Avalon & Stone Harbor Bridge Update
|
|
The Townsend's Inlet Bridge connecting the North end of Avalon & the South end of Sea Isle City was closed on April 3rd after a large crack was discovered in the foundation supporting the bridge. The bridge, built in 1939, will be repaired using 150 foot long pilings! The plan is to complete the required emergency repairs and open the bridge as soon as possible. However, it is very difficult to predict the bridge re-opening date due to variables affecting repair process, including wind, tide, water depth, et al.
The 96th Street Bridge connecting Stone Harbor and the Mainland is currently having major repairs made. The work began on April 25th and the anticipated completion date is June 9th. The majority of the project includes repairs in and around the movable span. Some of the repairs can only be made while the span is in the open position which results in closure of the bridge. Signs will be posted indicating closures and you can also call 609.638.2111 to confirm closures.

Sunday, June 25th Avalon Lions Charities will host the 9th Annual Golf Classic at Avalon Golf Club to benefit the
Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children. Registration will start at 10 am, followed by a full, fun day; lunch, golfing, cocktail reception and ending with an awards dinner. An awesome raffle with chances to win big ticket items! Every golfer who participates will receive a Antiqua Performance Leader Pullover, plus a fabulous Insulated Thermal Golfer Goody Bag!

Avalon Performing Arts Council Annual Art Show

You're Going to Love the Arts... in Avalon
Avalon Performing Arts Council (APAC) was founded in 1982 by Avalon residents at the request of then Mayor Rachel Sloan. The Mayor, along with interested residents, wanted to bring the arts to Avalon. Its mission, to enrich the lives of the citizens of the Borough of Avalon, Cape May County and the visitors to these areas by promoting cultural and artistic events geared to all ages. One of the organization's earlier events was an art show displaying the talents of local artists. Thus began the "annual" Avalon Art Show and Sale in 1987, as we know it today, occurring in June of each year.
The 30th annual art show will be held at the Avalon Elementary School; Preview and Reception to be held on June 23rd; followed on Saturday, June 24th with the art show and sale.
Events added since then have included summer and fall concerts; performances for children and adults; educational programs for school children co-sponsored with the Borough of Avalon. APAC also joins the Borough of Avalon and the Chamber of Commerce to host the Annual Tree Lighting and Holiday Party concert Thanksgiving Friday.
APAC programs help to make Avalon a fun place to live and visit.

In addition to our fundamentals program, which is designed to introduce the game of lacrosse to beginning and intermediate level players, we provide advanced technique and training for experienced players. Black Bear campers will enjoy daily scrimmages, instructional sessions, contests, and daily personal interaction with the coaches. Players of all abilities and experience are welcome. Campers will be grouped according to age and ability. We teach the fundamentals of lacrosse and develop the skills and understanding of the game needed to compete at the next level. The camps are run by top high school coaches in a fun filled, fast paced environment. No matter your skill level when you start the week ... you are sure to leave as a much better player.

Avalon Reveals Plan for Surfside Park
|
The conceptual plan for Avalon's Surfside park, to be located between 29th and 30th Street and the beach, was recently unveiled. The plan includes a complete upgrade of the current facilities at that location including a new play area and playground a picnic pavilion with tables and chairs updated restrooms additional changing and rinsing stations in a stage area to be used for community events. There's also a proposed Family Photo area, to include an Avalon lifeboat and lifeguard stand. The Borough of Avalon submitted an application to receive funding through the Cape May County Open Space Program. The park will potentially be completed in 2018 or 2019. Avalon's Islandman Triathlon

If biking, swimming and running to the finish line is on your bucket list; sign up for the TK Charities Islandman Triathlon on June 24th. This race of endurance and training starts at 7 am at Avalon Community Hall.
If you have kids that want to participate in the fun; have them compete in Islandkids Triathlon. Race set to start at 9:15 am. The Islandkids Triathlon is the largest youth triathlon in the Mid Atlantic region. This safe course focuses on fun, finishing the course and racing for the charity. A great way to get the entire family involved!
