Hello everyone, 
The last 30 or so days have been historic for library workers and the citizens of Saskatchewan. The government's surprise announcement on March 22 to substantially cut funding to seven regional library systems and in Regina and Saskatoon brought forth a groundswell of grassroots activity to have the decision reversed. SLA's message from the outset was that all citizens must have equal access to all library services and resources. We created a Save Public Libraries page.
It housed fact sheets, letters written to stakeholders, statements from other organizations, stories from the media, a letter writing toolkit, and more.
It was gratifying for me to have communicated (email, text, social media, phone, face to face) with many passionate people. I recall one tongue in cheek comment by an individual on social media who thanked the government by giving citizens a unique opportunity to demonstrate the immense value of public libraries.

 The Save Public Libraries committee extends its appreciation to all library workers, volunteers, and others who have supported the call to have library funding restored to the 2016 levels. Your contribution and passion made a difference. If you have any petitions - even with a single name on it - please send to Merrilee Rasmussen, 3301 College Ave Regina S4T 1W3. The team wants to ensure that it has a full count of all signatures. President Michael Shires has sent the
attached letter to the government on behalf of the board of directors.

The Summer Calendar is out with a full program of learning opportunities available from May 1st to August 31st. The online calendar provides links to each webinar as well as a copy of the Summer Program.

Call for Committee Volunteers
SLA is calling for volunteers to fill the committees as described in Section 5 of the Governance Handbook, and to actualize the work to achieve the strategic plan and the ongoing commitments of the organization.
Information on each of the committees can be found here. Most committees need at least 1 or 2 volunteers and the position of The Willow Awards rep is also open.
Current committee members are invited to return to the committee on which they currently serve or to volunteer for a different committee.

The SLA Advocacy Committee has been working on a series of articles to provide members with ideas for ongoing, sustained advocacy or public education. These articles have been published separately but are now collected on the
website
Article #6 in the series will provide some basic information as to how to get your advocacy started, and provide an example of an action planning document that can be used as a template for your own initiatives regardless of the aims or goals.

 Just a reminder that Summer Reading Club images are to be used only for SRC illustrations.- Representatives from the TD Bank Group, Library and Archives Canada and the Toronto Public Library will be at the conference. Please make sure to say hello to them if you are attending.
- We have received a letter from a librarian in Quebec who is interested in a TDSR Club summer exchange with an English library in celebration of Canada 150. I am attaching her letter here with a loose English translation at the bottom.

Registration for Access 2017 in Saskatoon, SK is now open. Join us Sept 27-29th, 2017 for 3 days of in-depth analyses,
 presentations, lightning talks, the hackfest, and plenty of time for networking and social events.
This year registration will be capped at 150. Register early to ensure a spot and to take advantage of early-bird registration prices ($350 + GST until July 1st).
This year, we are offering two all-inclusive diversity scholarships (includes hotel, registration & transportation, up to $2000 CDN).
The Access Conference is committed to fostering diversity in the field of library technology. To encourage diversity, the 2017 Access Conference is proud to have a distinguished diversity scholarship committee coordinating and adjudicating submissions for these awards. Application details are available now, call for proposals closes June 16th, 2017.

The Library and Information Technology Program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is pleased to start offering a limited number of LIT courses online in September 2017 through Continuing Education. The courses that will be offered are:

Professional career and activities:
I completed my MLIS at the University of Alberta, School of Library and Information Studies in 2015, and then went on to work for a year at Edmonton Public Library as a Community Librarian. In that capacity I did a great deal of work with incarcerated populations, planning and facilitating programs and services at the Edmonton Institute for Women, the Edmonton Young Offenders' Centre, and the Edmonton Remand Centre. I also did a great deal of work with Syrian Newcomers and other newcomer groups, planning community building, and language learning events and programs in collaboration with various community partners. After a year of this work, I felt ready to return to Saskatchewan and begin the next chapter of my career in public libraries.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
