This year, as we celebrate Trinity Sunday on June 11th, we will also enjoy music and scripture from Music & Arts Camp by our children.  Then, directly following our single service at 11:00, the Food Ministry is hosting a Church-wide Luncheon Tea.  All are invited!  More information about Trinity Sunday, Music & Arts Camp, and the Luncheon Tea are below.
***
On Trinity Sunday,  we proclaim the mystery of our faith in the triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One-in-Three and Three-in-One.

The celebration of Trinity Sunday began among Western Christians in the 10th century and developed slowly until it was formally established on the Sunday after Pentecost by Pope John XXII (1316-1334).

***
Unlike other festivals in the church's liturgical calendar, Trinity Sunday centers on a doctrine of the church, rather than an event. It celebrates the unfathomable mystery of God's being as Holy Trinity. It is a day of adoration and praise of the one, eternal, incomprehensible God.
Trinity Sunday, in a sense, synthesizes all we have celebrated over the past months which have centered on God's mighty acts: Christmas-Epiphany celebrating God's taking flesh and dwelling among us in Jesus Christ; Easter celebrating Christ's death and resurrection for us; Pentecost celebrating God the Holy Spirit becoming our Sanctifier, Guide, and Teacher. It is, therefore, a fitting transition to that part of the year when Sunday by Sunday the work of God among us is unfolded in a more general way.
The triune God is the basis of all we are and do as Christians. In the name of this triune God we are baptized. As the baptized ones we bear the name of the triune God in our being. We are of the family of the triune God. We affirm this parentage when, in reciting the creeds, we say what we believe. Our discipleship is rooted in the mighty acts of this triune God who is active in redeeming the world. The triune God is the basis of all our prayers - we pray to God the Father, through Jesus Christ, by the Holy Spirit. The Trinity holds central place in our faith. ...
In celebrating Trinity Sunday, remember that every Lord's Day is consecrated to the triune God. On the first day of the week, God began creation. On the first day of the week, God raised Jesus from the grave. On the first day of the week, the Holy Spirit descended on the newly born church. Every Sunday is special. Every Sunday is a day of the Holy Trinity.

The Giving Tree is up and it is beautiful!
Now we need you to visit it in the Assembly room!

Here's how it works...

Step 1:
Select a leaf or a heart with a number that has significance to you AND donate that amount of money.

Each family is encouraged to select a number.

Step 2:

Write the reason for selecting that number on the blank side of the leaf/heart and hang it back on the GIVING TREE in its original place...with your words FACING OUT to inspire others to give creatively.

Step 3:

Make a check for the amount on the card, check payable to First Presbyterian Church with Giving Tree written in memo line, place the check (or cash) in the provided envelope.

Drop the envelope in the Sunday offering plate, in Kelly Abraham's office mailbox, OR mail envelope to FPC, 171 Market St, Lexington KY 40507.

IDEAS FOR SELECTING YOUR NUMBER:

  • Your age (or your mother's age or pet's age...)
  • Sum of your kids' ages
  • Anniversary date/Birthday
  • Years you've been a member at First Presbyterian Church
  • Highest number you can afford!
  • Number of FPC ministers you can remember (TIMES 10...)
  • Your lucky/favorite number
  • Numbers of years you have been married
BOTTOM LINE: GET CREATIVE - SUPPORT THE YOUTH MISSIONS FUND

A huge thank you to Kelly Brewer for her gifts of time and talents in drawing and painting the beautiful Giving Tree!

On the Day of Pentecost we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit descending in a mighty rush of wind and flame to inspire the church's proclamation of Christ's rising and to empower its mission and ministry to the world. (See Acts 2.1-13; see also Joel 2.28-32.)
***
According to the Day of Pentecost story in Acts 2.1-13, God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower witnesses to the resurrection. Sounds from heaven, cosmic language, the rush of a mighty ruach (wind, spirit, breath) invaded the house in which the apostles gathered, and appeared to them as a burning fire. Tongues of fire touched their nerve centers. A power - the unseen power of God - moved among them and gripped them. The Holy Spirit is unseen, like the wind, which is why the Old Testament calls it ruachYHWH, "the wind, or breath, of God" (cf. John 3.8). The Spirit is the "unseenness of God" working among us.
According to Joel (2.28-29) the ruach is to open everybody to God's future. People young and old will dream and will have visions of hope; they will be able to loose themselves from the way things are now, because God is establishing a whole new economy of creation. The Holy Spirit breaks us out of our preoccupation with ourselves and frees us to serve neighbors, loosens our grasp on possessions, and sets us to loving people. New creation is what Joel is talking about. Pentecost is new creation.
The book of Acts tells the story of the outcome of Pentecost's new creation: people witness in word and in deed to the risen Christ. At the outset, the newborn church immediately tumbled out into the streets to witness to God's mighty works in the languages of people all over the world. By the end of the story, a tiny, Spirit-filled community of faith that broke from its present order has spread across the continents with incredible power to bring new things into being. With the gift of the Spirit, all things are possible. ...
Therefore, on the Day of Pentecost, we celebrate God's gift of Holy Spirit which draws us together as one people, helps us to comprehend what God is doing in the world, and empowers us to proclaim, in word and in deed, God's plan of reconciling all people in the name of Christ (Ephesians 1.10).
Without the gift of the Spirit, Christ's church dries up and withers away, and we are left with only our broken selves. With the gift of the Spirit, all things are possible. A spirit-filled community of faith opens eyes to needs in the world and sees its missing as God's new people. The Day of Pentecost is the climax of the Great Fifty Days of Easter, celebrating as it does the gift of the Spirit to the body of Christ - the church.

HOW IS MY GIFT USED?

A gift to the Pentecost Offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community.   Our local organization is the Central Music Academy (www.centralmusicacademy.org).

The remaining 60% is used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency:
  • Young Adult Volunteers
  • Ministries for Youth
  • Children-at-Risk
  • Pentecost Offering Financials
Thank You, FPC!

My family and I would like to express our profound gratitude to the congregation of First Presbyterian Church for the care and support you have offered us following my hospitalization with a staph infection. From sitting with me in the hospital to give Rebecca a break, to bringing meals, to a mailbox filled with cards, to texts and phone calls to check in, and - above all - your prayers, we have felt so loved, cared for and grateful to be part of the FPC family. I still have a long road ahead to full recovery following 3 knee surgeries in 10 weeks and the infection, but I am truly thankful to have you all on the journey.

Mark Your Calendars...
 Born Learning Dates for 2017!

Our Born Learning partnership with Arlington Elementary in the fall of 2016 was a great success.  Volunteers worked with over 25 families on six different evenings in September, October, and November.

This year, FPC will again partner with Arlington to provide dinner and also assist Arlington teachers in working with the children while their parents are in class. Volunteers are needed for Shift I and Shift II.  Shift I sets the tables, eats with our guests, cleans up, and should plan to arrive around 4:45.  Shift II, arriving around 5:30, eats with the guests and assists the Arlington teachers with the children's portion of the program.

The dates for the program this fall are the following Tuesdays:

September 12th, 19th, and 26th
October 3rd, 10th and 17th

If you are interested in volunteering with us this fall, please email Susan Keegan at [email protected] or call her at (859) 221-0933. Pam McGee is also available at [email protected] or (859) 227-2598 to answer any questions.  It is not necessary to commit to all of the dates, especially as they are every week.  Any time you are able to give is welcomed.

We tru ly appreciate the continued enthusiasm with which the congregation embraces this important partnership.  Please do not hesitate to contact a Cornerstone Commission Member for more information.

Lent - hospitality in the shadows of Sin, and
Easter - hospitality in light of the New Creation.

All are invited to join the discussion of what it might mean to become more hospitable in the spaces in which we live our lives.
We hope you will join us.

The Lord's Supper

The pattern of the early church was to gather for worship and a meal. The "offering" of bread brought for the meal also included food given to the needy.  For John Calvin, the Word is brought most fully to life when pulpit and table are unified in worship, an understanding that has for many years guided the liturgical practice of our 8:45 am service of worship.

As we consider the relationship between pulpit and table in our 11:00 am services, communion will be served beginning in Advent on November 27th through the celebration of the "Trinity Sunday" on June 11, 2017. This decision of the Discipleship Commission of the Session, is an outgrowth the work of several former committees that had long and meaningful discussions about what First Presbyterian should consider for the current church year and the reflections of Discipleship Commission.

During these weeks, we invite you to think more deeply about the relationship between pulpit and table.  Books that may be of particular interest in your reflections are:  Pulpit and Table by Howard Hageman andCome and See:  Presbyterian Congregations Celebrating Weekly Communion by Ronald P. Byars and John D. Witvliet.
