Happy Valentine's Day! Love is in the air, and if there's anything we love as much as our spouses and families, it's reading. It's what binds us as a store -- this love of literature -- and we believe in fostering that love of reading with others, especially young readers. Learning to love books starts early, so this week we are introducing a new section called Bookseller Recommendations For Kids, located just above the New Kids Books. We want to share the books we love, the books that move us, make us laugh, thrill us, and ignite that special spark of imagination that makes us want to place a book in a child's hands and shout, "Read this!" We hope you enjoy this new section -- be sure to visit us for even more great recommendations for your family.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
This gripping novel revolves around a family struggling to survive in the wilderness of Alaska, and the demons lurking in their own lives. Hannah crafts an emotional tale set in the rugged Kenai peninsula -- still unspoiled by tourists in the 1970's -- with characters completely unprepared as they face mental illness, abuse, and tragedy. Stunning descriptions of Alaskan scenery serve as a backdrop for a story that illustrates the beauty and danger found in the state and also in the human spirit.
Love Of Country by Madeleine Bunting
This book is one woman's personal journey through the Hebrides, full of landscapes and history. It's amazing to think that there is such wild under-explored land just off the coast of Scotland. My family is from the Hebrides islands, like the author, and this book makes me want to brush up on my Gaelic and live on a deserted island.
Paul Howarth has set an exceptionally high standard for himself with his first novel. Set during a drought in the 1870s on the frontier of Queensland, in a hardscrabble environment where settlers are taking over the land and pushing natives out, this is a gripping story with an unforgettable cast. Although a mystery lies at its heart, the greatest satisfaction comes from the quality of the storytelling and the development of the characters. A breathtaking debut!
Betty Recommends:
White Houses by Amy Bloom
In this wonderful, evocative novel, we are told of the intimate love affair between Eleanor Roosevelt and Loretta Hickok. With tenderness and a sharp eye, Hick recounts living in the White House and the responsible, yet playful, life of the First Lady. The history alone is worth reading, and the remarkable characters who crowded their lives make this a very satisfying novel. In the end, what stays with us are the feelings two independent women shared, in a much earlier, less accepting time than our own.

Spunky Frankie pitches in by baking cookies for the B&B her father and grandmother run after the death of her mother. In a well-intentioned but misguided attempt to help her family feel complete again, she sets up an online dating profile for her father and inadvertently opens a can of worms she never imagined! Full of humor, wisdom, and impressive insight into the middle grade psyche,
Smart Cookie is, at heart, a story about family.
Have you ever wondered what happens when wishes actually come true? This charming and very funny novel tells the story of the fairies whose job it is to grant wishes to the lucky few who get approved -- especially one particular fairy who faces danger after danger as she struggles on her first mission. Her sidekick Sam, a silly stray dog, is hilarious and the book is a fast-paced comic adventure that is certain to induce fits of giggles and a yearning for true magic.
