we made at their baptism, to nurture them in the faith is coming to fulfillment as they accept God as part of their lives, not just because their parents make them. Be present in supporting our Youth on this very special day in their journey of faith.

As part of that day we start a sermon series that focuses on a Sports' Spirituality. Many of us love sports or love a sports fanatic. There is something about sports, the competition, perfecting your sport, and supporting your team that is life giving and inspirational. So this year we are not going to focus only on Baseball. We will explore how Baseball, Basketball, Football inspire us and help us grow in our faith (I wish I could include more sports but there are only so many Sundays).

Sunday, June 4 "Batter Up"

Sunday, June 11 "A Great Team"

Sunday, June 18 Father's Day

Sunday, June 25 "The Draft"

To celebrate the rest of the day we will have our Family Fun Fest that day from 12pm-3pm. Don't miss out on the Fun; Games for the kids, Rock Climbing Wall, Dunking Booth (The Pastor will be In the booth at sometime during the day), and Great Food and its all free!!

Update from Board of Trustees
Trustees Painting Day - July 15th

The area around the patio in front of the Sanctuary is looking a little tired!

In the last Trustees Meeting we proposed to hold a Painting Day! So we would like to invite all members who can wield a paintbrush to join us on our Workday of the 15th of July to come along and help us brighten this crucial area. This area is where new potential members first see and assess our church.
So come along and help us renovate this key area.
We will start early on the 15th and go all day. It doesn't matter if you cannot make it early or stay all day just come when you can and stay as long as you can - we will appreciate any help we can get!

We will be prepping the area and later in the morning actually painting the area. We will pair any beginners with experienced painting buddies.

Let's get this area looking great!

Thanks!

Keith Paul

Happy Father's Day Message
Dad
by Scott Mocha

This morning started innocently enough for my two-year-old son.  When the time came to take him to daycare (which he loves) he threw the biggest tantrum, hitting me with his toys, screaming the entire way to the car and the entire way there.

We arrived, and I extricated him begrudgingly from his car seat.  Suddenly realizing where he was, his screams of terror changed to joy and he ran towards his teacher, arms outstretched. Jackson clearly didn't know I was taking him somewhere better than where he had been before.

I became a follower of Jesus at 32, and in those moments, I cannot help but think that I spent 32 years acting just like him.  I kicked and screamed, and held on to the life that I had lived previously, not knowing that where I was going was so much better.

Being a Dad has given me such awareness of those years, and a glimpse into what God must feel for so many of us making our journey through life.  He's taking us somewhere amazing, somewhere worth going, and doing it with such love.  No matter how much we kick, scream, and fail to believe Him, His love for us never fades and He never lets go.

Small World Preschool Update
If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!

We are clapping our hands together at Small World Preschool to celebrate!

Early in May was Teacher Appreciation Week and the teachers were showered in flowers, gifts, yummy treats and cards from the loving families of Small World Preschool. Mothers were also celebrated this month and the children shared the love for their mother's by giving them wonderful, handmade Mother's Day gifts and cards!! These creations will be enjoyed for many years to come.  Next the children and teachers sang and celebrated the school at Small World Sunday and we really had the chance to clap our hands!  After the service, our fundraiser, "Buck-a-Book" started and many people shopped and picked up piles of books for a few bucks! Thank you for your support at this event as well as at a very successful fundraiser at Hook Burger!!

In June, some children will be leaving to start their summer vacation and moving up to Kindergarten, we wish them well and hope that they come back to visit. The summer also brings a time when new families will be joining us to start their preschool journey.  If you are ready to have a super summer clap your hands!

COSROW

COSROW Retreat

Sign up now to be part of our Women's retreat at Aldersgate Lodge in Pacific Palisades.  We will be joined by Holli Willibey on Friday night.  Holli will spend some time with us as we experience Music for the Soul.  Saturday morning we will share stories about our favorite hymns and songs, then play games with them on Saturday evening.  All women of the church are invited to attend, regardless of age.  Sign the reservation sheet at the COSROW table on Sunday morning to tell us your favorite hymns and songs to be a part of the planning.  Contact Candy Holsenbeck-Smith or Marsha Gilpin for more information

Feeding it Forward

The first and third Tuesdays of every month is our opportunity to share a meal with the homeless.  We take salad, a vegetable, main dish, bread, and dessert for 30 to the homeless shelter.  We also take a gallon of milk and a case of water.  We serve the meal and greet the clients.  They are always grateful and thank us for our gifts.  Look for the Missions/Outreach table on the patio to sign up or contact Candy Holsenbeck Smith, [email protected].

SAVE THE DATE

The COSROW Committee is excited to start planning our annual Fall Boutique that will be held at the church on Sunday, November 12, 2017.

We need your help and hope that all our talented crafters, bakers, and cooks will pitch in to assist with this fun event.  Things that we are looking for at the present time are tin items to make Christmas decorations...random glass, plastic or china plates to be used for the bake sale. We will also be serving a soup and salad lunch for our buyer's to enjoy.

This was a huge success last year and we are hoping this year's Boutique will be even bigger. We have 5 full months, so please keep us in mind for your donations.

Starting in July, we will have a sign up table on the patio each Sunday for you to sign up for what you plan to donate to the Boutique.

If you have any questions, please call Candy Holsenbeck. 661-733-5744 or Sue Wilson, 626-616-6970.

J.A.M. Club

School will soon be out for summer, but don't forget Sunday school each week.

It may seem unfair, but this will be a fun filled summer.  In June, our focus is Courageous Bible People:  June 4 - Courageous Disciples, June 11 - Courageous Queen, June 18 - Courageous Friends, June 25 - Courageous Daniel.    While I realize Summer is a time for relaxation and vacation, I encourage you to spend your morning with us if you are in town.  It is a great way to stay connected.  Our Sunday School teachers will be taking vacation too, please consider being a substitute, it is a great way to experience the joy of our children without a long-term commitment.  Who knows you may even find your calling.

VBS is just around the corner.  I know we have changed the date this year to accommodate other commitments for our staff and volunteers.  Please consider coming out and being a part of a joy filled week.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please talk to Kristi Smith or Jeff Bennett.
