Refreshing-- A really clean story!

TPD alerted Jefferson Park that the property at 1747 Highland was condemned and had become a haven and hangout for some unsavory characters.
TPD supplied bags and a crew to pick up the trash bags we deposited at the curb.
|
Neighborhood volunteers began arriving at 7am. Then at 9 am came the reinforcements!
It was like the posse had arrived! Thank you Jon Heine, Area 2 JPNA representative, and your wonderful group of UA students!

Twenty volunteers showed up Saturday,. Feb 11 to improve the safety of Jefferson Park. Many thanks. I definitely got my 10,000 steps in that Saturday!

From Wilson, to Feldman, to Jefferson, to Speedway

... Barney Oldfield came here in the 30s to race his car down Speedway Blvd.... in a promotional stunt. Oldfield was also famous for always having a cigar stuck between his lips. Oldfield was here in Tucson for an event called the Cactus Derby."

Jim Turner, AZ Historical Society, reports that Barney Oldfield and Harold Steinfeld regularly raced on the road outside of town that became dubbed "Speedway". The race photo above was brought to La Pilita Museum in Barrio Viejo by someone whose father had rescued them from a garbage truck in 1944.
SPEEEDWAY-AZ Daily Star "Street Smarts"
In ... 1896, real estate promoter Lulu May Nelson named this dirt road Wilson Street when she recorded with Pima County a new subdivision called University Extension Addition.
Wilson Street, which ran from the present-day Mountain Avenue to Park Avenue, is believed to have been named in honor of Tucson City Councilman Thomas Wilson.
After the turn of the century, Wilson Street was changed to Feldman Street, in honor of Alther Marcus Feldman, an immigrant from Eastern Europe who had arrived in Tucson in 1878. He was involved in the photography business as well as land development. He would meet an untimely death in a streetcar accident in 1906.
In February 1903, developer Andrew Olsen recorded his subdivision, Olsen's Addition, and listed his part of Feldman Street, from present-day Campbell Avenue to Tucson Boulevard, as Jefferson Street. He also named Olsen Avenue.
According to Vic S. Griffith, a former Tucson City Councilman (1904-1906), who arrived in Tucson in 1898 and was interviewed by Star reporter Thomas Ellinwood in 1948: "A great deal of business in early Tucson was done in bars, and it was in Alex Rossi's Columbia Saloon ...that Speedway was given its name. A group of men were standing around arguing about it, when George Kitt came in. He had been to New York City and immediately suggested "The Speedway" as a title. It stuck ..."
It's likely that Kitt offered up the name of a New York City racetrack because horse racing already existed on this dirt road and to make Tucson sound more like a big city.
In October 1904, Nate Plumer and Fred J. Steward of the real estate firm Plumer & Steward recorded their subdivision, the Plumer & Steward Addition, calling Feldman-Jefferson Street The Speedway. Plumer would later race cars down this dirt road.

The City assessed and scored every street in the City of Tucson and assigned it an Overall Condition Index (OCI) between 0-100, with 0 being failed and 100 excellent. These scores are taken into consideration when determining which City streets should be repaved next.

0-39.99 Failed to Very Poor (RED Every red street I clicked on was a 30)
40-59.99 Poor (YELLOW)
60-69.99 Fair
70-79.99 Good (GREEN)
80-100 Excellent (BLUE)

The more people who voice their concerns to the City, the louder and stronger our voice is. If you would like to request the City include Jefferson Park streets in the next round of resurfacing:
1. You can make the pitch directly to the Bond Oversight Committee during the call to the audience. Their next meeting is Feb 12th @ 5:30 pm in the Parks and Recreation building Mesquite Room (900 S Randolph Way).
2. Send a detailed email describing the need and attaching the above map to the Public Information Officer for TDOT Michael Graham.

Ward VI Councilperson Steve Kozachik made the following suggestion for if you contacted the City about the need for our streets to be resurfaced: " Just a suggestion for when neighbors advocate on behalf of the Jefferson Park streets, demonstrate close engagement with city resources and include in your emails to Michael Graham a summary of the self-help work the neighborhood has already taken part in: The committee will hear from lots of places that the roads need to be repaired. I'm just thinking that if it were I reading the incoming messages, other things being nearly equal, I might be inclined towards a group who's building on a relationship than one that's just pointing out a negative."
Editor note: Park Avenue is Green???? Clearly the city never rode a bike on Park Avenue.

A 2017 neighborhood project. Take a walk to the Lester and Vine northeast corner, look for the purple wall, and pick up a book and/or leave a book.

The UA has started the process of reviewing and revising its Master Plan, of particular importance to those neighborhoods abutting the UA, is the subject to water run-off from the UA, housing of students, and further encroachment into neighborhoods by UA sponsored buildings. i.e. Honors Dorm
