How to Tell if Your Dog is Overheating
We're all excited about the upcoming summer season - what's not to love? Vacations and road trips, burgers and barbecue, sunglasses and flip-flops...
BUT
-
summer isn't always just a walk in the park for pets.
Skyrocketing temperatures can make the world a harsh place for our animals, especially for dogs, who can be very sensitive to the heat.
Watch out for:
- Heavy panting.
- Dry or pale gums.
- Increased drooling.
- Deep and rapid breathing.
Prevent these early signs of overheating from even happening by:
- Being careful not to overexert your dog when enjoying the day.
- Making sure your dog has a shady spot where he can rest.
- Having a lot of drinking water handy if your dog shows any of the above signs of overheating or overexertion.
- Putting cloths soaked in cold water around his paws, in his armpits and on his head and neck.
If you think your dog is in danger of overheating, it is always good to go to the vet.
If your dog loses consciousness, hurry to the animal hospital ASAP.
Everyone wants to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. And with some preparation, you and your dog can have a great time this summer!

I got my first dog I've ever owned a few years back. He is now 5 years old and he's a chihuahua / pug mix. I got him from the mall as a puppy and I paid way too much! Over time I thought he was lonely, so I wanted to get another dog. I thought he needed a friend ,and I felt bad when I was at work during the day.
I starting doggysitting for my friend and he had two Bostons... I was immediately hooked! I knew I wanted a Boston but I didn't want to start over with puppy training. My mom suggested I look into a rescue. Ironically when I Googled it, the first organization that came up was MABTR! I looked through the adoptable dogs, and Tucker was the first dog I set eyes on. I researched further and filled out an application. I was contacted quickly and then someone came out to interview me and see my home.
Within days I was in touch with the foster mom and we set up a time for me to go to her home. I asked if I could bring my dog Charlie with me to introduce them.
I fell in love with Tucker immediately. He was so wonderful and sweet and I didn't want to leave the foster home without him.
I knew he was a perfect fit for our family, and he has been a wonderful friend and member of our family. In fact, everyone who meets him always tells me what a gentleman he is, and I've had a few friends tell me they want a dog just like him! They know him by name at the vet and at the groomers. He loves to lick, and he definitely has his own section of our bed.
I will always adopt and I strongly encourage people to adopt. He was already fixed and potty trained, and he has been great to our kids and any other dogs he comes in contact with. I still keep in touch to this day with his original foster parents and send them pictures of my sweet boy.
Thank you MABTR!!! --
Kris

Adoptable Dog of the Month
My name is
Buddy
.
I am 12 years old and weigh 33 pounds. I need
a new home because my owner has fallen ill and no longer a
ble to care for me. I am being fostered in Kansas City, KS.
I am blind in the one eye I have; however, that does not impact me at all! I have been
blind for a few years now and adjust well in all new environments I am introduced to.
I do REQUIRE a HOME with NO OTHER DOGS. I am fine with cats though!
I am just a snuggle Buddy (get it?). I love to sit with you on the couch, burrow in some blankets and pillows, and take a snooze while you watch TV or play video games. I might not like to sit on your lap, but that is only because I want to sit right next to you. I do not see very well, but am very good at learning my surroundings. Stairs are hard, but I have a trick for learning steps and getting in and out of a house. I like to go for walks - just not in the rain.
~~~Eligible for the Golden Paws Program~~~
Adoptors who are age 60 years+ and up adopt a dog 7 years or older get $50 off the adoption fee!
Ask Jennifer
Q: Last night my dog broke out in red bumps. We ended up at the emergency room costing us a nice penny. Anything I could have done at home first?
A: There are many reasons for a dog to break out. Here are a few:
-- Immunization: Did your dog just get his annual shots?
-- Environment: Did you take a walk recently, did he go into some bushes, roll on the grass, walk in PetCo/PetSmart?
-- Food: Did you recently change his diet, give him a new treat, or something from the dinner table?
First and foremost, give the dog a cool bath. Then give your dog Benadryl, 25mg (adult strength, generic works as well). Repeat every two hours over a six hour period (three total pills will be given in the time frame of six hours). If no improvement or the dog is struggling breathing you need to go to the vet clinic.
Share your travel plans with MABTR and
in return help out a Boston
As many of you know MABTR covers 13 states. 75% of our adoptions occur between foster homes and adopters in different states, requiring MABTR to set up a transport by car. We do not fly our dogs.
Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car so we ask that you share with us your travel plan should you have room for a Boston to hitch a ride.
Just some examples, and not limited to, of routes completed. Note that some routes are short distances where others a whole day:
- Colorado Springs, CO to Cheyenne, WY
- Omaha, NE to St Louis, MO
- Omaha, NE to Boise, ID
- Des Moines, IA to St Paul, MN
- Kansas City, MO to Springfield, MO
Share with us your travel plans - even those scheduled in the future.
It is simple. Just email
luckypawpals@aol.com
your starting and ending location, date(s) of travel, and your name and phone number. We will file the travel schedule shared and if the need approaches we will contact you with details.
Most of our dogs ride well in cars without a crate, but if you require a crate we can supply one.
The doggies thank you for allowing them to hitch a ride!!!!! Without drivers we would struggle moving our dogs closer to their forever homes.
Remember that you can write off at tax time your gas or mileage when transporting our Bostons.
dogs rescued
in May!
86 dogs rescued to date in 2017
3,194 dogs rescued since November 2005!
We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.
AGE is
just a number
I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
*gender *age
*disability *health
