Happy Valentine's Day!

It seems like just yesterday in this space I was writing Happy New Year; the 2017-2018 school year has certainly maintained its momentum! This brings up an important point for our Knight families. It will not be long before we will be administering the Florida Standards Assessments. If you feel that your student needs additional support, please take advantage of our after school tutoring and Saturday Learning Lab. We want to see any student needing the extra help receiving it so they can truly show their capabilities once the testing season gets underway this spring.

Tutoring is held after school every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month which means this Wednesday will be another session - sign-up for the Feb. 14th tutoring session here.

On Tuesday of this week we will be holding our monthly SAC & PTSA meetings. As always, these are open to all of our school community members and we encourage your participation.

Thank you for looking over this issue and have a wonderful week.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Lunch
Does your child's lunch account show an overdrawn amount?

Our meal program operates independently of districtwide budgets and rely on sales to cover food and labor costs.  Please clear up accounts to prevent escalating unpaid meal debts. Letters went out Friday to parents that need to pay on a negative balance. Thanks to the parents that brought their account to a positive balance.

Black History Month

During Black History Month, Lake Nona Middle School students will learn about African Americans who have contributed to the fiber of American culture, ranging from useful inventions, innovative music, visual, performing, and literary arts, military service and beyond. Throughout the month of February, to promote and celebrate Black History, students will have the opportunity to participate in Black History Trivia.

Please check out Monday morning's video for our announcements.

Knight Dancer
One 6th grade Knight will compete in the Big Apple next year after his recent performance!

Elijah is one of our 6th grade chorus members and is also quite talented in dance. His parents believe he is so blessed to have strong passionate teachers who support the Arts in our area. They wanted to share a quick picture of Elijah from this past weekend. Elijah and his partner took home a Platinum Award and finished 2nd Place overall for their tap duet. Elijah also received a scholarship to attend and perform at next year's New York City Dance Alliance competition. Elijah's parents are very proud of him and thankful for Lake Nona Middle School's commitment to its students.

Media Minutes

Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair will be at Lake Nona Middle starting Thursday, February 15th. The fair will run through February 23rd. All students will visit through their language arts classes, but also are able to come on their own before school, during lunch, and after school. Morning hours begin at 9:00 am and after school the fair will be open until 5:00 pm. We accept cash and credit cards.

Scholastic has also added an easy new way for parents to fund purchases for their students with their EWallet option. You can visit our fair homepage and preload a specific amount of money onto your student's account so they can buy items at the fair. It's just that easy to set up a digital payment option! Here is the link to our fair homepage:

Knight Athletics
Basketball season update (both teams at 3-1)

Overview

This past week both of our Knight basketball teams faced Meadow Woods and Renaissance Charter! The girls won both of their games and our boys lost against a very tough, undefeated Meadow Woods basketball team. However, they came back and defeated Renaissance Charter Wednesday night. Both teams currently have a winning record of 3-1 and continue to fight for a chance at playoffs.

Girls Team
After suffering a tough loss last week, our girls bounced back with extreme determination. They beat Meadow Woods 44-10, never giving them a chance to come back. 7th grader Anaya Brown contributed 14 points and 6th grader Lexi Blue scored 8 points for the night. Alla Oskardottir (6th grader) knocked down two 3 point-shots for the Lady Knights. She's a shooter!

Boys Team
Our boys suffered a tough loss on Monday against a stacked Meadow Woods basketball team. The Knights kept the game close throughout the first three quarters with a score of 19-20 by the end of the third. Our boys fought hard, unfortunately they were unable to secure a comeback in the fourth. The final score was 36-19 in favor of Meadow Woods. Wednesday night's game against Renaissance Charter, our boys team distributed the ball so well and showed such tremendous teamwork that every player on the roster got a chance to score. Great job Knights! Richard Serrano lead the Knights with 10 points, all of which were scored in the 1st quarter.

This week both teams play away on Monday, February 12th at Walker Middle School. Next home game is Thursday, February 15th at 5:30pm against South Creek Middle School

Monday's Motivational Moment
Monday, February 12, 1809 is Abraham Lincoln's Birthday

ABRAHAM LINCOLN NEVER QUITS

Born into poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown.

He could have quit many times - but he didn't and because he didn't quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the United States history.

Here is a sketch of Lincoln's road to the White House:
1816 His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
1818 His mother died.
1831 Failed in business.
1832 Ran for state legislature - lost.
1832 Also lost his job - wanted to go to law school but couldn't get in.
1833 Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
1834 Ran for state legislature again - won.
1835 Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
1836 Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
1838 Sought to become speaker of the state legislature - defeated.
1840 Sought to become elector - defeated.
1843 Ran for Congress - lost.
1846 Ran for Congress again - this time he won - went to Washington and did a good job.
1848 Ran for re-election to Congress - lost.
1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state - rejected.
1854 Ran for Senate of the United States - lost.
1856 Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party's national convention - got less than 100 votes.
1858 Ran for U.S. Senate again - again he lost.
1860 Elected president of the United States.
