Can You Hear Me Now?!
There's a coaster sitting on top of my music cabinet that reads,
Sing like there's nobody listening. It's from a quote by William W. Purkey and I imagine you've all heard or seen it. It makes me smile each time I sit down at my grand piano to vocalize or sing through a new piece of music. As Christians and church musicians, shouldn't we take an opposite point of view? Through our baptism, we have been anointed to bring good news, God's Word, to all. When we sing the Word of God, with our voices, with instruments playing, we proclaim good news for
all to hear.
In this year of commemorating the 500
th anniversary of the Reformation, we remember Jesus' words, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free." It is our calling and privilege to continue in the word through our music--whether it helps soothe those in need or pain, or whether it helps lift us all to a higher level of celebrating the love of God.
As I write this piece, it's getting close to Trinity Sunday--a time to think in 3's. Our ALCM colleague, Wayne Wold suggests we think of three "P" words: ponder, praise, and proclaim (
Soli Deo Gloria, Choir Devotions for Year C). As ministers of music, we ponder the words in the texts for worship as we consider choices of appropriate music each week. We ponder the wonder of our God and then offer our praise through hymns and various creative musical offerings. We proclaim God's love to all by sharing that love through our music.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the ALCM Conference in Minneapolis where we will gather to ponder, praise and proclaim. Let's sing like everyone is listening!

Sabbatical Giveaways - Did you see the announcement in the conference email that went out last week? LutheranArts has secured funding for five week-long sabbatical retreats worth $1,500 each to be given away during our conference--what a fabulous gift! We'll be drawing names of registrants all during the conference.
Hotel - If you have not yet made your hotel reservations, please do it today! There is a LOT going on in downtown Minneapolis that week, and there are a limited number of hotel rooms available. If you attempt to make an online reservation and include a day in which our block of rooms is sold out, you will be told that there are no rooms available. If that happens, please notify the office immediately: [email protected] or 800-624-2526. We can then see about adding more rooms to our block. Remember, reservations must be made by June 11.
If you are already registered for the conference and want to share a room, look for an email on Monday with instructions for signing up.

Election Results
Thanks to all who voted in the recent national election for president-elect and director at large. It was a close race, but the results are in: Kevin Barger was elected to become the new ALCM president and Mike Krentz was re-elected as director at large. Both officers will begin their new terms at the national conference this summer. Kevin will serve for two years as president-elect, three years as president, and then one year as past-president. Mike was re-elected for a two-year term. Because Kevin has been serving as secretary/treasurer, in the time leading up to the conference the board will be discussing how best to fill the position of secretary/treasurer for the remainder of Kevin's term.
As Kevin begins his new position at the Minneapolis conference, the board will bid farewell to Anne Krentz Organ, who is completing her six-year term. Anne was a wonderful president and the board thrived under her leadership. Thank you, Anne, for the many ways you have served ALCM. You will be missed on the board!

Throughout 2018, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians is inviting musicians to gather in small groups at local congregations for practical workshops on specific topics led by a skilled practitioner. These workshops are for musicians in congregations of all sizes and contexts, each with their own challenges and opportunities. Details for an event near you and across the continent will be available by mid-autumn. If you have a proposal for a possible site, local coordinator, presenter or topic, please send your thoughts to Scott Weidler at [email protected].
Please note that a larger 4/5-day event focusing on the leadership of congregational song in many musical styles is also being planned. Stay tuned for details.

Reformation Planning for ALCM Members
The issue of In Tempo that will be arriving later in June includes many ideas and tips for this year's Reformation commemoration. As you plan for this major event, don't forget to include the hymn commissioned by ALCM, "God Alone Be Praised." In addition to the two versions of the hymn, the following additional resources are available for use by ALCM members:
- Organ chorale prelude (easy and moderate versions) - Kevin Hildebrand
- Handbell stand-alone piece and hymn accompaniment - John Behnke
- Choral concertatos for both versions - Zeb Highben
- Piano stand-alone piece and hymn accompaniment- John Helgen

Orgues Létourneau is offering a 30-stop pipe organ rebuilt to like-new condition for USD$550,000. The core will be Casavant's Opus 1274 from 1928 with electro-pneumatic wind chests; the revised specification can incorporate up to five new stops built by Létourneau. Installation costs, on-site voicing, an allowance for casework in red oak, a rebuilt two-manual solid-state console, and a ten-year warranty are included. Transportation from Québec is not included. This summer, join hundreds of other church musicians in exploring fresh and innovative ways to enliven music in worship. Summer Music Clinics are designed for everyone involved in creating and planning music for worship.
