Values Matter at YC
Last fall, we introduced "Values Matter" as a theme for the Annual Fund, and to recognize the partnership with families as our students are nurtured within the walls and halls of York Catholic. Now that our seniors have graduated and are starting the next part of their educational and life journeys, we are working hard to close our Annual Fund goal.

It's time to celebrate your belief in Catholic education, and a YC education in particular. Please support our Annual Fund, and help us close the gap to our $300,000 objective by June 30, 2017. Remember, if you or a spouse works for a matching gift company, your personal gift can double or triple in value to YC. At York Catholic, every student matters, and every gift matters.

Visit yorkcatholic.org and click on the Donate key to make an online gift in any amount. Your participation as a YC community member, matters -- thank you from our school and our students most of all.

Parent Referral Program
If you know a friend, family member or anyone looking for a high-quality, Christ-centered education for their children who do not already attend a Catholic school, you could receive a $50 credit toward your child's tuition at York Catholic, with a chance to win a $500 credit.

York Catholic's Parent Referral Program is a win-win for everyone involved. Referred students receive an outstanding education from York Catholic, while parents of the referred families get peace of mind knowing their child is gaining so much more than just a top-notch education.  Families who refer someone who registers at York Catholic receive a $50 credit towards their child's tuition.

You, as parents, are our best ambassadors.   In order for the Parent Referral Program to be a success, we need information about individuals who may be interested in joining the York Catholic family. All you need to do is click here to fill out the form. During the registration process, if you are listed as the referring individual for a friend or other enrolling individual, we will credit your child 's account with $50.  This month, one family who referred someone who enrolled at YC will be randomly selected to win a $500 tuition credit.

It really is that simple. So go ahead. Please click on the link above and allow us the opportunity to do what we love -- help to develop, nurture and encourage children so they may grow in faith, mind, and heart. Mail or email the form to us and we will take it from there!

Thank you for all you do for our school!

Final Exams
Final examinations for students in Grades 8-11 are scheduled for Thursday, June 1; Friday, June 2; Monday, June 5.  It is important that all students are present for these exams.  Please do not arrange vacations during these days.  Student trips or vacations will not be approved.  Students will not be permitted to take a make-up exam due to a trip.

June 1  English & Foreign Language
June 2 Math & Social Studies
June 5  Religion & Science

For most students, two exams will be scheduled for each day, except where conflicts will necessitate three.  The testing periods will be 60 minutes.  Students are to report directly to their first test each day; attendance will be taken in the testing rooms, not in the homerooms.  Should a student not have an exam until the second testing period, he/she need not report until that time.  If a student does not have an exam in the second exam slot, the student is free to leave school at 9:45 AM.

Approximate time frame for most students will be 8:15 AM until 11:00 AM.  School districts have re-arranged their pick-up times to accommodate our early dismissal.

Lunch will not be served on Exam days.

For grades 9-11, these semester exams will comprise 1/5 of the second semester grade.  Students in grade 8 will prepare for and take a final exam; this will be presented as a learning experience in preparation for the transition into senior high school.

In light of the importance of these exams and their scheduling, the only absence that will be accepted on these days will be with a doctor's excuse.

Parents are encouraged to attend.

At the conclusion of Mass, Lifetouch Photography will be making a brief presentation to juniors about senior portraits.

Sports Physicals Required
In previous years, our Physical date at OSS Health has been after school ends.  Please note, this year, our scheduled date is during the last week of school, this Monday, June 5.

This is an excellent opportunity to complete the state-required Physical exam for participation in ALL athletics and marching band.

Please read below for complete details.

Athletic Physicals
All athletes must have a physical dated after June 1, 2017 to be eligible to participate in Fall, Winter, and Spring sports.  Physicals given prior to June 1, 2017 are NOT recognized by the PIAA.

Athletic Physicals for all sports for the 2017-2018 school year will be held on Monday, June 5, from 6-7:30 PM at OSS Health at 1855 Powder Mill Road.  Students must bring their completed 7-page PIAA Comprehensive Initial Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form (CIPPE) that can be printed here or accessed on the homepage of the YC website at www.yorkcatholic.org  (the correct forms will be dated March 22, 2017 at the bottom of page 1).  The forms must be signed by a parent.  Cost for the physical is $15.  Checks should be made payable to York Catholic.  OSS requests student-athletes DO NOT enter the building prior to 5:45 PM.

If you go to your own doctor, you must use the PIAA Sports Physical Form (CIPPE) referenced above.  No other form is acceptable.

Please note:  OSS is conducting sports physicals ONLY.  OSS staff will not be performing driver's license physicals or 11th grade physicals.  All students entering Grade 11 are required by the State of Pennsylvania to have a complete physical prior to the start of the school year.  Grade 11 athletes must schedule an appointment with their personal physician between June 1, 2017 and August 9, 2017.  Be sure to take both physical forms to the appointment (sports physical form & Grade 11 physical form).

ImPACT Testing
There has been extensive media coverage about athletics and concussions.  York Catholic has been at the forefront in this area and includes the ImPACT Test (Immediate Post-Concussive Assessment and Cognitive Testing) to monitor our athletes.

All interscholastic athletes, cheerleaders, and members of the marching band and bandfront are required to take an ImPACT Test to establish a cognitive baseline for concussions. This is an established technology used in order to determine the return to play/activity guidelines for participants who have sustained a concussion.

The test is administered on a computer.  The initial baseline is adequate for two years. Therefore, if a student participated on a YC team last season and had an ImPACT test, he or she is not required to repeat it this season.

It is the athlete's responsibility to email Brad Hayek at [email protected]  to see if a valid ImPACT Test is on file at YC.  If an ImPACT test needs to be taken or re-taken, contact Mr. Hayek for instructions.  Once completed, the student must check with Mr. Hayek to see if the updated ImPACT Test was transmitted properly and is on file.

Sports Physical Forms and ImPACT Tests must be given to Mr. Hayek by August 9 to be permitted to start Fall practice.

For more information, contact Brad Hayek at [email protected] , or Kyle Smink at [email protected] .

Summer Assignments
Reading
York Catholic High School views the development of life-long habits of reading as a hallmark of an educated man or woman, and it encourages each student to read widely throughout the year.  The school also recognizes the value of other on-going academic engagement during the summer months.  Summer reading and other intellectual activities serve to stimulate, to enrich, and to reinforce academic skills during the summer hiatus.  Each current student has received a packet with the assignments for summer reading.  The assignments are also available on the home page of the YC website at  www.yorkcatholic.org  in the Announcements section, titled, "Summer Assignments," and on the Forms & Documents page.  Each grade level's requirements are clearly explained and testing and/or projects are due at the start of the 2017-18 school year. Click  here  for the list of books for the summer reading projects.

Math
Keeping students' math skills strong during the summer months helps to avoid the "summer slide" and aids in less review time when school resumes. Students should complete their Summer Math Assignments and return them by August 28.  The assignments are available on the home page of the YC website at  www.yorkcatholic.org  in the Announcements section, titled, "Summer Assignments," and on the Forms & Documents page.

Global Aid Network (GAiN) in Mount Joy, PA, will hold its June Packing event from Tuesday, June 20, through Saturday, June 24 from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM.
