New! ISSS SALARY AND STAFF SURVEY RESULTS

We know that this has been a long time coming, but the responses to the survey we put out in 2016 were overwhelming.  We had more than 500 institutional responses, which made compiling data in a way that was easy to present a real challenge.

We had to enlist the help of IT and the Office of Research at University of Alabama (UA). They have finished part 1 of the data visual analytics, which focuses on the salary data reported in the survey.

Instructions to Access the Data
  1. Visit http://oira.ua.edu/NAFSAreport
  2. Once the SAS Visual Analytics Hub login page comes up, sign in with the following.
    1. Username = nafsa
    2. Password = NAFSAsurvey
This should take you directly into the visual analytics.  Be aware that it may be very slow, and the visual analytics only works on a standard PC.  Mobile devices won't work.  Once you access the reports, you can filter by criteria as you wish.

Because this data is normally behind a firewall, UA's IT has only agreed to keep it accessible on a non-firewall site until February 28, 2018.

As for Advisor and Staffing Ratios, that part of the project is still ongoing with UA's Office of Research.  There were so many variables that it proved hard to design the graphical interface for it.  The scholar data was especially difficult due to the survey's failure to record J-1 scholar data properly during the collection.

That being said, here is a rough breakdown of the findings from the most recent survey on the staff-to-student ratio information:

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DATA REPORTED BY ALL RESPONDENTS
  • Overall Intl Student Population: TOTAL: 332,611;  AVG: 1330.4
  • Overall ESL Population: TOTAL: 17,074;  AVG: 84.5
  • Overall UG Intl Population: TOTAL: 234,322;  AVG: 1065.1
  • Overall Grad Intl Population: TOTAL: 149,231;  AVG: 785.4
  • Overall Non-degree/Visiting Student Population: TOTAL: 15,200; AVG: 92.7
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT & ADVISING STAFFING RATIOS (BASED ON FTE)
  • Overall Intl Student Population:   Staff-to-Student Ratio - 241.82:1 ; DSO-to-Student Ratio - 378.18:1; Student Advisor-to-Student Ratio - 590.04:1
  • ESL Population:    Staff-to-Student Ratio - 19.41:1 ; DSO-to-Student Ratio - 32.89:1 ; Student Advisor-to-Student Ratio - 79.08:1
  • UG Intl Population:    Staff-to-Student Ratio - 451.48:1 ; DSO-to-Student Ratio - 547.48:1; Student Advisor-to-Student Ratio - 1108.95:1
  • Grad Intl Population:    Staff-to-Student Ratio - 348.67:1 ; DSO-to-Student Ratio - 264.73:1; Student Advisor-to-Student Ratio - 870.65:1
  • Non-degree/Visiting Student Population:   Staff-to-Student Ratio - 26.96:1 ; DSO-to-Student Ratio - 70.40:1 ;Student Advisor-to-Student Ratio - 84.82:1
There is an historical survey on student-to-advisor and staff ratios, which you can still access on the NAFSA Forums here.

PUERTO RICO
Coordinating Volunteer Relief Trips to Puerto Rico

Dear colleagues,

I am the Director of International Affairs at a US-accredited institution in the San Juan area of Puerto Rico called Universidad del Este (UNE, for short). We are beginning to work with volunteer, Alternative Break, service-learning, and faculty-led groups interested in visiting Puerto Rico in 2018 or 2019 to learn about and support recovery efforts on the island after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

If you, your colleagues, or your students are planning trips of this nature to Puerto Rico, I invite you to contact us to identify universities, community organizations/organizers, local programs, etc., with which you can partner during your trip. We are interested in supporting visiting groups so that their visits can be more productive and connected to local resources as they partner with the Puerto Rican community. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,
