Remembering Nadia Domenico
Friends of Howland Public Library have been running Beacon Reads at their current location for the past 18 years and are a viable part of the Beacon community. This is due to the remarkable team of volunteers that manage the book store and enjoy meeting and greeting customers.
One of the most dedicated volunteers was Nadia Domenico who was at Beacon Reads most every Monday and Saturday mornings for the past 10 years. Nadia was cheerful and enjoyed her volunteer time.
Sadly Nadia passed away in January 2018 and will be missed by all of us at Beacon Reads and by the many customers who enjoyed visiting with her.

Spanish Story Time
Mondays at 10am

¡Vamos a leer juntos!: cuentos y rondas infantiles. Abierta a niños y niñas menor de 5 años, con un adulto. Reuniremos en el área de los niños para el narración de cuentos y musica hispana.
Children's Story Hour with Lisa Marie. We invite children 0-5, with a caregiver, to a Spanish Story Time! We will meet in the children's area to share in Spanish stories and music.

Daytime Book Club
Tuesday, February 13th, 1:30-3pm
The Helen Savoit Daytime Book Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at 1:30. This month, we are discussing the novel "The Vagabond" by Colette. Read the book and then join us for a lively conversation.

Hamilton, The Musical and the Duel
Thursday, February 15th, 6pm
Learn the history behind the Broadway sensation. Today, Hamilton, is the hottest ticket on Broadway. Hamilton, who as an immigrant became the first Secretary of the Treasury and founded the U.S. financial system died at the hands of Vice President Aaron Burr upon the dueling grounds in Weehawken, NJ. Background history will be followed by listening to songs. This program features the Hamilton mix-tape performance at the White House, an introduction to the principal characters of the musical, and music from the Broadway production including Ten Duel Commandments. Led by Rick Feingold, teacher of American Business History at Bergen Community College.
This program is free and no registration is required.

Coloring for Adults
Tuesday, February 20th, 6-7:30pm
Some say that coloring is a new alternative to meditation. Come to unwind, while expressing your creativity! Adult coloring books offer a variety of designs, often intricate, just waiting to get lost in. Both colored pencils and fine tipped markers will be available, along with a wide variety of coloring books to choose pages from.
No registration needed. Stop by at any point between 6pm and 7:30pm.

Film: The Pursuit of Happyness
Wednesday, February 21st, 12-2pm
Join us on for a special presentation of The Pursuit of Happyness. This film is based on the true story of Chris Gardner, an entrepreneurial salesman who becomes homeless and struggles to take care of his son. Starring Will Smith, Jaden Smith, and Thandie Newton. (PG-13)
This event is free and no registration is required. Light refreshments will be served.

Getting Quality Sleep
Thursday, February 22nd, 6-7:30pm
Join Dr. Arun Agarwal, Medical Director of the St. Luke's Cornwall Center for Sleep Medicine in Fishkill, for this free seminar about the importance of getting quality sleep, and the symptoms and treatment of common sleep disorders, including sleep apnea.

for Middle and High School Students

High School Writing Lab
Thursdays, 2:30-4:00pm
Need help with college essays or other writing assignments? High School students can stop by the Writing Lab after school on Thursdays. Facilitator, Jess Conway, an instructor at Teachers College, will be available to provide support, assistance, and encouragement for students in grades 9-12 at work on school or personal writing projects and college essays.
Writing Lab help is available on a drop-in basis, no registration needed.

Sketchbook Open Studio for Teens
Wednesday, February 28th, 3-5pm
Sketchbook Studio is an open space for middle school and high school students to work on sketchbooks, art journals and other drawing projects. All kinds of art materials will be available to use during studio time. Bring your own sketchbook. All skill levels welcome. Sketchbook Studio meets the last Wednesday of every month.
