Roxbury Schools Communication Effectiveness Survey
Roxbury Township Public Schools is striving to become a certified NJ Sustainable School as outlined in our district goals for this year.
Sustainable Jersey for Schools
is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time.
As part of the certification process, the district needs to evaluate the effectiveness of its communication strategies. That's where you come in!

New Franklin School Principal Getting Her Feet Wet
 What started as an interim position at the grades K-4 Franklin School in Succasunna looks like it might just become a permanent principal's position for Montville Township resident Lisa Ferrare.
She began as an interim principal in the first weeks of March, filling in for Principal Chris Deery. Deery, however, has been moved to another position in the K-12 district, and now has announced plans to retire on Nov. 1.
At the Franklin School, she said she wants to get to know everyone and build strong relationships before setting goals for the school.
"They already have a lot of good programs in place here," she said. "There are great things for families. Everyone is so friendly," she said.
Students in Roxbury, she said, are all so polite, kind and welcoming, as they get to know her.
In April, Superintendent of Schools Loretta Radulic introduced Franklin parents to Ferrare by a letter posted to the school's website.
"Mrs. Ferrare comes to us with a total of 15 years of experience in education, with seven being served as a building-level administrator. Her role as an assistant principal and then as principal in the Springfield Public School District, along with her time spent as an interim instructional supervisor for the Millburn Township Public Schools, have afforded Mrs. Ferrare the opportunity to work with students and teachers in all subject areas and specialties, including special education and English as a Second Language," Radulic said.

EMS Annual Student Unity Tour Raises Funds for Roxbury Police
 Seventh and eighth graders from Eisenhower Middle School participated in its second annual EMS Student Unity Tour yesterday afternoon under clear skies and warm weather at Horseshoe Lake Park.
Over 270 middle schoolers and some staff rode their bikes and cheered on their classmates to raise money for the National Police Unity Tour.
Student riders had the option to ride one lap (1.75 miles) or two laps (3.5 miles) around Horseshoe Lake Park to honor Police Officers that had fallen in the line of duty. EMS students were fortunate enough to ride alongside many of the local police officers that participated in the National Unity Tour a few weeks ago to Washington, D.C.
This year's EMS Student Unity Tour raised more than $6,000 for the National Police Unity Tour.

First Roxbury "Summer Kickoff" Gives Back to Social Services
 A group clapped along to the beat as Irish step dancers performed onstage. Tents run by local businesses and organizations offered information about their services and fundraising efforts. People dropped off canned goods as donations to Roxbury Social Services.
The Roxbury High School Student Council's first "Summer Kickoff" was in full swing.
Held Saturday at Horseshoe Lakeu Park in Succasunna, the event "was created to bring the community together for one day where everyone is involved, all age groups invited and all types of activities are included," the student council said.
Entertainment was provided in many forms at the "Kickoff," where attendees could enjoy food trucks, outdoor games, live bands and dance performances, or check out vendor tents where clothing, jewelry and other products were sold.
Reduced ticket prices were offered to anyone who brought a canned food item as a donation to Roxbury Social Services. The donation response was fairly large, according to Mathis, who said student council members had already loaded some of the canned goods into their cars less than two hours into the event. One person showed up just to drop off his own bag of cans while he was in the area, she said.

S.A.I.L. Academy Covers Keeping Your Kids Safe Online at Home
 The fourth and final installment of the Student Academic Intervention and Learning (SAIL) Parent Academy for this year was held at Franklin School on May 18th.
Families were treated to free ice cream sundaes on a hot May day before parents were split off to attend a workshop on keeping kids safe online at home.
Detective Brian Kearns from the NJ State Police showed parents what to be on the lookout for technology and Internet wise to keep their kids safe. The presentation, though geared for the elementary level also covered the middle and high school ages.

Roxbury High School Honors Latest Groups of 'Students of the Month'
 Roxbury High School, located in Succasunna, has honored its students of the month for April.
The student recognition program at Roxbury High School is designed to identify model students. Recognizing student achievement helps to create a more positive school climate and culture. Each month, from October through May, a student will be recognized as "Student of the Month" in one of 11 subject areas, for capturing what it means to be a model student, reinforcing the ideals of hard work, determination, perseverance, and persistence.

Nixon School JAM Raises Funds FOR THE KIDS
 Nixon Elementary School in Landing, NJ brought back the JAM and put it out to the school community to help raise money FOR THE KIDS and the Four Diamonds Association.
The Nixon community was asked to bring in donations during the week of May 8th to help the
children at Hershey Hospital.
Principal Danielle Lynch shared with the Nixon families via her blog, "It was with extreme pride that I share with you the final amount collected FOR THE KIDS. With the additional donations made, the Nixon School community collected $1,532.64! This incredible display of generosity sends a powerful message to our students...it truly does take JUST A MINUTE to make a difference."

Google Expeditions -- iPod Touch Requests
The Roxbury School District is working to bring Google Expeditions to our students. In order to help with this effort, the Technology Department is asking if anyone has any old iPod touches they are not longer using anymore that they would be willing to donate to the district.

Congrats Alexis Smith, Named 2017 NJSIAA Scholar Athlete of the Year
 Roxbury High School senior Alexis Smith was named the 2017 NJSIAA Scholar Athlete of the Year at a program on May 21st in Edison, NJ.
This award is given to a student who competes at a high level on a varsity sport, has a high grade point average, and exhibits outstanding school and community citizenship.
In attendance were coaches Derek Bischoff and Laura Schmidt.
Kleinsorgen and Voelbel Named Morris County Scholar Athletes of the Year
Congratulations to Roxbury High School Seniors Jackie Kleinsorgen and Tucker Voelbel for being named 2017 Morris County Scholar Athletes of the Year by the MCSADA on May 24th.
Jackie is the daughter of Debbie and Eric Kleinsorgen. She is ranked in the top 10 of the Senior class and a member of the National Honor Society. Jackie is a four letter winner for the Gaels Swim Team and will swim for the University of Miami next year.
Tucker Voelbel is ranked in the top 10 of his class and a National Honor Society member as well. He earned three letters in both football and baseball. Tucker will attend Virginia Tech University in the fall.
Athletic Trainer Joe Koch Named Winner of the 2017 Newell Regional Award
Congratulations Roxbury High School Athletic Trainer Joe Koch for being named the winner of the 2017 Newell Regional Award.
The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities.
Koch is now eligible for the National Award which
will be determined by The Newell Award National Committee and announced in May 2017.
Roxbury Baseball Updates:
Roxbury Baseball Beats the Heat and Bloomfield
 The Roxbury High School baseball team played, and won, a scorcher in Bloomfield on Thursday where the heat was so oppressive the opposing pitcher had to call time out for a water break.
But the Gaels kept their cool, coming out with an early lead that was helped by Will Findlay's home run blast to left field. Tucker Voelbel and Jared Shimenti both scored doubles while the rest of the lineup kept things hot with singles and multiple base stealing.
Pitching was a real team effort with Jared Shimenti starting, Will Findlay and Mike Roumes relieving and Thomas Darling closing out the game. Both teams had 11 hits, but the final score had the Gaels on top: Roxbury 11, Bloomfield 8. Click here to read this coverage from Tap Into Roxbury.
Roxbury (11) at Bloomfield (8) - Baseball - May 18th
Will Findlay hit a three-run home run and Jared Schimenti collected three more RBIs as Roxbury defeated Bloomfield, 11-8, in Bloomfield.
Schimenti collected his runs off a double and a single as Michael Roumes plated two more runs off three singles. Findlay also earned the win on the hill as he pitched one inning in relief and struck out two batters while allowing an earned run off one hit.
Roger Garcia and Kyle Tice led Bloomfield at the plate with two RBIs apiece with both players tallying those runs off doubles. Elliot Urgent posted a triple as Danny Carter and Emmanuel Corporan each collected a double. Marcus Wolf was tagged with the loss. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.
Roxbury Baseball Wins Squeaker to Advance in State Tournament
 The Roxbury High School baseball team on Monday advanced in state tournament play by narrowly defeating Ramapo at home.
The 10-9 victory in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament means the Gaels will next take on either West Essex or Old Tappan.
It was a back-and-forth contest that had Roxbury jump in front first in the second inning only to have Ramapo put five runs on the scoreboard in the next inning to tie the game.
The Gaels are now 16-8.

Ramapo (9) at Roxbury (10), NJSIAA Tournament, First Round, North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 - Baseball - May 22nd
Senior first baseman Dan Hankowski went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI for fifth-seeded Roxbury in its 10-9 victory over 12th-seeded Ramapo in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament.
Freshman right fielder Jared Schimenti went 1-for-3 with three RBI for Roxbury.
Junior Donovan Brady tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out three batters to pick up the win.

Roxbury (0) at Indian Hills (7), NJSIAA Tournament, First Round, North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 - Softball - May 18th
Angela Saric allowed no runs off six hits and struck out eight batters as eighth-seeded Indian Hills topped ninth-seeded Roxbury, 7-0, in the opening round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Oakland.
Caitlyn Logatto provided the pop at the plate for Indian Hills, driving in three runs off three singles. Julia Blezow added another RBI thanks to two triples and a single while Adriana Saab collected a triple as well.
Emily Song paced Roxbury at the plate with two singles as Natalie Decena, Hailey Womer, Jessica Michaels and Shannon Foote also posted a single.
Indian Hills will now face the winner of top-seeded West Essex and 16th-seeded Ramapo in the quarterfinal round on Monday at a time to be determined. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.
Roxbury (1) at Morris Knolls (5) - Softball - May 19th
Kayla Turcios, Nicole Reilly and Meaghan Thompson combined to pitch a no-hitter and lead Morris Knolls to a 5-1 victory over Roxbury in Rockaway.

Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Updates:
Roxbury Lacrosse Stomps Randolph in State Game, Gives Coach 100th Career Win
 The Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team easily beat Randolph 12-3 in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey Group 3 state tournament sectionals on Saturday, giving its coach his 100th career win in the process.
The credit for the victory goes to the defense as much as the offense. The Gaels' defenders kept Randolph scoreless in the first half while the offense racked up seven goals.
Roxbury's offense was lead by senior and captain Dave Biank, who broke the 100-points-per-season threshold with six goals and one assist. The rest of the scoring came from a slew of teammates. Matt Dancsecs had two goals and one assist, Eric D'Arminio had a goal and three assists, Anthony Perhaps and Zach Poissant each had a goal and an assist, Ryan Fehsal had a goal and Paul Shadel had three assists.
Goaltender Wayne Safreed made six saves.
In trouncing the Rams, Roxbury handed coach Chris Blough his 100th career victory and advanced the team on to the state semifinals.

Dave Biank notched his 100th point of the season contributing six goals and one assist for second-seeded Roxbury, in its win over seventh-seeded Randolph, 12-3, in the quarterfinal round of the North Jersey, Group 3 tournament in Succasunna.
Roxbury Head Coach Chris Blough also earned his 100th career win.
Matt Dancsecs recorded two goals and one assist while Eric D'Arminio had one goal and three assists for Roxbury. Anthony Perhacs, Zach Poissant and Ryan Fehsal each had a goal as well.

In a Roxbury High School First, Boys Lacrosse Reaches State Finals
 The Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team on Wednesday beat Princeton and made history in doing so: The Gaels, for the first time, made it to the finals in state tournament play.Roxbury's 6-5 defeat of Princeton in the semifinal match came with only a few seconds left when Matt Dancsecs broke a 5-5 tie for a dramatic victory in a tight game. Dancsecs's goal was his third of the game, a contest in which Dave Biank, Paul Shadel and Eric D'Arminio also each scored goals.The state championship game will pit the 19-3 Gaels against No. 1 seed Summit on Saturday. Summit defeated Scotch Plains-Fanwood 13-4 on Wednesday.

Roxbury, with Late Run, Beats Hopewell Valley in North 2, Group 3 Quarterfinals
When the fourth and fifth seeds meet up in the state tournament the expectation is usually for a competitive game, which is exactly what
Hopewell Valley and
Roxbury delivered Thursday.
The teams traded goals throughout the game, with neither able to take a lead larger than three.

Katia Carnevale tallied a game-high five goals and Anna Huntley-Robertson added three scores to lead top-seeded Summit, No. 3 in the NJ.com Top 20, to a 14-3 victory over fifth-seeded Roxbury in the semifinals of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 tournament in Summit.
Summit will host neighbor second-seeded and No. 11 Chatham in Thursday's final.
Julia Szynal had two goals with four assists and Anna DiSibio, Aca Spotts, Shannon Groskoph, and Kelsey Space each posted a goal apiece for Summit, which will host neighbor second-seeded and No. 11 Chatham in Thursday's final.

Roxbury High School Athletes Raising Money for National Championships
As the school year winds down, the Roxbury track and field teams are just gearing up.
For the first time in the history of the program, 11 athletes have qualified to participate in this year's Outdoor National Championships. They will take place from June 16-18 in Greensboro, N.C.
Those students include Lexi Smith, Kevin Sembrat, Karly Forker, Tyshon Bradley, Jordan Morris, Victor Arias, Jess Cammarata, Harley Heun, Kayla Bedel-Franklin, Brandon Longtine and Bridget Doherty
The entire program is buzzing with excitement in anticipation of the meet.
Participation in the National Championships doesn't come without a price, though. Through the program's booster club, the teams have set up a
GoFundMe page
to raise money for travel expenses. The ultimate goal is, of course, to send all 11 athletes to Greensboro. It won't happen without help from outside.
The student-athletes are taking it upon themselves to reach out to local businesses and other connections within the community.

Roxbury Boys Golf Updates:
Roxbury Golf Wins 3rd Sectional Championship
The Roxbury Golf Team avenged an earlier season loss to Randolph on May 22 to win its third straight conference county championship.
The team won 164-167 at Flanders Gold thanks to a fantastic 35 shot by senior captain Tom Fleming.
The team is currently 13-4.

Join us for the Roxbury High School Senior Art Show next Thursday, June 1st from 7-9 p.m. in the RHS Auxiliary Gym (by the Gym Entrance).
Come out and support the arts and these talented students!
Kindness for Christopher Color Fun Run - June 11th
 Join the Roxbury High School's Interact Club for its 4th Annual Color Fun Run on Sunday, June 11th at Horseshoe Lake. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with the event starting at 10.
In the past 3 years, they've raised a total of $47,000 for families in need, such as Mike Corrente and Joey Clayton, who were both suffering from brain cancer. These runs attract people from all over the state, and around the country, who want to raise money and have fun! We have a
color run
, zumba class, musical performances, a DJ, sandwiches, ice cream, a color throw, and more!!
This year, our cause is
Kindness for Christopher. Christopher D'Amico is a 10-year-old boy who passed away at Lake Hopatcong after a pontoon boating accident. Christopher was always smiling, and spread kindness wherever he went. Because of this, the D'Amico family decided not to let his legacy of joy fade. They started a small movement, encouraging people to commit random acts of kindness, particularly on the 24th of every month. This movement quickly grew ten-fold, and is now worldwide!
Our mission is to raise money to aid the family in spreading kindness in every way possible. So this is our challenge for you: In addition to the $25 ticket price ($30 if you pay the day of and $20 if you are a group of 10 or more), we ask that you do one random act of kindness for someone, whether it is carrying groceries, leaving a nice note on someone's car, buying coffee for a person in front of you online, bringing home flowers for a loved one, or doing ANYTHING that will spread Christopher's legacy of kindness.

This is an easy, practically effortless way to raise funds for our schools by purchasing items you buy all the time.

Roxbury Alumni Association is Looking for Board of Directors
 The Roxbury Alumni Association is looking to expand its current board of directors. They are looking for energetic alum interested in getting involved with Alumni Association and to add new members to its board. Interested individuals should reach out to Mr. Charlie Alpaugh the president of the association at 973-584-8805.
The Roxbury Alumni Association was established in the early 1900s and formally incorporated in 1968. Every year the Alumni Association provides a scholarship to a graduating senior. The association also purchases a Echo yearbook and donates it to the Roxbury Township Library for its archive.
Membership is only $10 and with your gift, you directly support the ability for the Alumni Association to continue giving a RHS grad a scholarship. You are also supporting the association as it develops new programs and events for you to enjoy.

10th Annual Benefit Beach Blast -
June 16 (rain date

 Come join the Roxbury Arts Alliance, Roxbury Recreation Department and the Roxbury Police Department in celebrating our 10th annual fundraising event. Music, Horseshoe Lake beach, free kids activities, dunk tank, and food for purchase, ending the night with spectacular fireworks!
This is the only event that funds our scholarships to Roxbury graduates. Over $25,000 in scholarships given these past 19 years.
Morris Habitat Will Host 'Hammers For Heroes' Event on June 3
 Morris Habitat For Humanity will host a "Hammers For Heroes" special fundraising event on Saturday, June 3.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn outside the Morris Habitat ReStore, located at 274 S. Salem Street, Randolph. The event is dedicated to veterans and future Morris Habitat homeowners. Everyone is invited to register and participate in this event.
"Hammer for Heroes" offers a unique opportunity for participants of all ages to take pride in new learning skills while having fun, according to Morris Habitat.
Individuals, families, friends, religious groups, and corporate teams will lift their hammers and create walls for a future Morris Habitat affordable home. Besides the build, there will be food, music, crafts, face painting, a bouncy house and much more.

State Honors Roxbury Cops for Helping Social Services
The department was one of four Morris County police organizations among more than 30 statewide that were named in the attorney general's community policing awards ceremony at the Rutgers University Livingston Campus Student Center.
In awarding Roxbury, the Attorney General's Office pointed out how the department "conducts an annual food drive with incentives for children who donate food items," pointing out that kids who donate the items get to meet a Roxbury police officer and get their photos taken with them and displayed on the department's Facebook page as "Hunger Heros."

Volunteers Needed for Annual Roxbury Community Benefit 5K Race
 The Roxbury Project Graduation Committee is looking for Volunteers! High school kids welcomed also for volunteer Hours. Volunteers are get a free shirt.
The Morris County Striders Running Club is hosting their annual Roxbury Community Benefit 5K race (formerly the Merry Heart 5K) on Monday, June 12. Project Graduation receives a donation from the race for providing marshals along the race course. The job of the marshal is to keep the runners on course, to prevent neighborhood traffic during the race and to cheer the runners on!
The race starts at 7:00. Volunteers are asked to be at their location by 6:45. Volunteers will be at their location for 30 minutes to an hour.
Residents Can 'Adopt A Road' in Roxbury Township
Roxbury's Adopt-a-Road and Adopt-a-Spot programs are looking for individuals, school groups, churches, or businesses willing to donate some time to continue to keep the township trash and litter free.

Roxbury Applied Music Program
Mid-Year Registration for Grades 5-12
 Roxbury's Applied Music Program is one of the most celebrated after school programs in the region. Blessed with award-winning music educators offering world-class instruction, the program nurtures local talent, empowering students to pursue careers in entertainment well after graduation.
This is a district-wide program that provides a high-quality enhancement to classroom instruction. Teachers are all specialists on their instrument or vocal specialty. All of our teachers are trained professional musicians and highly qualified in their instrument of expertise. Private study is extremely valuable to the individual student and highly encouraged. Private study is offered as enrichment, NOT remedial instruction. It is encouraged for the complete development of each students' potential as a performing musician and/or artist.
We are beginning mid-year registrations for those students interested in taking private lesson. Once the form and registration fee are received, your child will be assigned a weekly lesson time.

The Roxbury Community School has also partnered with Kaplan SAT/ACT Prep and Lentz & Lentz SAT/ACT Prep to empower students to excel on standardized tests like the SAT's and ACT's.

RHS Financial Literacy this Summer
The New Jersey Department of Education has mandated that all students are required to complete a course (2.5 credits) in Financial Literacy to be eligible for graduation. Due to the number of students requesting to take this course, we have decided to offer the class as an online summer course (we will continue to offer the traditional Financial Literacy course at Roxbury High School as well).
The course will be available to Roxbury High School rising juniors and seniors only during the summer of 2017. The course will begin on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 and run for approximately seven weeks. This interactive course will include writing assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests.
The final exam must be taken in person at Roxbury High School during the week of August 14, 2017. If the student does not fulfill all of the requirements for this class, no credit will be given and the appropriate grade will be listed on the student's transcript.

Latin Dance for Happy People
 If you would like to dance, laugh and even learn some words in Spanish, then do not wait any longer, come to our Latin dance class, salsa, merengue, bachata, and more! Learn the basic steps to dance and have fun at any Latin party without any fear, come to class that will make you move and learn at the same time some important tips of the culture!
