Letter from the Artistic Director
Four musicals in four months? We must be crazy!
It's true. We're the Toledo. Repertoire. Theatre. And in the summer, we become musicalholics. With so many ambitious projects in the hopper, what we really need is...HELP! (for this healthy addiction, that is).
Right now, Amy Spaulding-Heuring's puckish production of
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is delighting our audiences with its hilarious hijinks and bubbly Sondheim score; running June 2 through June 18.
In July, a stellar teen cast brings the explosive musical
Hairspray to vibrant life. It's nonstop dancing, exuberant energy, and a Tony-winning score. It runs July 13-16.
In August, our younger actors present the enchanting
A Year with Frog & Toad, a story about community, kindness, and the value of friendship. Arnold Lobel's delightful animal characters come to life, and sing!
And in September, we kick off our 85th season with the Northwest Ohio premiere of the sexy and compelling musical
Bonnie & Clyde, boasting an unforgettable score by Frank Wildhorn and Don Black.
Of course, we'd love to see you in our audience, but have you ever thought about...a larger role? Virtually every task, both backstage and on-, is performed by volunteers, and the size of your commitment is up to you. We would love to have you. Deborah M. Coulter-Harris: Deborah Coulter-Harris, Ph. D., a native of Massachusetts, currently teaches full time in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Toledo; she was awarded UT's Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2012. Deborah received her Ph.D. in 18th century British Literature and Linguistics from The University of Toledo in 1995; she also possesses a Master of Science degree in Business and Human Relations from Abilene Christian University in Texas, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. Deborah has an Honors Diploma in the Russian language from the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) in Monterey, California, and is a graduate of the Sherman Kent School of Analysis, Career Analyst Program at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
During the 1970s, Deborah studied acting at the famous Abbey Theatre and Gate Theatre schools in Dublin, Ireland, and performed in numerous classical plays overseas. While in Ireland, Deborah published her first collection of poetry, wrote and performed a weekly radio show for RTE, Irish National Radio, and appeared on a weekly sitcom for RTE television.
Dr. Coulter-Harris has also worked as speechwriter and Executive Assistant (EA) for Mr. L.J. Sevin, the CEO of Mostek Corporation. She has served as a Russian linguist in the United States Army and as a civilian at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where she also studied an advanced Russian Language course. During her travels as an Army wife, she taught at colleges and universities in Greece, Ohio, New York, and Philadelphia. Just prior to coming to Toledo in 2003, she served as an officer and as a Middle East Political Analyst at Central Intelligence Agency where she wrote 52 pieces of Intelligence for President Clinton's and President George W. Bush's administrations; she won 5 Exceptional Performance Awards for her analysis and trade craft.
Dr. Coulter-Harris is the author of six books, including two plays. She has been in 128 plays and her work was most recently seen on the Toledo Rep stage in
Sheba Rules, a play she wrote that was staged during our "Toledo Voices" playwright inaugural event.

"Toledo Rep puts comedy in motion"
"Toledo Repertoire Theatre, has deep comedy roots, all the way back to ancient Rome.
It was inspired by the works of Plautus, born in third century B.C., but A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum has modern Broadway connections too. The show, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, opened there in 1962. It is the first show for which Sondheim is the composer and lyricist, said Amy Spaulding-Heuring, the Rep's director, who was drawn to it because she's always wanted to do a Sondheim show.
Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart wrote the book; Gelbart also was the creator and producer of TV's M*A*S*H.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is filled with bawdy humor and double-entendres, mistaken identities, pratfalls, disguises, and quick entrances and exits, and other farcical touches".

Those wishing to serve should have a vested interest in the Toledo Rep and its continuation as a vital part of the cultural fabric of our community. The responsibilities for Board and Committee members are different. Due to bylaw guidelines, we have a limited number of Board seats. However, we have many more Committee positions available. If you should have an interest in either area, please complete the online form.

Education is one of the central aspects of our mission here at the Toledo Rep and we are always looking for new instructors to include in our program. If you have any interest in being a part of our education program, please let us know! A background in teaching is desired, although not necessarily required. We are looking for people experienced in one or more of the many aspects of theatre, with a passion and desire to share those experiences and skills with others. Our program includes classes, workshops and camps for children, teens and adults.
