MARCH MADNESS STARTS THIS WEEK!
Lent is upon us and so is the Lenten contest between Goats and Chickens in support of Episcopal Relief and Development. Your gift of $80 will make it possible for a family in a developing country to have either a goat or some chickens which provides vital food and income and thus enables sustainability. With your gift you have the opportunity to name your animal; it can be named to honor a family member, a Biblical or literary figure, pet, favorite team, or anything you can dream up. The animals will be displayed on a bulletin board in the hall. Gifts of any amount will go towards the purchase of animals. Last year we had a competition between Goats and Pigs and raised enough money for 100 animals. Let’s see what Christ Church members can do in the 2018 MARCH MADNESS campaign!!! You may pick up a pink "March Madness" envelope on the information table, complete the form, enclose your check, and mail it or leave it at the church.

CREATION OF NEW CHAPTER OF
THE UNION OF BLACK EPISCOPALIANS
& THE CELEBRATION OF THE FEAST DAY OF ABSALOM JONES
Saturday, February 17 ~ 5:00 PM ~ Canterbury Chapel, Tuscaloosa, AL
The Episcopal Diocese of Alabama along with the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast are endeavoring to host the inaugural Absalom Jones Feast Day in celebration of the founding of the joint Alabama Chapter of the The Union of Black Episcopalians. Absalom Jones, ordained in 1818, was the first black priest ordained in the Episcopal Church. The UBE is a confederation of more than 55 chapters and interest groups throughout the continental United States and the Caribbean. The Union also has members in Canada, Africa and Latin America. Membership is open to any one, regardless of ethnicity. The only requirement is a commitment to the core mission:
to unite the diverse cultures, concerns and gifts of Black Episcopalians by providing preparation and encouragement for living the Baptismal Covenant and fully participating in the mission and governance of The Episcopal Church. It is in this spirit of advocacy, unity, and justice that parishioners from the Diocese of Alabama and the Diocese of The Central Gulf Coast have combined forces to create a joint chapter to be known as The Alexander Crummell Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians to be headquartered at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Birmingham, Alabama. Among its first activities will be the celebration of The Feast Day of Absalom Jones on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 5PM. The event will be held at the Canterbury Chapel, 812 5th Ave., Tuscaloosa, AL. For more information, please contact Joe McDaniel, Jr. at 415-225-9066 or

CANTERBURY CHOIR
OPEN ENROLLMENT THROUGH FEBRUARY 2018
The Canterbury Choir provides children of the parish an opportunity to participate in a vital liturgical ministry: namely the offering of choral music during times of worship. All parish and EDS children in grades 1-8 are eligible to participate in Canterbury Choir. The Canterbury Choir sings in church during the 10:30 AM service once a month. Aspiring Canterbury Choir members should have a willingness to learn how to sing properly; a desire to make new friends in a large group; an ability to show reverence while providing an important role in worship; and a positive attitude. Training is provided on a weekly basis during the school year from 3:00 to 4:15 PM every Thursday afternoon. We begin with a snack at 3:00, so those who must arrive late are still encouraged to participate. Prior demonstration of singing skills is not required to learn how to be an effective singer. Interested? Please contact Treece Efird at the church, 432-5115, or via e-mail at
CanterburyChoir@christ-church.net

Being compassionate is much more than warm and loving feelings about our world and fellow human beings. In her book,
Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life
, Karen Armstrong writes that one must also become mindful of behavior which encourages or discourages compassion. This week we will be discussing her fifth step in the process to a compassionate life,
Mindfulness.
This chapter is a very short one, pages 105-109, but is extremely significant for the compassion journey. Join us with thoughts and inspirational stories of being a compassionate person. Books are still available. Contact David Starling by phone or text at (850) 712-0977 or email
dastarling@cox.net
.
This class meets upstairs in Rm. 32 of the Christian Education Building. Led by David Starling.
Video Discussion for Parents & Young Adults
This class meets upstairs in the Library of the Christian Education Building. Led by Meredith Jones.
Sunday Centering Prayer Group —
Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, in which we experience God's presence within us. We begin by taking a few minutes to go over the basic guidelines of the practice for anyone who is new. We then sit together in the 20-minute prayer period, followed by a brief time for sharing and intercessory prayer. All are welcome — newcomers and experienced practitioners.
This class meets in the Centering Prayer room on the administrative hallway. The facilitator is Joan White.

Each week our worship service is enhanced with beautiful fresh flowers. After the Sunday services, the altar flower arrangements are reworked into smaller arrangements. These arrangements are delivered to members of our parish family that are unable to attend a Sunday service. The altar flowers are a memorial, a thanksgiving for an anniversary, a birthday, a new birth, or a thanksgiving for God's blessings. The donation is listed in the weekly bulletin. Forms to participate in this ministry are available on the information table in the Parish Office.
