Respected Cardiologist Dr. Emory Burke has been a physician at North York General Hospital since 1972, just four years after it opened.

Having accumulated a wealth of knowledge and rich experience in the treatment and prevention of heart disease, he shares a firsthand overview about the incredible breakthroughs that have taken place throughout his 45-year career.

Is anterior hip surgery right for you? 

Dr. Herman Dhotar performs anterior hip replacement surgery on a specialized piece of equipment called a HANA table.
Anterior hip replacement surgery is a well-established but lesser known surgical approach being used by a small number of specially trained orthopaedic surgeons in Ontario. With  this method, surgeons access the damaged hip socket without cutting muscles or tendons.

Dr. Herman Dhotar, along with his colleagues Dr. Hossein Mehdian and Dr. Shawn Garbedian , perform anterior hip replacement surgery at North York General Hospital.

Reactivation Care Centre: An innovative and collaborative approach to patient care 

The Reactivation Care Centre is designed to care for patients who no longer require an acute care hospital, but who need specialized care to support the transition to home, or other facilities.
In December, North York General Hospital transferred 24 patients to the newly opened Reactivation Care Centre (RCC), located at the former Humber River Hospital Finch site. The RCC is designed to care for patients who no longer require an acute care hospital, but who need specialized care to support the transition to home or another facility. 

"The RCC is one of the ways we are enhancing our bed capacity to provide exceptional patient- and family-centred care," says Susan Woollard, Program Director of Medicine, Critical Care and Elder Care, and the hospital's lead for the RCC initiative.

Shoveling snow: Are you at risk of a heart attack?

When shoveling snow, think about how your body is responding to the constant pushing to clear the snow.
During the winter, the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency sees a spike in patient visits. 

"People tend to forget that shoveling can be a vigorous exercise, especially if you have a heart condition," says Andrea Ennis, Clinical Team Manager in our Emergency Department.

Easing menopause symptoms

Some women may experience perimenopausal symptoms for years leading up to menopause, whereas other women might only have symptoms for a few months or not at all.
Hot flashes, mood changes and night sweats are a few symptoms women may experience when going through menopause.
