Showing Off Your Work
Second Annual Gallery Night This Week

Thursday, February 15th, will be our second annual Gallery Night at Brookville Intermediate School.  This evening will allow students in grades 4-8 to present authentic examples of their work to parents, grandparents and the public.  The event will particularly focus on the Project Based Learning efforts of students in these grades. We invite all of you to this special program.  It is a great opportunity to see the depth of work being accomplished by our students throughout the year.   A general schedule for the evening is as follows:

4th grade Wax Museum - 6:30 to 7:30pm
5th grade Amazing Race - 5:00 to 8:00pm
6th grade Shark Tank Innovations - 5:00 to 8:00pm; Book Author Activities 6:00 to 8:00pm
7th and 8th grade National History Museum - 5:00 to 8:00pm
Water Safety
Test Verify No Issues with Lead Levels
A tremendous amount of attention has been given lately to safe water supplies in public schools.  Last summer there were several school buildings around the State of Ohio where the test showed unhealthy signs of lead in the water.  Recently the Dayton Daily News reported a couple of schools in the Miami Valley had tested their water only to find lead levels above the acceptable range.

It had been quite some time since similar water test had been done on our Brookville buildings.  In an effort to be proactive, the district sent water samples off to the lab for testing.  Samples were taken from the intermediate and high school, the elementary, the district administrative offices and the bus garage.  In each case the lead level was determined to be "below the detection limit."  This assures that the water is safe for drinking, cooking, washing your hands or anything other imaginable public use.

It is comforting to know that as you see continued reports on the local and national level, the water in the Brookville School system has been tested and is safe!
Mrs. Ketchen Is New Guidance Secretary
The new face in the high school guidance office is a familiar one.  Mrs. Erin Ketchen, who is in her fifth year of work in the district, now holds that position.  Prior to this, Mrs. Ketchen was a high school study hall and lunch room monitor, then an intermediate school intervention paraprofessional.  She moved to the role of high school guidance secretary on January 26th. Mrs. Ketchen replaces Linda Limbert who left the district for other employment.

Mrs. Ketchen realizes the new position will involve a learning curve for her. However, she describes the change in duties as being challenging with foreign task and obligations, but at the same time exciting.  She uses adventurous to describe the first couple of weeks at the desk of the guidance office.

When we asked what has excited her the most in these initial days, she quickly pointed out "getting to know all the students." She went on to mention that she "has had fun investigating and learning," but said that knowing she will "...serve as a positive link between students and their future is was what I look most forward to every day."

The follow up question for Mrs. Ketchen was to point out the one thing she wants parents, students and her new colleagues to know about her?  Erin quickly responded that she wants everyone to know that she is "always willing to help in any way that I can."

"I am really looking forward to the remainder of the school year and learning everything I can about this position," said Mrs. Ketchen.  While she is a new face behind this desk, we are glad to add a familiar face to the high school guidance office!
Staying On the Edge Of Your Seat
Ashton Keish Mans the Scoreboard
BHS sophomore, Ashton Keish took on an interesting community service last winter. While going to study hall in the library, Mrs. Davis, who was the Site Manager for junior high basketball, asked Ashton if he would be willing to run the clock for basketball games.  He took on the responsibility and this Fall added volleyball to his duties. Having run the scoreboard for the 8th grade basketball tournament last year, Ashton is looking forward to doing the same for Brookville's 9th grade tournament coming up this weekend.

When asked what he enjoys about keeping the scoreboard he commented, "It keeps me on the edge of my seat.  I have to pay close attention and there is no boredom because of the constant starting and stopping."  Ashton admitted that some officials are much easier to work with than others.  As an example he pointed out that, "some of them will start the clock for timeouts while others just expect me to do it."

To date, his favorite moment was last year in a 7th grade girls' game when Malerie Ross caught an inbounds pass with 7 tenths of a second left and nailed a three pointer to win the game by one. He smiles in recalling several funny events that have happened in junior high basketball games.

Ashton would like to continue the community service that he enjoys so much. However, he also realizes that as he gets older and his coursework gets more demanding, it may or may not work out.  Before too long he hopes to add an after school job to his workload.

And the future?  Culinary Arts are calling this engaging member of the class of 2020.  "I have always loved to cook," he said.  At this time, asian coleslaw and chile are two of his specialties.  He hopes to add to his cooking repertoire and possibly move from the scorer's table to the kitchen table.  We believe he may just put together some dishes that would have all of us on the edge of our seats!!

Participants Chosen for Summer Buckeye Boys and Girls State Experience

Each year Brookville is one of the 900 plus Ohio high schools to send participants to the Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State program.

The Boys State Program is held June 10-17 at Miami University and is sponsored by the American Legion. It is a highly structured, intense, "hands on" workshop into Ohio Government.  Through a practical, objective, nonpartisan approach, participants in the American Legion Buckeye Boys State program are exposed to fundamental democratic principles in local, county and state elections and governmental functions, which prepare them for leadership roles as patriotic American citizens.  It is the single largest program of its type in the nation.  Over 1,200 delegates attend annually.

Buckeye Girls State is held the same week at University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio and is hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary.  It is a week-long program designed to educate Ohio's young women in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of good citizenship. The Girls State program has also had hundreds of annual attendees and provides a rich experience and unique look at citizenship and government within the State of Ohio.

To be chosen, the candidates were interviewed by community leaders from within Brookville on a Sunday afternoon.  During this opportunity, students had to display a strong academic standing, involvement in school activities, leadership abilities and a charisma that displays strong communication and personal interaction skills.   Brookville Police Chief Doug Jerome summed up the interview process this way, " I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing 16 dynamic students applying for the Buckeye Girls State Program. Once again, this process reinforced the abundant amount of potential, talent, and accomplishments that our students have gained from supporting families and Brookville Schools. This sense of civic pride among all applicants was overwhelming and consistent. Lastly, I can't recall another situation when I was ask to select a small number of finalist from a large group of candidates which had such a large number of academic, sporting, volunteer, and community service accomplishments."

With many students interviewing, 7 were chosen to represent Brookville High School.  The girls are: Emma Swabb, Hailey Petkewitz, Lauren Hinkle and Emily Weidner.  The boys are: Ethan Van Buskirk, Jacob Vore and Parker Holt.

We congratulate those chosen and believe they are outstanding representatives of our high school and community.  We look forward to them having a great experience at these long standing programs.
Winter Athletic Teams Entering Post-Season Tournaments
Regular Season Play Coming to a Close

As the calendar has flipped to a cold month of February, the winter athletic season is starting to heat up.  Teams either have or are wrapping up regular season contest and moving into tournaments.  Let's take a quick look at where things stand.

Boys' Basketball - The boys' team has just two games left in what has been a successful season thus far.  After notching their first win against Franklin in 9 years last Tuesday night at home, the team currently sports a record of 13-7. They will be at National Trail tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 13) and close out the regular season Friday night at Monroe.  The team received the #8 seed of 23 teams in their super sectional and will play the winner of National Trail and Carlisle on Wednesday, February 28 at 6pm at Vandalia Butler High School.

Girls' Basketball -  While this teams six wins may not seem like many, it was definitely a step in the right direction.  Coming off a winless season a year ago, this young program made positive strides during the 2017-18 season. The Lady Devils will open tournament play this Wednesday at 6pm against Greenview at Trotwood High School.

Swimming - Possibly the program showing the most growth in participation over recent years is the boys' & girls' swim team.  The Water Devils are farthest along in their season.  They competed in the SWBL meet the first weekend of February.  The boys' finished 6th in a 10 team field, while the girls finished 4th of 10 teams.  Highlights included every Brookville relay team, boys or girls, placing in the league meet.  Individually, sophomore Ellie Lenser finished 2nd in the 50y free, and junior Emma Swabb became the first female swimmer in Brookville history to win a league championship when she won both the 100y free and the 100y backstroke.

The team competed this past weekend in the OHSAA Sectional Meet.  The following athletes advanced to the District Meet this Friday at Miami University. The 200 Medley Relay team of Mary Guillen, Ellie Lenser, Emma Swabb and Grace Rohrer and the 200 Free Relay team of Guillen, Lenser, Swabb and Alex Ricciardi.  Individually, Emma Swabb qualified for districts in both the 100y and 200y Free.  In the relays this becomes the first time the women swimmers have sent teams to district.

Wrestling -  The wrestlers are possibly our youngest team competing this winter with only 1 senior in the starting lineup.  In the state dual meet competition the team advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals before losing a 36-36 tied match to Blanchester on criteria.  Individually, the young grapplers have matured and improved week in and week out.  They travel to Milton-Union this weekend to compete in the always tough SWBL Tournament.  That will be followed with the OHSAA Sectional Tournament on February 23-24.

Cheerleading -  Eleven of our school's varsity cheerleaders have joined together as a competition squad this winter.  To date the group has competed in one competition at Springboro High School where they finished in sixth place of nine competition cheer squads.  Coach Laura Staggs was very pleased as the girls were up against much larger schools and this was our first venture back into competition in several years.  This weekend will be busy for the Cheering Blue Devils.  They will compete in the SWBL against the other Southwestern Division schools at Franklin on Saturday and then Sunday will compete at Centerville in the Cheer for the Cure competition.  The cheerleading squads are scored on a national scoring system based on multiple elements.  We wish the ladies the best this weekend!!

Transportation News
Arlington Road Overpass Update
We would like to remind everyone that sometime between March 1st to 15th the Arlington Rd. overpass will be closed.  This really only affects one bus route. That is bus 6 driven by Cheryl Hoops. The transportation department has already taken a look at what the alternative route for this bus will be and if pick up and drop off times are affected in any way parents will be notified.

Equally we would remind parents who may be coming to pick children up at school or to attend athletic and school events to remember that this overpass will be out from the beginning of March through the remainder of the school year.  Please be aware of your other routing options and how that may affect your drive time.
High 5's

Mr. Wright and the FFA - Students in Mr. Wright's FFA program made and donated 10 easels for the BIS Gallery Night.  These easels will be used to display student work and signage.  Thank You FFA members!!

High School Cheerleaders -  The Cheerleaders participated in the Springboro Cheer Competition.  In what was their first competitive cheering for several years these young ladies finished 6th of 9 teams.  Most schools in the competition, which was won by Miamisburg, were from much larger districts.  Good job cheerleaders!!

Emma Swabb  - BHS junior Emma Swabb became the first female swimmer in school history to win an SWBL Championship.  In fact, she won two!  At the league meet February 2, Emma won the 100y backstroke and the 100y free.  The only other league championship won by a Brookville swimmer was when Emma's brother Ricky won the 50y free his senior year.  Congratulations Emma!!
