Come Celebrate Alamo's New Bocce Ball Courts
|
 Contra Costa County Supervisor Candace Andersen, the Alamo Municipal Advisory Council, and the Public Works Department are pleased to announce the unveiling of the recently completed Livorna Park Bocce Ball Courts. The new courts were funded through East Bay Regional Park District Measure WW grant funds and will include two bocce lanes, a shade structure, tables, seating and landscaping. The courts are designed for recreational use only and are available on a first come, first served basis with a park permit required for groups of twenty or more.
There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017. The ceremony will take place at Livorna Park, which is located at the corner of Livorna Road and Miranda Avenue in Alamo. Refreshments will be provided.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony stay and enjoy the film "Secret Life of Pets". Showtime is at 8:45 p.m. Bring family, friends, chairs, blankets and flashlights. Great Summer Entertainment - Concerts in the Park

Summer is almost upon us, and with it brings one of my favorite activities to enjoy with friends and family - the Summer Concerts hosted every year by so many of the communities throughout my district. Each has put together a wide range of musical talents for everyone to enjoy, and I thought it would be helpful to list them all in one place.
The concerts are held on different nights of the week, and the live music reflects many genres. The park settings and a picnic dinner are perfect compliments to an evening of music outdoors. It's a great opportunity to showcase your own community or visit a new one! Support local businesses by purchasing a meal "to go" from one of our exceptional restaurants. It's Time to get ready for Wildfire Season
|
A touch of warm weather signals the end of winter rains and the start of wildfire season.
As a homeowner your activities can help prevent wildfires from damaging your home. Your best insurance is to create defensible space.
Your local fire department is starting to inspect properties in the East Bay high wildfire hazard areas. You may even have received a letter listing areas where you are out of compliance with the fire code.
Create defensible space by ....
CLEAR. Clearing dry weeds, dead and dying plants or trees means less fuel for a wildfire.
PRUNE. Pruning trees to remove lower branches prevents a wildfire from climbing into the crowns and spreading fire to your roof.
MOW. Mowing dry grass areas, especially near roads or driveways reduces the chance of ignitions.
REMOVE. Removing combustible materials, leaves and pine needles from roofs and gutters can reduce the spread of wildfire.

Defensible space is the area you create around your home that can slow or stop the spread of wildfire. It can reduce the chance of your home catching on fire either from direct flame contact or radiant heat. It also allows space for firefighters to defend your home.

Logo Winners Announced for Lafayette's
50th Year of Incorporation
|
The Lafayette Partners In Education (LPIE) sponsored a logo contest to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of Lafayette. The contest was open to high school students in Lamorinda. LPIE received nearly 100 logo entries from Acalanes Union High School students in Lafayette. The logos will be used in multiple ways, t-shirts, stickers, banners, posters, mugs, etc.
The public art committee awarded the winner with $50 and the runner up with $25.
The winners were announced on May 22nd at the City Council meeting. Earning the most votes and winning 1st place with the logo pictured above was Sofia Cruz from Acalanes High School, and the runner up was Miles Wiesenthal, also from Acalanes High School. San Ramon Volunteer Day - Parks Make Life Better
|
 Join other volunteers and San Ramon Parks Maintenance staff to help maintain and beautify neighborhood parks. These events are open to all ages, however children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Tasks may include planting, pruning, applying mulch and general clean up. Bring work gloves and wear closed toe shoes. Refreshments provided. Perfect for groups!

Teachers and students from five Danville schools were recently honored by the Rotary Club of Alamo. The annual Educators of the Year and Students of the Year awards were presented during their May 17th meeting at Blackhawk Country Club.
Teachers and students from Alamo Elementary School, Rancho Romero Elementary School, Stone Valley Middle School, Monte Vista High School, and San Ramon Valley High School were represented.

Pictured on the left, the Supervisors honored the County's Emergency Medical Services "EMS" first responders and declared the week of May 15th Emergency Medical Services Week. The year 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the implementation of a paramedic program enhanced EMS System within Contra Costa County. The Contra Costa EMS System is recognized in the state as a leader in providing exceptional performance practices focused on improving patient care outcomes.
On the right, The American Ambulance Association's Stars of Life program celebrated the contributions of ambulance professionals who had gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to their communities or the EMS profession. Stars of Life honored the contributions of these heroes while shining light on the critical role EMS plays in our healthcare infrastructure. The Fire District acknowledged the American Medical Response "AMR" nominees for their service and dedication to the residents of Contra Costa County.

Danville Children's Triathlon
|
Children ages 7-10 are invited to "tri" the sport of triathlon at the Second Annual Danville Children's Triathlon, which will be held on July 29th at Monte Vista High School.
This swim-bike-run event is a great way to introduce children to the sport of triathlon. The majority of participants in the 2016 event were first-time triathletes. In order to keep the focus on safety and fun, the event isn't timed. All participants will receive a finisher's medal and hat.
The race distances for the age groups are:
Ages 7 & 8: Swim four laps (100 yards), bike one mile, run one lap (.25 miles) around the track.
Ages 9 & 10: Swim six laps (150 yards), bike two miles, run two laps (.50 miles) around the track.
An information session is scheduled for July 28th. At the meeting, parents and athletes will hear about the event and be able to ask questions.

AC5 Seeks New Arts Recognition Award
|
The Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County is seeking an artist from Contra Costa County to design and create an original art piece that can be duplicated and used when presenting to Arts Recognition Award winners.
The Arts Recognition Award annually honors individuals and art organizations whose work has had a significant artistic or philanthropic contribution to Contra Costa's Arts and Culture.
REQUIREMENTS:
Original art piece from an artist working or living in Contra Costa County
7-8 inches in height
Mounted onto a 8"x 8" x 2" black stand
Can accommodate a 2" x 4" plaque (AC5 will supply the plaque)
SUBMIT:
- A sketch, drawing or mock-up of your original design
- An estimate of time needed to produce original art piece

San Ramon Valley High School Groundbreaking

Mark Jewett President of San Ramon Valley School Board, Mayor of Danville Renee Morgan, Supervisor Candace Andersen and Danville Town Council member Lisa Blackwell joined together for the groundbreaking
The San Ramon Valley High School Community gathered on Wednesday, May 17th for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the $64 million effort to modernize the century-old campus just outside downtown Danville.
The renovation project is replacing decades-old single-story classrooms with a modern three-story academic building with 52 state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, plus an enlarged quad and additional student parking.
School district officials hope the new classroom building will be completed in time to open for the start of the 2019-20 school year.

13 Reasons Why You Should be Talking to Your Teen
|
The Contra Costa Crisis Center firmly believes that talking about suicide does not cause suicide.
One of the biggest fears heard from adults is that talking with youth about suicide and suicide prevention will "give someone the idea" to complete a suicide. Research has shown time and time again that talking about suicide does not "introduce" the idea to young people. In fact, starting a conversation about suicide and other complex social topics raised in the novel and web television series '13 Reasons Why' can actually bring relief to those who are wrestling with thoughts of suicide and bring the conversation and possible ways to address the underlying issues into the open.
While the center believes that talking openly about the complex issue of suicide and suicide prevention, they caution that the show is not intended for all audiences. As indicated by its TV-MA rating, the content is intended for mature audiences. They encourage parents and caregivers to watch with their teens, and avoid binge watching to allow time for processing the heavy content. Those who are vulnerable, or may be triggered by the content should practice good self-care and avoid watching altogether.
May is also Mental Health Month; another great reason to start a conversation and break down the stigma and shame that can prevent some individuals from getting help.

San Ramon 4th of July Fun Run
|
Looking for a fun way to start the holiday in a healthy and family friendly environment? Then join the City of San Ramon for its annual 4th of July Run San Ramon 10K Run/5K Run and Walk at the San RamonCommunity Center at Central Park. Enjoy the measured, paved and looped course. The 10K course is a double loop of the 5K course. Participants will receive a short sleeve commemorative shirt and goodies provided by sponsors. This will be a chip timed race. The race is open to all ages.
The Mayor's Cup is awarded to the winning preregistered San Ramon resident, male & female (5K & 10K). Trophies will be awarded to the winning male and female of both races and medals will go to the top three in each division, male and female. Mayor's Crown trophy will be awarded to the lowest combined finishing times for the 2016 Bah Humbug Run and 2017 Run San Ramon pre-registered 5k runners (male and female). 5K Run Stroller Division - Overall Male and Female Jogger/Stroller award for the fastest 5K time.
The 10K and 5K Fun Run & Walk starts at 8:00 a.m.
Race day registration tables open from 6:45 - 7:45 a.m.
Cost is $35 if you register by 6/25; starting 6/26 all registrations are $45. Families of 3 or more are $30/person if you register by 6/25.
Packet pick-up will be available for preregistered participants on June 29th at Sports Basement, San Ramon 11:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Receive 20% of any purchase with your race bib. All pre-registrants who wait to pick up their shirt until race day will receive their shirts upon completion of the race on a "first come-first served" basis.

Sunset Development Celebrates City Center Bishop Ranch

Sunset Development's City Center Bishop Ranch brought out the shovels on Tuesday, May 8th, to get started on a 15-acre retail development that will house 60 stores, a one-acre park, cafes and a 10-screen upscale cinema and entertainment center to anchor it.
Once completed, the retail center will join the rest of the 585-acre Bishop Ranch, which includes 10 million square feet of office space, with plans for 478 apartment units, 169 hotel rooms and 50,000 square feet of additional retail in the works.

 Residents who purchase items via online services such as Craigslist will now have a designated neutral 'Exchange Zone' in the upper parking lot of the Danville Town offices to conduct their business. Signage has been installed and the Danville Police Department has designated parking spaces at the Town of Danville offices, 510 La Gonda Way, for residents to conduct transactions in a video-recorded space.
Besides taking place right outside police headquarters, the spaces are under constant video surveillance.

Supervisor Andersen moderated Q&A with renowned economist Christopher Thornberg, founding partner of Beacon Economics, at the annual East Bay Economic Development Spring Membership meeting held on May 11th at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. San Ramon Youth Policy Academy
|
 The San Ramon Police Department's Youth Academy provides youth with
an inside look at local law enforcement. The Academy, which meets daily for two weeks, is designed to inspire good citizenship through criminal justice education. This is a great opportunity for youth who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
During the Academy, students will be introduced to the services that law enforcement provides to our community. Some of the training topics include: Laws in schools, search and seizure, drug and alcohol recognition, crime scene investigation, K-9 demonstration, traffic stops, DUI enforcement, officer use of force, officer safety, community policing, and defensive tactics. All classes are taught by police officers and department personnel in their area of expertise.
The Academy will be held June 19-22, 2017 and June 26-29, 2017. Applications are now being accepted.
There is no charge to participate in the Youth Academy.
The Academy is offered to 8th-12th grade students who reside or attend a school in San Ramon and have not previously attended the Youth Academy. Students must not have any felony convictions and no misdemeanor arrests within two years.
The Chief of Police or his designee will make final selection.
