The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Auction
The annual Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Wine Tasting Gala was held on March 17, 2017 at the Wells Fargo Center in downtown Jacksonville.

The Jay Fund is there for parents tackling childhood cancer with financial, emotional & practical support so they can BE THERE for their child.

The Jay Fund provides funding to Art with a Heart In Healthcare for programs and services at Nemours Children's Specialty Care in Jacksonville.  As part of this unique partnership AWAH provides artwork auction items for the fundraising events.

Art with a Heart in Healthcare resident artist Korey Cunningham brought to life the patients dreams using their stories and his.
The pieces were part of a silent auction, and the proceeds will help with the financial, emotional and practical support of families affected by childhood cancer.

Volunteer Artist Spotlight

Helen Meatte heard about Art with a Heart in Healthcare in the late 1990's, but her full time job as an art teacher did not allow her the time to volunteer.  When she retired in June 2016, Art with a Heart in Healthcare was the first place that she applied to to become a volunteer.

What's your favorite part of what you do?  I most enjoy working with the children and their families to help them to escape the stressful experience of a child's hospital stay and to alleviate the boredom.  When I was teaching art full time, I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and would bring in art lessons for the children, their siblings and frequently their parents.  In particular, I could see the shoulders of the parents relax and the lines of worry on their faces disappear for the few hours that they made art. This was extremely rewarding to me.

Helen's favorite medium is oil paint.  She enjoys  "that sense of release from the bonds of my earthly existence and linear time."  The recent death of her husband of over 40 years has left her without the energy to pursue this passion, but she is hopeful that time will heal the wounds.

Helen believes that art opens up a world that allows for expression beyond words.   "I often told my students that art was an international language that required no translation."

Do you have any experiences or memories that have stayed with you?  My mother died when I was a child and my brother and I went to live with my aunt in Manhattan for 6 months.  It was a stressful time, but I kept a sketchbook that allowed me to escape to another place and it became my saving grace.   I am hopeful that by helping these children and their parents make art that they too can find that safe haven if even for a short time.

Thank you, Helen, for being part of our team!

An Other Side Revealed
Save the Date MOCA
opening Sunday, August 6th
We are currently gearing up for our ??th Annual Patient Exhibition at MOCA Jacksonville, sponsored by the First Tennessee Foundation. For this years show An Other Side Revealed  patients were asked.... if you could do anything, be anything, go anywhere, what or where would it be?  So far the response has be wonderful.

Taya Shumate is a 15-year-old artist who loves to dye her hair, take naps, and go horseback riding. Taya found Art with a Heart in Healthcare during a stay at Wolfson Children's Hospital.

Taya and other patient artrists participating  in An Other Side Revealed, sponsored by First Tennessee Foundation, partner with artists-in-residence who bring out their natural talents and expand their art-making skills while promoting self-confidence and self-awareness during their hospital experience.

See Taya's work and others at  the opening of An Other Side Revealed at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville on Sunday, August 6th.

Wolfson Auxillary Luncheon

Art with a Heart team members Lori Presto and Christy Ponder recently attended the Wolfson Children's Hospital Auxillary luncheon. The Auxiliary provides volunteer resources to meet a wide variety of needs at Wolfson Children's Hospital.  Art with a Heart in Healthcare operates in partnership with the Auxiliary at Wolfson's where we are kept up to date on safe practices for working in the healthcare environment. Interns from UNF Partnership
Session Warp up

We would like to thank our recent Interns Ashanti Franklin and  Caitlin Mills for their incredible work with our patients and families.

As part of their curriculum UNF interns concluded their semester by creating  art pieces that reflect their experience working with Art with a Heart in Healthcare.  Along with their UNF Professor Louise Freshman Brown, who is a long-time Art with Heart in Healthcare Honory Trustee, they were join by Artists in Residence Cheryl Splane-Borja, Laura Meier, and Art with a Heart in Healthcare Program Director Lori Presto for their wrap up session.

Ashanti plans to return to Art with a Heart in Healthcare in the fall semester for a second internship and Caitlin, who just graduated, will return as a volunteer.

We look forward having Ashanti and Caitlin return very soon!

Annual Meeting TB & Stations

In March we had our annual training and TB testing.  Jeannie J Poon, Director of Volunteer Services at Wolfson Children's Hospital, had a fun day planned for all attendees which included baby swaddling techniques and the proper way to wear and remove gown and gloves when working with children who are on contact precautions.   It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet other volunteers and be able to share ideas, helpful hints and suggestions.

Spring in the Gallery

Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra hosted a benefit for Art with a Heart in Healthcare during the opening reception of their Spring exhibition featuring artists Laura Lacambra Shubert and Erin Gregory.   The show highlighted the latest series of work by acclaimed artists' Laura Lacambra Shubert and Erin Gregory.
Attendees purchased raffle tickets to win a  Shubert or  Gregory original and also two pieces created by Artist in Residence Korey depicting the patients wishes and dreams.     A total of $2000 from Raffle ticket sales will fund our New Art Program for Wolfson's Pediatric Emergency Room.

The winners from the  Raffle and Auction were  Bonnie Pineau,  Chris Karbowski,  Jill Morgan, and  Katherine McCullen.

Thank you to Stellers Gallery, the participating artists, and those who attended for their support.

Music in the Media Center

With an average of 20% of patients every day in isolation, meaning they are unable to leave there room, the Media Center in the main lobby at Wolfson Children's Hospital became the television studio for a live music session with Art with a Heart in Healthcare Artist in Residence, Ajamu Mutima.  Teaming up with the Wolfson Child Life team, we had the opportunity  to reach patients through the use of this awesome technology.  A few kids who were able came down to the lobby to join in the fun as well as those who were in the waiting area.
The children and parents that joined us had a great time and we look forward to creating more opportunities like this in the future.

Sponsors and Partnerships

Art with a Heart in Healthcare extends our appreciation to the many philanthropic organizations, businesses, and individuals who support our mission. The success of our programs would not be possible without you.
