Corrosion protection program leads to huge cost savings

In just two years, the corrosion protection program has used a mix of technology and age-old science to save customers more than $90 million by extending the life of existing steel or ductile iron water pipes.

Operating approximately 1,400 miles of steel and ductile iron pipe in our distribution system, this program diverts corrosion away from underground water pipes through the installation of sacrificial anodes.

With a program budget of over $4 million over the past two years, the return on investment has been significant. Renewing water mains with corrosion protection is approximately 2 percent to 5 percent of the cost of replacing water mains, providing considerable savings for our customers.
Winning with a sustainable fleet

We strive to be a leader in environmental stewardship and do our part to improve local air quality. Our efforts to reduce emissions from fleet vehicles earned top honors recently at the Green Transportation Summit's annual Western Region Sustainable Fleet Awards in Portland, Ore.

We received the Leading by Example award in the government large fleet (more than 100 vehicles) category for setting a great example for other utilities and fleets to follow.

Second-oldest water valve sees sun for first time in 129+ years

Recently, we unearthed an important piece of Colorado Springs' history: Valve #2, the second-oldest water valve in the city. It was removed as part of a water main replacement project on Pikes Peak Avenue.

The cast iron valve, dated 1888, was installed approximately five years after the first Antlers Hotel opened in 1883 and was a key component of the city's earliest efforts to modernize its water distribution system.

The removal of water valve #2 is symbolic of our massive efforts to renew aging water mains and improve service reliability.  Watch the valve being removed.
