We were excited to receive three grant awards over the past three weeks to expand our ESL services. CFL currently provides ESL classes to 450 immigrants annually. With the new funding we plan to serve 650 ESL students in the coming program year with new initiatives. We are honored to receive these grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the Samuel S. Fels Fund and the Digital Literacy Alliance. We thank them for their generous support.
First Trip to Free Library

Words such as reference book, loan, borrow, due date, circulation desk, story hour, where can I find.....?, and check it out, now have a richer meaning for the 12 ESL students who visited the Free Library of Philadelphia's Paschalville branch in Southwest Philadelphia for the first time on May 24. Librarian Nyia Morrison guided the students thorough the library, answering questions along the way. ESL student Moussa valued the visit. "During our visit to the library, I discovered that the library is a learning place.
Walk the World

On June 8, eight staff from CFL joined 50 walkers from Taylor & Francis in Philadelphia to "Walk the World" in Old City.   Informa's Academic Publishing division, known as Taylor & Francis in Philadelphia, raised $1,390 for CFL. Those who finished the six mile walk were rewarded with donated homemade ice cream from the S.S. Franklin Fountain at their stand in Spruce Street Harbor Park.
CFL Managers Teach Math to ESL Instructors State-Wide

When we think about ESL instruction, the first thing that comes to mind is to help our students to become proficient in English. Math is sometimes forgotten. CFL understands the need to introduce math into ESL instruction, and to further our students' knowledge with more advanced math activities.

Foreign Fulbright Scholars Come to CFL

It's not everyday that you get to meet with Fulbright Students from 42 countries! On March 17 and on May 5, two different groups of graduate students, from various universities and colleges throughout the U.S., came to learn about CFL.  It was a great discussion, with CFL panelists Michael Westover, Mark Edmonds and Hanna Schlosser; ESL students Jing Jing Sun, Sokhna   Diouf and Lansana   Fofana ; and  Latasha Williamson, alumna.

Jing Jing came here from China three years ago with no knowledge of English. Now she is in CFL's highest-level ESL class and is studying for the TOEFL exam to enter a master's program in the U.S.  Click here to view Jing Jing's speech. Sokhna   Diouf came from Senegal and has also been in this country for three years. " Now I'm taking classes at CFL and going to Delaware County Community College to get a certificate in computer aided drafting and design. I hope that can help me get back into my field as a design engineer, and start a new career in this beautiful country." Click here to view Sokhna's speech.
