"Loosening Lutheran Lips" - Sharing Our Stories
During Bishop Taylor's Synod Assembly report, he shared about a project led by Ellen Ray, a member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran in Ramona, who will be compiling tithing stories from those within our synod. Please see below for more information about how you can share your story.

Do you have stories about God's work in your life, specifically related to tithing and finances? Would you be willing to participate in a synod-wide project of sharing tithing testimonies?

The goal is to create a collection of stories of people's positive experiences of tithing and publish them as a devotional/inspirational book. A story of inspiration from you may encourage others to seek God's principles with their finances and resources, too.

An example: You tithe regularly, as part of your response to God's love in your life and your commitment to Him. You're out of work and out of disposable cash. A major appliance breaks down and you don't know how you're going to deal with it. Two days later, you receive the money in some unexpected form that enables you to replace/repair the appliance. God is good!

If you have a story you'd be willing to share, please let us know. Contact Ellen Ray (Spirit of Joy, Ramona) at 858.525.2334 or by email ( [email protected]). Thank you!

From Our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton
Charged times.
In her June column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reflects on serving the neighbor in politically charged times. She reminds us that "active participation in public life and the duty of government to care for its people, especially the most vulnerable, have been part of the Lutheran movement since its beginning."

"God's work. Our hands." Sunday 2017

On Sunday, September 10, congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will again join together for "God's work. Our hands." Sunday. As we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we are reminded of the gospel's promise that we are freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbors.

Once you begin making plans for the day of service, we ask that you register your congregation so we can share and tell stories about the good work that we do together.

Please visit ELCA.org/dayofservice for helpful resources for your planning.

Old Lutheran will once again have T-shirts available for purchase. The bright-yellow shirts provide a wonderful visual impact across the ELCA. The deadline for ordering your congregation's personalized T-shirts with Old Lutheran is August. 15.

Watch how some members shared God's love with their neighbors during the 2016 day of service.

"God's work. Our hands." Sunday celebrates who we are as the ELCA - one church, freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbor. This is work you do in your communities every day, and we look forward to doing this work together again this year.

500th Anniversary of the Reformation

Please plan to join ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton on Tuesday, October 31, as she co-hosts a commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

The event, which will include speakers and a service, will be at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Bishop Eaton will be joined by co-hosts Indiana-Kentucky Synod Bishop Bill Gafkjen, ELCA Vice President Bill Horne and Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod Bishop Dick Graham.

The event is open to the public and will be available online via livestream. All are invited to participate and honor the Reformation anniversary as we bear public witness to Christ, who frees us to love and serve our neighbor, and as we look to the future to which God is calling us.

Please note this date on your calendar. More details will be available in the near future. Follow this link to stay up to date on event changes at the event calendar posts.  For other 500th anniversary events, click here .

Blessings to you as we commemorate this historic occasion in our church.

Multi-Cultural Youth Leadership Event 2018
"For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God." (Ephesians 2:14-19)

In God's eternal plan and wisdom there is a way to remove these barriers. This new humanity would no longer be many, but ONE believer in Christ. In other words, this was God's plan for the unity of many into ONE new people in Christ.

As each individual, congregation, ethnic community and language gathers at MYLE, we will celebrate our uniqueness, dive into Scripture, serve in the Houston community, learn from teachers and elders, spread joy in fellowship and, most importantly, worship the Lord who makes us ONE!

To learn more about previous MYLEs, follow the event on Facebook and check out pictures from past events.

Events & Opportunities

This summer from July 10-13, Lutheran church musicians and pastors from around the United States and Canada (and a few from Europe and New Zealand) will meet in Minneapolis to examine and re-imagine the role of the cantor, the leader of the church's song. These four days will be full: with plenaries led by Mary Louise Bringle, Chad Fothergill, and Dan Schwandt; with workshops that both hone our existing skills and invite us to take up new ones; with "road trips" to St. Olaf College and St. John's Abbey; and with worship that both nourishes our spirits and gives voice to our faith. You do not need to be a member of ALCM to attend. Join us!
