Sidewalk CPR Day
Thursday, June 1, 2017

The South Pasadena Fire Department will provide free hands-only CPR training on Sidewalk CPR Day this Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the South Pasadena Fire Station, 817 Mound Avenue, one of over 90 sites across Los Angeles County. Last year, more than 17,000 people in Southern California learned how to save a life in just five minutes with a quick lesson from local firefighters and medical professionals.

Learning hands-only CPR helps local emergency responders by focusing on the first few critical minutes following a cardiac arrest. Since the lungs and blood contain only enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for that amount of time bystanders become heroes until emergency responders arrive on scene. With each chest compression using hands-only CPR, ordinary citizens can easily provide the ongoing blood flow needed to give the patient a much better chance of survival once responders arrive.

Summer Reading Program Banner - _Reading by Design_ in orange on a blue background_ with pictures of robots around the text.
Beginning Monday, June 5, children and teens are invited to join the South Pasadena  Public Library's 2017 Summer Reading Program "Reading by Design." To sign up, children and teens may visit the Children's Room at the Library or click here.

FREE Mulch & Compost Giveaway Event
Saturday, June 10, 2017
Photo of a man and son scooping mulch into a container.
The City of South Pasadena will be hosting a FREE mulch and compost giveaway event on Saturday, June 10th from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the School District parking lot - 1020 El Centro Street. South Pasadena residents are welcome to scoop up to a maximum of 100 gallons of compost or mulch at no charge. Residents must bring their own sturdy containers, but shovels will be provided for everyone's use.

Giveaway will be on a first come, first served basis. For more information visit the City's website  or contact Jenna Shimmin at 626-403-7311 or jshimmin@southpasadenaca.gov .

Mulch vs. Compost
Mulch (donated by LandCare) is chipped tree trimmings or bark chips which serve as a protective cover for your soil. It reduces evaporation, reduces weeds and is an attractive addition to your landscape. Mulch should be laid 3" to 4" thick to be most effective.

Compost (donated by Athens) consists of yard trimmings and/or food waste which breaks down to a fine dark matter over time. Compost should be added into the soil to provide essential nutrients to your plants via their roots.

 Garfield Reservoir Replacement Project
The City of South Pasadena is nearing completion on the replacement of Garfield Reservoir. This $18,000,000 project is being constructed by Pacific Hydrotech Corporation and will consist of replacing the existing reservoir which was constructed in 1924.

When completed, this project will consist of a new reservoir with a holding capacity of 6.5 million gallons of potable water, including a state of the art pump station along with an adjoining building which will house the City's Water Operations Division.   Currently, the construction of the reservoir is complete and the reservoir is being filled. The Water Division headquarters is still under construction, with estimated completion in Summer 2017.

This project is funded through the City's Water Bond Fund.    Should you have any additional questions regarding this water improvement project, click here or contact the City's Public Works Department at (626) 403-7240.
Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement is Nearing Completion
After more than a full year of work, the second phase of the City's Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project is nearing completion. As part of a city-wide initiative to replace aging sewer lines, the Public Works Department contracted with several companies to rehabilitate approximately 60% of the City's sewer system by the close of Summer 2017. By utilizing Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) technology, the life of 272 sewer pipes segments, totaling approximately 83,600 lineal feet,  have been extended for another fifty years.

In order to improve the effectiveness of this project, the Public Works Department would once again like to remind residents to ensure that their private sewer laterals are in good condition. Specifically, by hiring a professional to ensure each homes lateral is free of roots, grease, and other debris.  For more information on the project itself click here , or contact South Pasadena's Public Works Department at (626) 403-7240.
New Parking Restrictions on Stoney Drive to Begin June 2017
_No Parking_ Symbol - The letter _P_ with a red line striking through it.
In June 2017, the City of South Pasadena will begin implementing and enforcing "No Stopping Any Time" parking restrictions on Stoney Drive from Arroyo Drive to 450 feet north of State Route 110 bridge. At their April 12 meeting, the Public Works Commission reviewed the matter and recommended consideration to the City Council, who approved the parking restrictions at their May 3, 2017 Council meeting.

Stoney Drive is a narrow two-way roadway that provides access to various public facilities. In order to maintain safe and orderly traffic flow on Stoney Drive, "No Stopping Any Time" parking signs will be posted to inform motorists regarding the new parking restrictions. Public off-street parking is available at all City facility locations. The City anticipates the signs and parking restrictions to be in place and enforced by the end of June, 2017.

LeeAndra Chergey, writer of the instructive memoir, "Make a Wish for Me: A Family's Recovery from Autism" will appear for an Author Night speaking appearance on Thursday, June 22 at 7:00 pm. in the Library Community Room, 1115 El Centro Street. The free program is presented by the South Pasadena Public Library, the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, Kiwanis Club of South Pasadena, and The Institute for the Redesign of Learning, popularly known in the community as the Almansor Center.

Spread the Word to Conserve at the South Pasadena Demonstration Garden
Picture of the South Pasadena Demonstration Garden
The newly constructed Demonstration Garden is now open! Located at 1028 Magnolia Street, right next to the Community Garden, the Demonstration Garden provides an opportunity for the community to learn ways to conserve energy and water, and have an attractive landscape that is cost effective.

The community is welcome to visit and learn about options for irrigation that can conserve water, and get educated on plants that are native and water wise. The Demonstration Garden has a variety of California natives along with drought tolerant plants and trees that are available locally, and aesthetically attractive. The garden also has a dry creek bed that shows how we can slow down and capture water run-off before it makes it to the street, allowing it to percolate into the ground to promote water recharge. As a leader among the nation for conservation, the use of solar energy is utilized to power the irrigation system. The irrigation is critical in sustaining a drought-tolerant garden by use of a low-volume drip line and bubblers.

The Demonstration Garden includes amenities such as a gazebo, seating bench, drinking fountain, bulletin board with conservation and gardening information, doggy waste station, bench, trash receptacle and two bike racks. The seed library contains seed packets for residents to try for themselves in their own homes, along with books that you can take.

This project was funded by Park Impact Fees and the Water Conservation Fund.
