Billy Jonas Band at Summer Reading Kick-Off
Billy Jonas Band
On Saturday, June 3rd, Dan Nicholas Park hosts Rowan Public Library's Summer Reading Kick-off. The event includes a festival, held in the Sports Field from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm., and a concert featuring the Billy Jonas Band, held in the Stanback Outdoor Theatre beginning at 1:30 pm. Both festival and concert are free, open to the public, and all ages are welcome.

The festival also features a children's craft activity and numerous vendors. Rowan County Cooperative Extension Service, Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department, Rowan County Animal Services, Chickweed, Habitat for Humanity, Sole Hope, and more will have booths at the celebration. Touch a Butterfly will be available for children to observe and feed live Monarch Butterflies, while learning about the butterflies' anatomy.

A bicycle rodeo, hosted by The Pedal Factory, is also on the agenda. People should bring their bikes to participate. The Pedal Factory staff will help with small adjustments if needed before participants go through the obstacle course.

The first 500 attendees receive free ice cream sandwiches, courtesy of Food Lion #381 of Rockwell. Other food items may be purchased from Dan Nicholas Park's concession stands, or participants may bring a picnic. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the park's amenities while on site.

The grand finale of the Summer Reading Kick-off is a performance by the Billy Jonas Band. The band, which performed at the 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll, is known for its brand of industrial re-percussion, which involves making instruments from found, foraged, and recyclable objects.

With their "funky folk music," as Jonas describes it, the Billy Jonas Band seeks to create community through music and song. "My favorite instrument is the audience," Jonas says, when discussing how they encourage listeners to join in the performance.

A summer reading registration booth will be available throughout the festival, and individuals of all ages can sign up. There are no fees required to participate in summer reading. The 2017 theme, "Build a Better World," encourages people to actively seek knowledge and to explore new ways of using that knowledge to make a positive difference in the world.

Summer reading categories are organized by age: Children (newborns to rising fifth-graders), Teen (rising sixth-graders to rising twelfth-graders), and Adult (all individuals over 18 years of age).

Build a Better World with RPL this summer
Children's Summer Reading  is designed to include children from birth to rising 5th graders.  Children who haven't yet learned to read can still participate with their parents' help, and several of the activities are designed for non-readers.

Children's reading hours may be tracked June 12th through Aug. 7th.  Prizes are awarded when children complete various activities on their summer activity logs.  Children who complete 20 activities will receive a special certificate and be entered in the Super Reader Raffle held Aug. 10th.

Weekly children's programs begin June 12th and run through July 28th. These programs, designed for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, are highly interactive programs run by RPL children's staff.

The school-aged children's programs, geared for Kindergarteners through rising 5th graders, feature professional performers.  The performer line-up is varied and ranges from science-oriented demonstrations to mini-theatre productions.  June 12th-16th, Mad Science sparks imagination and curiosity in children with fun and interactive science experiments. Then, June 19th-23rd, Down to Earth Aerials defy gravity and explain the physics involved to perform acrobatic movement and aerial skills.

The Piedmont Players bring theatre to life June 26th-30th. Ro & Mo-Stories come to life when Mr. Robert and Mary Ann perform live-action stories July 3rd-7th, and Dan Nicholas Wildlife brings the wonder of animals and nature to children July 10th-14th. The pirate Captain Jim offers a treasure-filled program July 17th-21st, and the stage is set for Lee Street Theatre's annual summer reading productions July 24th-28th.

Door prizes are raffled off weekly at the school-aged children's events; to enter the raffles, children must write and submit a "Reader Book Review" before the day's program begins. "Reader Book Review" forms are available in the Children's Department of each RPL branch. RPL staff will review instructions for completing and submitting the form at each scheduled event.

This summer, family programs will again be offered at Cleveland Town Hall, located at 302 E. Main St. in Cleveland. Patrons frequenting the Cleveland site can report their reading hours during those programs. For details, contact the Children's Department at RPL Headquarters at 704-216-8234.

RPL also offers special summer reading programs for camps and daycares; however, those events are by reservation only.  Call 704-216-8229 for more information.

Teen's Summer Reading is designed for rising 6th through 12th graders.

From June 12th through July 28th, teens can participate in events that "Build a Better World." After registering for summer reading, teens receive booklets to keep track of points earned by reading, attending teen library programs, and completing activity challenges.  These points can be used to earn raffle tickets for prizes; drawings for the prizes will take place at the end-of-summer teen lock-in.

The Teen programs kick off June 12th-15th with "Welcome to the Team." Since the summer is all about teamwork, on that day, teens will meet with their groups and get to know them by playing high-energy games. June 19th-22nd, teams compete in an international treasure hunt and complete exciting challenges on the "Amazing Race Scavenger Hunt." Then, June 26th-29th, "Water Balloon Catapults" lets teens build catapults, play water games, and have a water balloon war.

Brittany Gaddis presents "Coloring with my Community" July 3rd-6th, and teens are invited to learn about art and its impact on others through hands-on demonstration. July 10th-13th, teens are "Building a Better Bridge," using their best architectural skills and working together to complete the bridge and tower challenge.

July 17th-20th brings "Mini MUNs (Model United Nations)" as the world finds itself under attack from a zombie pandemic - the mission is to become an expert on the deadly zombie virus and find a way to stop the next outbreak!

After saving the world, July 24th-27th, "Quiz Bowl" lets teens show off their smarts and score big for their team in a fast-paced game show that features topics like history, geography, art, and architecture.

The Teen's Summer Reading Program culminates with the annual National Teen Lock-in, which will be held on Friday, July 28th, from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm at RPL Headquarters (Salisbury). A permission slip signed by a parent or guardian is required for teens to participate in this event.

Learn About Upcoming Friends Trips at Informational Program

On Wednesday, June 7th at 7:00 p.m. at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury, Jeremy Kincheloe, a Collette representative, shares sights, sounds, and essential information about two upcoming Friends of RPL trips.

The San Antonio Holiday (December 9-13, 2018) highlights include a tour of San Antonio and the Alamo; a cruise on the Paseo del Rio and the festive holiday decorations along the River Walk; a visit to the German settlement of Fredericksburg with its Christmas celebrations and decorations; and a tour of an olive orchard with an olive oil and wine tasting.
Iceland's Magical Northern Lights (January 23-29, 2018) features a Northern Lights Cruise, a glacial lagoon, Icelandic cuisine, and the chance to experience geothermal fields.  Fun fact: Did you know the average high temperature in Iceland in January is one degree higher than the average high temperature in January in Blowing Rock, NC? It's not as cold as you might think!
