Join the Lenten Study Series:
The Cross & The Lynching Tree

This Holy Season the African American churches of the Presbytery of Baltimore invite all congregations to participate in a six-week study of The Cross and The Lynching Tree by Dr. James H. Cone. The book explores two of the most powerful symbols in African American history; and, provides an opportunity to reflect on racism and religion - as well as, how these ideals intersect historically.

"The Lenten study on The Cross and The Lynching Tree is a vital dialogue and healing events," said The Rev. Michael L. Moore, one of five church leaders guiding group lessons in the series. "The task is to wrestle with the crucifixion of Jesus and the historical lynching of black bodies [and explore] what it means to our continued struggle around structural racism, poverty and injustice."

The Lenten study is sponsored by Apostles/Disciples of the In the Loop Ministry Group. Participants can purchase The Cross and The Lynching Tree on-line or at a bookstore; however, the study guide is available free for download.

Approximately 30 people have already signed up for the six-week event which begins with a shared meal at 6pm on Ash Wednesday at Knox Presbyterian Church in east Baltimore City and, cycles through Madison and Trinity Presbyterian Churches before concluding on Mar. 22. Now, for the first time, the group is offering participation through Go-To-Meeting for those who want to listen to the presentations and join the discussions by logging in on their computers, tablets or cell phones. The event can be accessed at 6:30pm on Go-To-Meeting by logging in at https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/364679613
Please log-In at least 10 minutes early to complete a quick  Computer system check  prior to the event. Participants can also access the Lenten study via telephone by dialing:  (646) 749-3122 followed by the  Access Code: 364-679-613

This is the first year that the African American churches have extended an invitation to other congregations to join them on their Lenten journey.  Rev. Moore said he is eager to explore along with people from different backgrounds what the book's study reveals about our faith, humanity and ongoing struggle around structural racism, poverty and injustice. "We must face it. Unless we do, the gospel will be rendered fraudulent and racial divide will never heal. The Cross and The Lynching Tree is probably the most important conversation we could have on the meaning of the cross," he said.

For questions about the study, please email The Rev. Michael L. Moore.
