Talk about transitions! On May 8, I graduated from Prescott College with a BA in Human Development. My higher education journey started 30 years ago. A wishy-washy student in high school, I did not have guidance or ambition for college. I moved out on my own at 19, and began supporting myself financially. I tried different colleges and classes on for size, but found it very difficult to balance work and school. It was 20 years later, a marriage, moves from Southern California to Santa Fe, Denver, Chicago, back to Santa Fe, and three children later, that I had the desire to go back to school. My work experience was mostly in healthcare. I had knowledge of medical terminology and procedures, and taking the nursing track was logical. I enrolled at Santa Fe Community College in 2009, got my pre-requisites for the nursing program, including Certified Nursing Assistant licensure, and then applied for the program. After many months, I realized that allopathic medicine was not something I was passionate about. I began searching for the major that would enthuse me. I tried alternative medicine at NNMC, psychology at SFCC, speech therapy at UNM, and then landed at Prescott College. Several bumps in the road included a major surgery, the separation of my marriage (back together), and the loss of both my parents, but they were temporary setbacks and proved no match for the tenacity and perseverance I had within me. When I applied myself as an adult learner, I actually maintained a 4.0 GPA. In fall, I begin my graduate studies in Organizational Development at Fielding University. We all have paths, some with forks or bumps, some we have no idea of the outcome. Somehow, we keep moving forward, transitioning.

This year we will enjoy our feast in Rachel Greenstein's spacious backyard! Her home is located near Old Pecos Trail south of East Zia.
This year's picnic will be a potluck. Bring your own beverage and a dish to share. Rachel's kitchen will be available for keeping things hot and cold!

BUILDING CAMARADERIE
- AS WELL AS WALLS!
Three TTN members participated in this year's Habitat for Humanity Women Build Week which is always held in May. Sue Benedict, Lynn Frimond and I met at 8:30 at the Oshara build site on Willow Back Road. There was a female crew leader, young volunteers from Americorp, staffers from Tom Udall's office and other women who had always wanted to help with construction, about fifteen of us. We were given our work belts and T-shirts and then we toured a house that was almost completed. The families who buy the houses receive no-interest loans and they have to volunteer time on the construction.
I didn't grow up in a family that built things so it was fascinating to me to learn how a house is assembled. The boards we used to build the wall frames had all been measured, labeled and laid out ahead of time. Xes marked the spots where we were to lay the cross boards and nail them in. Some of the women could drive in a long nail in four strokes and some of us had to hit the nail twenty times but we were cheered on whether we were handy or not. After we nailed together the wall frames, we stood them up and laid them onto the posts that dotted the edges of the floor.
During our hearty lunch, I learned that the Americorp volunteers are paid $5.50 an hour so that they'll experience living below the poverty level. After their ten-months' service, they receive a stipend to use for education.
I was impressed with how well organized the process was and how supportive everyone was. The camaraderie was exceptional and I hope more members participate next year.

On May 17th , Jean Palmer's living room was transformed into a bit of a concert hall with melodies rivaling the best of the songbirds nesting on her portale!
Fifteen TTN members and their guests arrived eager to make music with their instruments and/or their vocal cords. The group was first treated to classical and folk music performances by a pianist (Jean Palmer), an oboeist (Pat Kushlis), two flutists (modern - Ginnie Asman and Native-American - Kristine Baker), a guitarist (Joanne Davis Jankowitz) and a vocalist singing in Spanish (Elia Redfield).
Music of the Fifties was next on the program as everyone joined in reminiscing good times of the past by singing such favorites as Mr. Sandman, Unforgettable and Seventy-Six Trombones accompanied by piano and all kinds of percussive instruments!
We will be expressing ourselves through music once again on June 22! See the listing on the right for our next musical party and join us! No auditions required!!
